Road Safety Efforts A National Transport Safety Program in place within the Long Term National Transport Strategy (LTNTS). A Traffic Safety Plan (2013-2017) prepared by traffic police, which targets the reduction of road traffic crashes (20%). EuroMed Transport Project: Funded by EU and targets actions related to Safety & Security specifically in Land through implementing a Regional Action Plan (RTAP) 2014-2020. Legislation (Traffic Law, Transport Law, Regulation of Affairs of Transport Accident, Instructions of Investigation of Transport Accident).
Studying the most dangerous intersections and road sections, in cooperation with the Traffic Police and other agencies, and finding safety-enhancing solutions, such as traffic signals, crosswalks, pedestrian bridges and pedestrian tunnels. Applying intelligent traffic control and management systems (ITS) (E-kroka system, violation using Personal Digital Assistant, Speed cameras (fixed and removable),automatic vehicle location, Geographic Information System). Participating in traffic safety awareness campaigns, in cooperation with other agencies and non-governmental organizations, such as the Hikmat Road Safety Organization and the Royal Health Awareness Society (KAFA Program).
Road Safety Challenges Large growth of vehicles ownership 1 vehicle \ 12 persons in 1985 while 1 vehicle\ 5 Persons in 2014. Aggressive driving behavior Lack of safe roads design and routine maintenance Poor protection for pedestrians Children, youths and elderlies are the most affected Public transportation is the less safe transport mode Driving without a driving license still widespread Poor operating conditions in the trucking sector
Needed Actions Activate the Supreme Council for Road Safety (SCRS),which was set up in 2008 under the Ministry of Interior, including all relevant stakeholders. SCRS will take the lead on setting up policies, overseeing all areas of traffic safety in terms of the preparation of plans and programs, the development of specific design standards of roads, and examination of drivers, in addition to traffic awareness. Invite all key stakeholders at least once a year to discuss nationwide road safety problems in view of international best practices and national priorities. Assistance from the UN, Special Envoy, Agencies is requested.
