LOW BACK STRENGTH strengthening exercises help restore function and should be considered for a home-therapy program concurrent with supervised physical therapy sessions Exercise How-To # of Sets / Repetitions Frequency Body Position Abdominal Hollowing + Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hands resting just below the hip bone as shown + On exhalation, bring the abdomen toward the low back; the lower back should touch the floor + Hold the position for 5-10 seconds 3 sets of 8-10 holds Supermans + Assume a four point kneeling position as shown with knees under hips and shoulders over wrists + Slowly raise the left arm to shoulder height, at the same time extend the right leg directly behind you to hip height + Hold this position for 10 seconds + Switch sides to complete one set 3 sets of 8-10 holds Bridging + Lie on your back with arms resting by their side and knees bent as shown + Slowly raise your bottom off the floor assuming the bridge position as shown + Hold for 10 seconds + Return to starting position and relax for 5 seconds + as suggested 3 sets of 5-10 holds Planks + Assume the plank position with your weight supported on your toes, elbows and forearms as shown + Keeping your back straight, tighten your abdominal muscles and hold this position for 10-15 seconds + Relax for 15 seconds. as suggested + this exercise in side lying position as shown in second image.
