3. PREPARATION 3.1 Black Jack is supplied ready to use. Stir well before use. DO NOT THIN. 3.2 When using Black Jack, always decant into a separate container and never return surplus material to the original container. 3.3 Surfaces should be clean and free from surface dirt, dust and grease. Light to medium rusted steelwork must be properly prepared by wire brush or power tools to remove loose millscale and flaky rust and paint, which is not sound or tightly adhered. 3.4 Weathered steel should be high pressure water or wet abrasive blasted. 3.5 Best results are achieved if some bright metal (10%) is showing in the rusted area. 3.6 For best results, apply Black Jack when the humidity is greater than 40%. 3.7 On warmer days it is recommended to damp down warm steel with a mist of water prior to application. 4. APPLICATION 4.1 Black Jack should be stored at room temperature (20 o C) for 24 hours before use. Best applied by brush to encourage penetration of rusted surfaces, but Black Jack can also be applied by spray or roller. 4.2 Apply Black Jack when the air and surface temperatures are between 5 o C and 30 o C and the relative humidity between 40-90%. 4.3 Thin, even coats applied by brush is the preferred method of application. Brush Black Jack well into the rust to leave a dry film thickness of 25-30 microns. 4.4 Black Jack in the wet state is off white in colour. The changing colour of the coating indicates that the chemical reaction is taking place. After treatment with Black Jack, the overall area should be black in appearance. If this is not the case, insufficient surface preparation has been carried out. 4.5 Black Jack will normally be touch dry within 2 hours depending on the temperature and humidity. Cooler temperatures delay curing. Allow a minimum of 8 hours before overcoating with water based products and 24 hours with solvent based topcoats. 4.6 Wash brushes and equipment with water immediately after use. Clean spray lines before Black Jack dries. Once dry, Black Jack is difficult to remove. Use an aromatic solvent to soften dry brushes or free clogged lines. 5. HEALTH AND SAFETY This product is considered to be non hazardous. However, please ensure that operators read and understand the health and safety data sheet before using the material. 2

Q. Will Black Jack stop rust? PRODUCT INFORMATION BLACK JACK - Frequently Asked Questions Q. What is Black Jack? A. Black Jack is a safe, water based treatment which neutralises rust and protects rusted iron and steel. Q. How do you use it? A. First, you remove loose flaky rust to expose some underlying bare metal. Second, you apply Black Jack, by spray, stiff brush or roller in thin even coats. A second coat of Black Jack can then be applied or you can apply any other paint topcoat. Q. How many coats do you need? A. Black Jack is a one coat rust treatment. However, the best results are achieved with two coats. In applications not exposed to weathering, two coats give outstanding protection, up to five years, without using topcoating systems. Q. What is the difference in performance between one coat and two coats of Black Jack with an appropriate topcoating? A. Depending upon how severe the conditions are, one coat lasts from 6 months to 2 years. Two coats will last for up to 5 years again depending on the severity of the weather and the impermeable, compatible and flexible nature of the topcoat, epoxy, polyurethane, bituminous coatings etc. Q. Can you apply Black Jack to blast cleaned steel? A. Yes, but there is no need to blast clean if using Black Jack unless to sweep blast. Q. On what surfaces is it used? A. Black Jack is used on iron and steel structures. Q. What happens if Black Jack is used on aluminium? A. Yes, Black Jack prolongs the life of paint systems. Q. Will the product freeze? A. Yes Q. How quickly does Black Jack dry? A. Touch dry in 30 minutes. Q. When can I paint over Black Jack? A. In order for the chemical reaction to take place, 8 hours is recommended for water based topcoats and 24 hours for solvent based topcoats. Q. Can I use Black Jack if it is damp or humid outside? A. Yes. Unlike most paint products, Black Jack can be used in damp humid environments so long as drying conditions exist. Q. What happens if it rains on treated surfaces before Black Jack dries? A. If Black Jack gets wet within 4 hours of application, simply re-apply the coating. Q. Can I use Black Jack in Ultra High Pressure Blasting specifications? A. Yes, it is ideal after UHP water jetting. Q. What is Black Jack made of? A. Black Jack is a water based polymer. The ingredients are unique and can be compared to the quality of polymer that car makers use to provide extended rust proofing and undercoating warranties on vehicles. Q. How does the product work? A. Black Jack contains ingredients which chemically convert rust to a stable iron oxide. The polymer in Black Jack provides a protective coating over the stabilised surface. Q. Does it have any other uses other than rust conversion? A. Black Jack will form a flexible protective coating. A. Yes. It provides a very tough protective coating. 1.

Q. Does it come in colours? A. No. The finished product dries blue/black. Overcoat with the desired colour of paint. Q. Does Black Jack change colour after application? A. Yes. Black Jack is applied as a creamy colour which dries blue/black. The colour change is due to the chemical reaction of rust passivation. Q. Is the product harmful or is it hazardous? A. Not at all. Q. Does the product smell? Q. What will happen if I apply Black Jack on a heat source? A. Heat will soften the coating. It will harden again when cool. Extreme heat will cause the product to char. What happens if I get it on my hands? A. Wash off with soap and water. It is always good practice to wear gloves when painting with any product. Q. What happens if it dries on my skin? A. It may stain but staining can be removed with a dilute bleach solution. Q. What do I do if it gets on my clothes? A. Wash affected area with soap and water before Black Jack dries. Q. What first aid is required? A. Splashes on skin or eyes should be flushed well with water. Q. What about cleaning up after use? A. Use soap and water to clean equipment before Black Jack dries and aromatic solvents if it has dried. 2.
