Switch to future thinking
Increased global competition, rapid advances in technology, risks from natural disasters, resource shortages today s business leaders must adapt to operating in a changing world, managing the risks and opportunities arising from environmental and societal changes. Now more than ever, investors and consumers are placing pressure on organisations to focus on the triple bottom line, and take accountability for the economic, environmental and social aspects of their operations. CEO support for corporate sustainability is unanimous, and goes beyond risk and compliance. Business leaders recognise that sustainability is critical to success, and that new technologies can help meet their sustainability goals. The triple bottom line vision A focus on sustainability reduces business risk, enhances your brand and offers the potential for increased revenues. As a business leader, you re looking for solutions that will help improve efficiency, reduce operational expenditure, provide a better place for your employees to work, and minimise your organisation s impact on the environment. Information and communication technology (ICT) can provide significant sustainability benefits. Yet, helping to drive transformational change and meet corporate sustainability objectives may seem daunting to busy IT departments, who re already under pressure to reduce costs and increase productivity. We believe it s possible to achieve both sets of aims. Dimension Data s sustainable solutions make it easy to take positive action, and help IT departments contribute towards the triple bottom line. A report by the Global e-sustainability Initiative reveals that: While the carbon footprint of ICT equipment is expected to triple between 2002 and 2020, it has the ability to reduce emissions of over seven times its own footprint. ICT-enabled solutions offer the potential to reduce GHG emissions by 16.5%, create 29.5 million jobs and yield USD 1.9 trillion in savings. GeSi SMARTer 2020: The role of ICT in Driving Sustainable Future, 2012 Dimension Data s CEO Brett Dawson talks about harnessing the power of ICT and the passion of Dimension Data s people to minimise environmental impact, reduce costs and make a positive contribution to society. Energy efficiency With a data centre consuming up to 100 times more energy than a similarsized office, IT departments can make significant energy savings in their own operations and provide systems that reduce office energy costs. Our solutions quantify and reduce energy consumption in: data centres by optimising the power usage effectiveness of equipment and facilities networks by reducing energy consumption of communications equipment and leveraging the network s power management capabilities to control IT energy usage smart buildings by using the network as a platform for reducing energy consumption, and increasing operational efficiency in buildings through a fully integrated architecture Our virtualisation and network architectures include the following sustainable solutions to help increase energy efficiency: Smart Buildings The integration of building management systems by using the network as the platform to optimise energy efficiency and deliver greater operational control Virtualisation Assessment Reducing the proliferation of servers needed to drive a modern IT environment is important to simplify management, reduce space, and increase energy efficiency. Our Virtualisation Assessment quantifies the savings in energy, heat and administration that can be made by reducing the number of physical servers required. Power and Cooling Assessment Optimising the efficiency of data centres requires focusing on their computing architecture, and powering and cooling mechanisms. The Power and Cooling Assessment helps to maximise computing per kilowatt and identify, pre-empt and solve power and heat-related problems in the data centre. Data centre design We help you identify the optimum facilities and IT design to maximise power usage effectiveness. With a data centre consuming up to 100 times more energy than a similar-sized office, IT departments can make significant energy savings in their own operations and provide systems that reduce office energy costs.
Waste management Managing e-waste effectively requires a life cycle management approach. Once we ve agreed that your technology has reached the end of its life, we can help you with disposal. We work with manufacturers and approved partners who ve agreed to our four zeros policy for e-waste management: Zero landfill: we aim to eliminate disposing of e-waste in landfill sites. Zero exploitation: disposal must take place in safe, ethical working conditions. Zero data: data is destroyed, so security isn t compromised. Zero cost: minimise or remove costs, which are an inhibitor of good stewardship. Our e-waste solution is ideal for large multinational companies our global footprint gives you access to our direct presence in over 50 countries on five continents. Our Technology Lifecycle Management Assessment for Electronic Waste provides a framework for you to dispose of electronic waste in a way that s: simple cost-effective globally consistent environmentally friendly ethical secure By combining this capability with our Technology Lifecycle Management Assessment, you can gain control of your complete technology life cycle, helping you to maximise your technology assets, and have visibility of future budget and disposal requirements. About Dimension Data s sustainability programme Our sustainability programme has helped us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower costs, and have a different conversation with our clients. By engaging our employees and using our experience in implementing sustainability programmes within our own operations, we re better able to find solutions in our clients environments. Using our own sustainable solutions, we ve been able to achieve the following: Since 2007, we ve reduced the distance travelled per employee by 35% and adopted our own Managed Service for Visual Communications. Our environmental programme has helped reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions by 10% per employee. That s equivalent to taking nearly 2,500 cars off the road for a year and a saving of approximately USD 2.5 million on energy costs. In 2011 a focus on virtualisation avoided the need for over 700 servers, resulting in energy savings of around 1.4GWh. In 2012 we introduced a globally consistent e-waste policy which helped us to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, improved regulatory compliance and increased our operational efficiency. This policy is supported by initiatives such as donating old computers to schools in Africa, and regular e-waste weeks during which employees may dispose of their personal electronics. Independent organisations have recognised the great strides we ve made in executing our sustainability strategy: We ve been commended by CDP for our approach to climate change disclosure for the fifth year in a row. Our 2012 score of 88 is within the range of the top 10% of FTSE 350 companies. We ve developed and rolled out an Environmental Management System based on ISO 14001, with certification in four of our five regions and coverage in 23% of our total office space.
