F u j i t s u C o m p u t e r S y s t e m s Battery Charger User s Guide This user s guide contains information on your battery charger. We strongly recommend that you read this guide before using the battery charger even if you are already familiar with computers. BATTERY CHARGER COMPONENTS Battery Battery Connector 1 Connector 2 Power Indicator LED AC Adapter Connector Charge Indicator LEDs Figure 1. Battery Charger Components Power Indicator LED The Power Indicator LED is on when power is being supplied from an AC adapter. 1

Depending upon the configuration of your battery charger, it may or may not come with an AC Adapter. If it comes with an AC Adapter, be sure to use only that adapter with the battery charger. If it does not come with an AC Adapter, use only the system AC adapter (UL Listed, Class 2 AC adapter with output rating of 16V dc, minimum 2.5A). This charger is designed only for charging Fujitsu Lithium ion battery packs that have the proper mating connector. If you have questions, check your system User s Guide or our accessories Web site to ensure that you are using the correct charger. Charge Indicator LEDs The Charge Indicators show the condition of the battery being charged. Table 1 on page 3 shows the LED color and its relation to the charging status. Battery Connector 1 Battery connector 1 is used to connect a battery to the charger. Battery Connector 2 Battery connector 2 is used to connect a battery to the charger. AC Adapter Connector The AC Adapter Connector is used to connect power to the battery charger via the AC adapter. 2

BATTERY CHARGER OPERATION The Power Indicator LED is on when the battery charger is connected to a plugged-in AC adapter. The two Charge Indicator LEDs show the charging status of the battery connected to the charger or the condition of the charger itself, as shown in Table 1. Charge Indicator Flashes orange Steady orange Steady green Steady red Flashing red No light Charging Condition Standing by for charging Charging Charging is complete Battery failure Charger failure Battery not connected Table 1. Indicator Status If the charger detects that something is wrong with the battery, the Charging Indicator LED will turn a steady red. If this happens, immediately remove the battery from the charger. If the battery charger detects a failure in its charging circuit, the Charging Indicator LED will blink red. If this happens, immediately disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery from the charger. 3

The following items can affect the battery charger s performance: After a battery has been charging for a period (as noted below), the battery charger will stop charging (regardless of the charge level) and the Charge Indicator LED will turn green. This is a safety feature to prevent damage to the battery. Battery Capacity Charging Time Less than 2500 mah 5 hours 2500 mah to 4100 mah 8 hours Over 4100 mah 12 hours When a battery has been left unused for a long time, it will take longer to charge. When the ambient temperature is low, it will take longer to charge a battery. If the temperature of a battery connected to the charger is extremely high or low, the battery charger will standby for charging until the battery returns to normal temperature. This is a safety feature designed to prevent damage to the battery. USING THE BATTERY CHARGER To charge a battery, follow these steps: 1. Before connecting, see the Information box on page 2 regarding AC adapter useage. 2. Connect the battery charger to the AC adapter. 3. Plug the AC adapter into an AC outlet. (Figure 2). 4. The Power Indicator LED will light up and the Charging Indicator LED(s) will flash orange once. 5. When the Charging Indicator LED(s) turns off, align the plastic key pin of the battery connector with the corresponding guide in the battery socket. Be very careful to align the battery and charger properly. (Figure 3) 4

The charger can have two batteries connected at the same time, but it charges only one at a time. The battery that was connected first is charged first. The second battery is held in a wait status until the first battery is completely charged. Charging time varies depending on the environmental conditions (such as temperature) or deterioration of the battery(s). 6. The Charging Indicator LED(s) will turn orange when the battery(s) is being charged. 7. The Charging Indicator LED(s) will turn green when charging is completed. Figure 2. Connecting the AC Adapter 5

Note that the battery shown is for illustration only; your battery may appear different. Figure 3. Connecting the battery CARE AND MAINTENANCE Never connect the battery charger to a physically defective battery or use a defective charger. When the battery charger is not being used for charging, be sure to disconnect the AC adapter and remove any battery connected to the charger to avoid the chance of fire or equipment failure. When disconnecting the AC adapter, do not pull on the cable to remove the adapter. Always remove by grasping the plug body. If the battery charger smokes, smells strange, heats abnormally, or makes noise, immediately disconnect the AC adapter, and contact your Fujitsu reseller (see Fujitsu Computer Systems Contact Information below). It is normal for the charger to become slightly warm during charging. Do not use the battery charger in humid, dusty, or poorly ventilated places. Do not use the battery charger if any foreign substance, such as water, dirt, etc. has gotten inside. 6
