Prologue Dear colleagues Gynaecological malignancies are most often diagnosed among postmenopausal women. During the last decades there has been an increasing incidence of these malignancies to be arising in premenopausal women. On the other hand, the delaying childbearing that is most often observed recently, has led to a significant increase in the number of women diagnosed with a gynaecological malignancy and have not completed their reproductive potential. Fertility preservation for these women without compromising the final oncological outcome is a provocative and most challenging issue. The Gynaecological Oncology Unit of the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Athens is traditionally organizing every year seminars devoted to different topics of Gynaecological Oncology. On February 25-27, 2011 our Unit will organize a Workshop on А Fertility Preservation for Gynaecological Cancer patientsа. The program will be focused on the following topics: - PatientsА» selection and eligibility criteria to enter to a Fertility Preservation Protocol. - Description of all new innovative surgical and medical interventions for the management of the most common gynaecological cancers. - Assisted reproductive technologies that could be applied in these patients. Issues like embryo cryopreservation, oocyte banking, ovarian preservation and transposition, cryopreservation of ovarian tissue and orthotopic autologous ovarian transplantation will be analysed. - The appropriate time, way and facility used for delivery will also be discussed. - The availability and the necessity of developing Fertility Preservation Centres as well as the need for registering all conservatively treated patients to a centralized web based database will also be emphasized. - The goals and activities of the Fertility Preservation Task Force will be outlined. The Workshop will be endorsed by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO). We would like to welcome all of you to attend and actively participate in our Workshop.
