PATRIAARCH, a ter m meaning father, is a great leader of the Hebrews from early Scripture times. A patriarch is also the male leader of a family or clan. REVELATION is God s act of revealing himself and inviting us to respond with faith. Constitution on Devine Revelation Second Vatican Council 6. Through divine revelation, God chose to show forth and communicate Himself and the eternal decisions of His will regarding the salvation of men. That is to say, He chose to share with them those divine treasures which totally transcend the understanding of the human mind. (6) 12. However, since God speaks in Sacred Scripture through men in human fashion, (6) the interpreter of Sacred Scripture, in order to see clearly what God wanted to communicate to us, should carefully investigate what meaning the sacred writers really intended, and what God wanted to manifest by means of their words. 14. In carefully planning and preparing the salvation of the whole human race the God of infinite love, by a special dispensation, chose for Himself a people to whom He would entrust His promises. First He entered into a covenant with Abraham (see Gen. 15:18) and, through Moses, with the people of Israel (see Ex. 24:8). To this people which He had acquired for Himself, He so manifested Himself through words and deeds as the one true and living God that Israel came to know by experience the ways of God with men. Then too, when God Himself spoke to them through the mouth of the prophets, Israel daily gained a deeper and clearer understanding of His ways and made them more widely known among the nations (see Ps. 21:29; 95:1-3; Is. 2:1-5; Jer. 3:17). The plan of salvation foretold by the sacred authors, recounted and explained by them, is found as the true word of God in the books of the Old Testament: these books, therefore, written under divine inspiration, remain permanently valuable. "For all that was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope" (Rom. 15:4).

GRADE 6 MONDAY CHAPTER TWO Sacrifice and Promise In Abraham s time, people, believed that gods controlled what happened to them. To stay on the god s good side or to ask for something they wanted, they would offer sacrifices such as their best animal, food, or their firstborn son to these god s. But Abraham offered sacrifices to the one true God, not for special favors, but as a way to let God know how important God was to him. He offered a holocaust, or burnt offering, as a loving gift to God. In our relationship with God we have to have faith. Without faith, we could not accept that to have eternal life, we must believe and receive Jesus in his sacrifice of the Eucharist. When Jesus told the crowds that they must eat his body and drink his blood they wondered how were going to do this. Jesus invites us to receive his Body and Blood so we can share in everlasting life. WE BELIEVE The Lord calls us to his table to receive his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. When we receive the Eucharist, we receive new life in Christ, who sacrificed his own life for us. FAITH WORDS SACRIFICE is an act of unselfish giving. It is also a ritual offering made to God by a priest on behalf of the people. ALTAR is a r aised place wher e sacrifices are offered. The altar used for the center of worship during Mass is also a table, where we gather to share the Eucharistic meal. GRADE 6 MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY CHAPTER THREE Covenant and Commitment In Abraham s time, most agreements between people were spoken. There were no legal contracts written, only spoken word was required. Agreements were sealed or made final with symbolic rituals. Today we still use the laying on of hands to bless someone. We also shake hands to make an agreement or promise sealed. Can you think of any gestures you have used to show that your words are truthful? God began the everlasting covenant (sacred agreement) with all living beings when he promised Noah that he would never again destroy the earth by flood. Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob honored the covenant by being faithful to God. Our part in continuing this relationship with God is trying to live like Christ lived. Being honest, loving, and living simply makes us covenant people. GRADE 6 MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY CHAPTER FOUR Piety and Prayer Joseph was one of Jacob s 12 sons and a patriarch, or founding father, of the people of Israel. As a boy, Joseph s brothers were jealous because he was Jacob s favorite. Jacob even made him a special coat of many colors so they sold him into slavery to traveling merchants on their way Egypt. Through a series of miraculous events, Joseph rose from being a servant to being Pharaoh s chief assistant. Throughout all the ups and downs of his life Joseph was directed by his faith in God. Joseph s trust in God was richly rewarded. DREAMS before the time of Jesus were accepted as supernatural messages. Your dream was especially significant if you were royalty. Rulers sought advisors who were able to interpret the dreams. When Joseph was in jail in Egypt, Pharaoh had a dream that non of his interpreters could figure out. The jailer told him Joseph could do it so he called Joseph. Because Joseph was able to interpret the dream he was made the chief assistant of Pharaoh.
