NADIR Membranes and Formats For more than 40 years MICRODYN-NADIR has been manufacturing membranes in Europe's largest membrane production facilities for industrial applications. NADIR membranes are permanently hydrophilic and chemically resistant. Micro-, ultra- and nanofiltation membranes are produced with high quality and consistency in a specially developed, patented process. The results speak for themselves: The unequalled hydrophilic properties of NADIR membranes increase performance (higher flux), longevity and significantly reduce fouling. NADIR membranes are available with cut-offs covering the full spectrum of micro-, ultra- and nanofiltration applications. NADIR membranes are available in a range of polymeric materials:» polyethersulfone (PES)» permanently hydrophilic polyethersulfone (PESH) and polysulfone (PSH)» extremely hydrophilic, highly solvent resistant cellulose (RC)» polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) These materials can be used over a wide range of applications. SPIRA-CEL Spiral Wound Modules Spiral wound modules have a great variety of potential combinations and consequently this module type is the most widely installed in filtration plants. They are used in applications ranging from the beverage, food and the pharmaceutical industry to environmental and biotechnological processes. The modules are used to separate particles like colloids, proteins and micro-organisms and to decontaminate fluids. SPIRA-CEL spiral wound modules are available in all the various types of NADIR membranes. They have a compact design and offer an optimum surface area to volume ratio. The feed channel height can be varied by the thickness of the spacer material (from 30 to 80 mil). This helps to adapt the height to the viscosity or the solids content of the liquid. This design feature leads to excellent hydrodynamics in combination with a low energy demand. SPIRA-CEL spiral wound modules have an outstandingly high stability against temperature and ph. They can be used to clean both caustics and acids, and also in biotechnological applications where extreme cleaning conditions are required. MICRODYN-NADIR has extended its SPIRA-CEL product range to include an additional module type. In addition to the commercialized SPIRA-CEL -OX type modules (ph range of 3-14, and operational temperature of 80 C) SPIRA-CEL -OY type modules are now available with a ph range of 0-12 and operational temperature of 80 C. These module types are offered with polyethersulfone membranes in micro-, ultra and nanofiltration ranges. MICRODYN-NADIR s SPIRA-CEL modules are readily available in different constructions depending on the area of application: process industry, biotechnological processes and food industry. advantages» high packing density» high thermal and chemical resistance» high quality standard» economic and simple module replacement» various choices of module dimensions Total Membrane Area SPIRA-CEL Size of SPIRA-CEL Spiral Wound Modules in m 2 Feed-Spacer 2440 3838 4040 4333 6338 8040 31 mil 7.0 7.5 7.6 20.5 32.0 44 mil 1) 1.8 5.7 6.0 6.3 17.1 25.0 80 mil 4.0 4.2 4.3 11.5 16.5 Notes: (1) For most applications the 44 ml feed spacer is appropriate. 12 w w w. m i c r o d y n - n a d i r. c o m

