1. Filtronic Filtronic is an expansive manufacturing company in west Sweden with deep knowledge in cleaning of process air. The company was founded in 1993 with the business concept to develop, manufacture and market mobile filter systems to protect individuals from hazardous gases, fumes and dust and create a better environment. Today we have established distributors in Europe, North America, Australia and Asia. We are specialized in working environmental products in different market segments such as electronics, laboratories, nail industry, radon contamination and laser. 2
2. Health risks Many people who work with acrylics (one type of thermosetting plastic) are not aware of the risks. It is usually not the cured product of thermosetting plastic that is dangerous, but the chemical components that are mixed together to form the plastic. Acrylic is hardened through UV-light, visual light or by adding a hardener. It is also important to remember that the odour free gels are acrylics. Acrylic in general is irritating for eyes, skin and respiratory passages and can give symptoms such as eczema, dry mucous membrane and asthma. Irritation occurs due to exposure to gases, aerosols and dust that appears when filing nails. Health problems that can be caused by longterm exposure are: HEADACHE EYE IRRITATION ALLERGY ECZEMA SORE THROAT ASTHMA RESPIRATORY DAMAGE 3
3. Legislations SWEDISH WORK ENVIRONMENT AUTHORITY Every workplace that are handling thermosetting plastic needs to have fume extractors. Acrylic used in artificial nails is a thermosetting plastic. The filter system should separate the polluted air better than 99 % of gases and particles in the size 0,1-0,3 micrometers. CONTROL OF SUBSTANCES HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH (COSHH) The COSHH regulations require employers to control substances that can harm workers health in United Kingdom. Liquid and powder acrylic systems and UV nails can cause dermatitis. Acrylic fumes can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and irritation. Dust filings from artificial nails can cause asthma. GOVERNMENT OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA Nail technicians may be exposed ed to hazards that place them at risk of injury or harm to their health. Good ventilation i should be provided to control fumes and odours from chemicals used in the nail industry. Dust from filing nails is also hazardous to health. 4
4. Beauty Line The filter system Beauty Line cleans the air from pollution that occurs around nail therapists and manicurists. Beauty Line protects personnel from the pollutants emitted by the acrylics. The small particles that are invisible, but that cause most health hazards are efficiently caught and separated in the particle filter. The gases are effectively eliminated with our unique gas filter that guarantees protection for both nail therapists and customers. 3-stage filter, all in one unit Very low sound level High mobility system with wheels Ready to use, straight from the box Meets legislation demands from work environment authorities Independent performance verification Flexible arm for best capture 5 Made in Sweden
5. Filter technology Pre filter Particle filter Filter class F8 Hepa class H13 1,5 m 2 Filter efficiency: > 99,95 % Gas filter 10,1 l activated carbon = 5,3 kg (11,7 lb) Filter efficiency: > 99,96 % Everything interacts in a filter system. An important part is the ratio between the suction capacity and the dwell time in the gas filter. The air speed through the filter is adapted for optimal contact time and elimination of gases. If the air speed through the gas filter is too fast, the gas molecules will not be eliminated and the gas will pass through the filer and out in the work area again. To verify the function and efficiency, the filter system has been tested by an independent governmental research institute, SP - Technical Research Institute of Sweden. For results see appendix. 6
6. How to use the equipment The nozzle can be placed over or along the workbench. Filtronic recommend that the nozzle comes from the side-ways to get the best capturing area. When filing, place the nozzle as close as possible to the nails to avoid particles to escape into the room. When using liquids, place the nozzle 5 cm from the open cans. 7-8 cm is enough to catch the gases. 7
