Graduate School Rankings Debate: U.S. News and World Report --and beyond Every year, U.S. News and World Report publishes a ranking of different graduate programs and, every year, college and university administrators and faculty decry its flawed methodology and inherent biases. Even so, those institutions which are ranked highly in the publication use this inclusion to advance their admissions goals. In the past several years, alternative graduate program rankings have been derived to counterweight the perceived sway of the U.S. News listings. Quite recently, a Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index was created by Academic Analytics. This index incorporates a number of indicators of a program s scholarly output. Another ranking tool, found at http://www.phds.org, allows the student to create a customized weighting of different aspects of a graduate education. One problem with these two tools is that they are largely restricted to doctoral programs, and may not capture aspects of interest to a prospective Masters student. In some cases, professional organizations, niche publications or scholars within a given field have created rankings for graduate programs in a specific discipline or specialization. The fact is that no ranking of graduate programs can capture all of the variables a given applicant may take into consideration when making his or her choice of programs at which to apply. Most attempts to devise a hierarchy of programs include at least some consideration of faculty research productivity, receipt of grant funding, and rigor of the training received by the enrolled students. Yet there is no agreement on the appropriate weights or priority of these elements and, often, an applicant is justifiably concerned about aspects entirely outside of the rankings considerations: the scale of the individual program, the quality of life, the presence or absence of faculty who share a student s research passion even the geographical location of a graduate program. For this reason, while students should probably have a look at program rankings, their wisest decisions will result from thoroughly researching each program and ideally visiting the different campuses of interest to the prospective applicant. Listed below is a selection of graduate programs that achieved top ranking in the most recent (2007) issue of U.S. News and World Report: America s Best Graduate Schools. Where possible, the listing focus is on disciplinary subfields or concentrations because any one department Psychology, for example or program, such as the MBA, rarely teaches all tracks equally well. For each graduate program, alternative rankings from a source or sources other than U.S. News are presented. Master of Business Administration: Finance Financial Times 1. U. Pennsylvania 1.