BIO-CEL Submerged Modules Membrane bioreactors are the next generation of activated sludge waste water treatment processes. The BIO-CEL module replaces the conventional clarifier for the treated water from the biomass. The BIO-CEL Membrane Module is the efficient, reliable and future oriented solution, which significantly increases the purification rate, creates a discharge absolutely free of solids and thanks to an ultrafiltration membrane, the best discharge values. BIO-CEL combines the advantages of classical plate and frame and hollow fiber modules without the disadvantages. It has the packing density of a hollow fiber module, is back flushable like a hollow fiber module and has the defined channels of a plate and frame module. This new development consists of a backflushable membrane pocket, where the backflushability is reached by a laminated construction of the membrane support material to the spacer material, creating a self supporting membrane sandwich only 2 mm thick. An extremely high packing density is achieved with very low weight, as is normally possible only when using hollow fibers. The optimized membrane sandwich allows for a constant permeate flow and a highly effective back flush over the entire membrane surface. By using a flat sheet membrane, braiding is avoided and also due to the open channel construction, sludge deposition and sticking of fibres has been reduced to a minimum. SEPRODYN Modules for Fine Filtration SEPRODYN tubular modules use a newly developed processing technique that allows membranes to be used in applications which require highly stable polymer materials, such as the filtration of acid pickling baths. These membrane modules can be used across the entire ph-range from 0 to14. These modules are also recommended in applications that require a high resistance against oxidative substances. SEPRODYN membranes are self-supporting and extremely robust tubular membranes. Because of their large inner diameter of 5.5 mm, liquids with a high percentage of suspended solids can be filtered, and since there is a high packing density, the flow rates are very high per filter module. SEPRODYN modules are made from ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene tubular membranes. The entire wall thickness of the structure is equal in composition, creating a symmetric porous membrane structure. As a result, the separation efficiency of the membrane is not compromised if abrasive substances damage the membrane surface. MICRODYN-NADIR GmbH uses a patented process that tightly welds the individual tubular membranes into the housing, creating a very highly stable seal between the membranes and the housing. SEPRODYN filters are cross-flow microfiltration modules used to separate suspended solids greater than 1.0 micron. The highly porous membrane contributes to a very high product flux and, with the ability to employ periodic back-flush, stable and efficient processes are achievable. Advantages SEPRODYN Membrane characteristics» extremely resistant to chemicals and abrasion» high packing density per module» filtration can be performed in both directions» high solids tolerance Membrane characteristics Membrane geometry Inner diameter Membrane material Tubular 5.5 mm Polyethylene» backflushing with chemical solutions Pore size 1 µm» minimized dead zones 16 w w w. m i c r o d y n - n a d i r. c o m

MICRODYN Tubular and Capillary Modules The highly porous symmetrical structure of the MICRODYN membrane leads to extremely high permeability rates. The pore size distribution is very narrow making for sharp separations. The MICRODYN membrane is very resistant to abrasion and other mechanical damage due to its homogeneous construction, unlike asymmetrically structured ceramic membranes. It also has great chemical resistance because of the material properties of polypropylene. The membranes are available as hollow fibers, capillaries and tubes. Capillary and hollow fiber membranes are potted in the module housing. The centrifugal casting of the potting material guarantees high product quality. Tubular membranes are welded together integrally with the housing at the filter module ends. This makes gaskets or other sealing materials unnecessary. The modules are therefore extremely chemically stable and robust. MICRODYN filter modules have been developed for crossflow microfiltration. This type of crossflow microfiltration represents a modern filtration method for the separation of suspended particles or emulsified liquids. Advantages» well defined flow conditions» high packing density per module» minimized dead zones» extremely resistant to abrasion» backflushing with chemical solutions» reduced specific energy consumption 18 w w w. m i c r o d y n - n a d i r. c o m Any surface deposits formed during filtration can be easily minimized by:» Adjusting the velocity of the feed flow» Periodic back-washing (PRS)» Chemical cleaning in the opposite direction to the filtration flow These techniques result in consistently high performance levels and many years of trouble-free operation. Polypropylene is resistant to many organic and inorganic chemicals including most acids and caustics with the exception of oxidants. The MICRODYN microfiltration modules can be used for the filtration of most liquids and mixtures of these chemicals.

DIADYN Modules for Dialysis Selective substance exchange systems are becoming more and more important in the areas of pharmaceutical, biological and food and beverage technology. Dialysis is an important contribution to the selective substance exchange process due to its gentle separation characteristics. The use of the dialysis module is best described by means of one of its applications: the production of an alcohol-free beer by removing alcohol from a conventionally brewed beer. For the subsequent removal of alcohol, the conventionally brewed beer flows through a semi-permeable hollow fiber membrane. The reverse flow on the other side consists of dealcoholized dialysate with all the ingredients specific to the beer. The diffusion gradients of the different fluid concentrations (in this case alcohol concentrations) cause the separation of the alcohol from the beer. In this example the driving force in the interchange process is exclusively the difference in alcohol concentration between the two fluids. The selectivity derives from the size of the pores of the membrane, the molecular size of the substances to be extracted and their diffusion speed. Specifically designed for use in pharmaceutical and biological technologies, the DIADYN dialysis modules are autoclavable at 121 C, allowing this gentle dialysis technique to be used even in this highly sensitive process. Advantages» no change in CO 2 content» reliable and economical process» separation at storage temperatures» no additional energy supply required» no taste alteration» quality features remain unchanged 20 w w w. m i c r o d y n - n a d i r. c o m
