Sleep Disorders
Sleep Disorders According to the National Institutes of Health, at least 70 million Americans of all ages suffer from a sleep problem, with nearly 60 percent having a chronic disorder. There are approximately 100 sleeping and waking disorders that can lead to a lowered quality of life and health. Sleep disorders are diagnosed and treated by many different healthcare professionals, including general practitioners and specialists in neurology; pulmonary medicine; ear, nose and throat; psychiatry; psychology and other fields. We offer state-of-the art sleep testing for all types of sleep disorders in adults and children ages six and older. The prevalence of sleep disorders appears to increase with advancing age. More than 50 percent of Americans aged 65 and older have trouble sleeping. Sleep is important for renewing physical and mental health each day. Lifestyle and dietary habits may contribute to sleeplessness, but it is important to consult with a physician to rule out any medical causes. Sleep research and clinical studies have evolved into a specialized science of diagnosis and treatment laboratories known as sleep disorders centers and Martin Health System is pleased to offer this service to the Treasure Coast community.
The Sleep Study All studies are performed in sleep bays, or pleasant bedroom-like settings designed to help the patient relax and feel comfortable. The sleep bays are private rooms with Select Comfort Sleep Number full-size beds, a bathroom with shower, WiFi and flat screen TVs with cable access. Rooms are also equipped with an intercom system for patient/technologist communication. Sleep studies can be performed during the nighttime or daytime depending on the patient s sleep schedule. Patients usually require one night of sleep study for diagnosis. A second night may be necessary for treatment. A technologist will be monitoring you throughout the night. The sleep study measures: EEG (brain wave patterns) Eye movement Muscle tension Breathing effort and airflow Heart rate Body movement Oxygen content in the blood
Test Results Test results are sent to the referring physician, usually within a week. Upon review by the referring physician, results and a recommended treatment plan will be provided. Insurance Coverage Sleep disorders center services are covered under outpatient diagnostic testing allowances by Medicare and most insurance policies. The center will assist the physician office or patient to determine what services are covered.
