Coach Carter Unit Review Questions To ge ready for a unit on interpesonal relationships we will be watching Coach Carter and analyzing the coach and team members personality, self-esteem, character and values. Please follow along with the movie and answer the questions below. Answers should be in COMPLETE SENTENCES and indicate your understanding of the concepts covered in class. It might be helpful to have your binder notes ready to review. Also, look over the questions before we watch the film. The first set of questions are based on specific scenes in the movie and go in order. The second set of questions may be answered at any time in the movie as they are general reflective questions. Please answer these questions in your googledocs. First Section 1. In the locker room after the St. Francis game, are the Richmond team members demonstrating responsibility? WHY or WHY NOT? no they are not they are fighting because they are frustrated 2. What is the locker-room conversation doing to the players self-esteem? its making their self esteem worse by dissing each other 3. What do you think motivates Coach Carter to take the low-paying coaching job? he wants to get all the kids living in the ghetto to college 4. What does Coach Carter say is one way to demonstrate respect to an adult? When using these terms, which type of growth is demonstrated (physical, social, emotional, intellectual?) saying sir 5. Cruz thinks that it is funny to stage an attack on several of the basketball players walking home from practice. The basketball players don t think it is funny. Compare the values of the basketball players with those of Cruz. 6. Do you think that the contract is fair? What does your opinion say about your values? i think it is completely fair because school does come first it s your future then sports second

7. How does Coach Carter s son Damien demonstrate perseverance in achieving his goals? he takes charge for his own future and drops out of his school to go play for his dads 8. After the first basketball game, what does Cruz do to try to boost his self-esteem? Does he succeed in raising his self-esteem? he was saying they got lucky and that they sucked out there and they just say it doesn't matter we undefeated 9. Once Cruz asks Coach Carter if he can return to the team, how does he demonstrate self-discipline? he works as hard as he can to get the suicides and push ups done 10. What value does the team show by helping Cruz do push-ups and suicides? working as a team so they can get him back on the team 11. When the team is gathered reading the newspaper, the coach comes in and asks Battle how he sees himself. What is his response? What is Battle s self-concept (think about skills). 12. Rather than storming off the court, what would be a better way for Junior Battle to show his frustration? What type of growth is this (physical, social, emotional, intellectual, moral)? a better way to handle it was to sit back down shut up and talk to the coach after practice 13. Are Kenyone and Kira loyal to each other at the dance? What types of problems does this create in their relationship? they are grinding with other people trying to make each other jealous it destroys their relationship 14. The team worked hard to win the tournament. What helped them win? What do they value? hard work and stamina helped them win 15. When the players do wrong, they are required to do suicides. What stage or level of Kohlberg s Theory of Moral Development does this action indicate? you are only as strong as your weakest link if one person screws up they all pay for it

16. Running suicides helps you to grow. What type of growth do you experience? (physical, emotional, social, intellectual, philosophical, or chronological?) physical and emotional 17. What does Coach Carter value more, winning basketball games or an education? Which do you value more and why? education because thats your future basketball is just a hobby unless you make it pro 18. Because Coach Carter expects that the students do well in school, they start to study and do well. How do other people s expectations of you affect your behaviors? if some expects higher of you you might feel pressured to do better and will do better 19. At the press conference, several of the boys are off to the side talking. Which player demonstrates that they have the values which establish character? (if you can t remember names write down what he says) he wants to go up and tell everyone this is bullshit 20. Think about the scene with Cruz and the killing of his cousin. Why is it important to have goals and the self-discipline to achieve them? if you run wild and run free with no drive or direction it can be dangerous 21. How does the coach demonstrate compassion towards Cruz? he brings him into his house to make sure he is ok 22. Do you agree with the lock-out? Why or why not? i agree that they signed a contract and should follow it 23. How did the boys grow intellectually from the lock-out? What was available to them in their environment to help them grow intellectually? they leaned to make decisions for themselves and did not want to turn out like there parents or in jail or in the ghetto

24. Coach Carter stood up for what he believed in. What does this say about his character? he doesn't care what other people think he stays true to his word and true to himself 25. How does Coach Carter demonstrate Kohlberg s post-conventional level of moral development? 26. How does the basketball team show that they are loyal to Coach Carter after the school board has called off the lock-out?] they bring desks into the gym and do extra work saying they can unlock the gym but they can t make us play 27. How has the attitude in the locker room changed from the beginning of the movie to the end of the movie? it was very negative in the beginning very critical at the end they were more like a team REFLECTION's 28. Describe the self-concept that the basketball players had at the beginning of the movie. How has the way they see themselves changed towards the end of the movie? they seen themselves as lower class and like they couldn't accomplish anything then they seen themselves going to college and now they're confident 29. How does Coach Carter and Cruz personality types affect their ability to get along? because they are so similar wont show their emotions both used to being top dog 30. How do Kenyon and Kira s personality types affect their ability to get along? How could being a talented basketball player be an inherited trait? An environmental trait? (Give an explanation for both) it inspires people thinking they can do something thinking they're just people and anyone can do that
