Fresh water convolvulus (Ipomoea reptans and Ipomoea aquatica) - Specification 1 Scope This Malaysian Standard specifies the requirements for fresh water convolvulus (Ipomoea reptans and Ipomoea aquatica, of the family Convolvulaceae) to be supplied fresh to the consumer, excluding industrial use. 2 Normative references The following normative references are indispensable for the application of this standard. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative reference (including any amendments) applies. MS 1187, Method of sampling for fresh vegetables MS 1784, Crop commodities - Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) MS 1784-7, Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) - Part 7: Fruits and vegetables Malaysian Food Act 1983 (Act 281) and Food Regulations 1985 Food Hygiene Regulations 2009 Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority Act 1965 (Act 141) and Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Grading, Packaging and Labelling of Agricultural Produce) Regulations 2008 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 clean Practically free from dirt including soil, mud, stain and other foreign matters. 3.2 commercial maturity The stem and leaves are tender and not fibrous. 3.3 damage Any injury caused by physiological and mechanical means, pest and diseases, which affects the quality and overall appearance (refer example in Annex A). 3.3.1 mechanical damage Injury includes bruise, cut and breakage during handling. 3.3.2 physiological damage Defect includes discolouration and chilling injury. 3.3.3 pest and disease damage Injury caused by insects, animals and microbes. 3.4 defect Not well shaped according to varietal characteristics and/or overall appearance affected by marks such as spot and rust which cannot be cleaned. 3.5 fresh The stem and leaves are green, firm and not wilted. 3.6 similar varietal characteristics Each consignment consists of similar colour and appearance. 3.7 uniform size The lengths of the water convolvulus are about the same, measured from the base of the stem to the tip of the shoot. 3.8 well trimmed The discoloured, dried or otherwise damaged leaves which materially affects the appearance of the water convolvulus have been removed. 4 General requirements 4.1 The water convolvulus shall be fresh, clean, well-trimmed, practically free from damage and/or defect, uniform varietal characteristic and attained commercial maturity. 4.2 Requirement for pesticide residue, heavy metals and microbial shall comply with the Food Act 1983 (Act 281) and the Food Regulations 1985. 4.3 Production of water convolvulus shall comply with the Good Agriculture Practice (GAP) as prescribed under MS 1784 and MS 1784-7 or equivalent. 4.4 Handling of the water convolvulus shall in accordance with the requirements of Food Act 1983 and the Food Regulations 1985 and other relevant public health legislation currently enforced in the country. 4.5 Shall comply with the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority Act 1965 (Act 141) and Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Grading, Packaging and Labelling of Agricultural Produce) Regulations 2008. 2 STANDARDS MALAYSIA 2015 - All rights reserved
5 Grading 5.1 Grade classification Water convolvulus shall be graded as described in Table 1. 5.2 Size classification There is no sizing requirement for water convolvulus. Table 1. Grade classification Grade Requirements Tolerances (maximum) Premium Water convolvulus in this grade shall be from the same variety, fresh, clean and without root. They shall be uniform in size and free from any defect and damage. Water convolvulus of this grade meeting those of Grade 1. Fresh 5 % Defect 5 % Damage 5 % Uniform size 5 % Maximum 5 % by number or weight shall be allowed in each package of produce. 1 Water convolvulus in this grade shall be from the same variety, fresh, clean and with/without root. They shall be uniform in size and practically free from any defect and damage. Water convolvulus of this grade meeting the General requirement (Clause 4). Fresh 10 % Defect 10 % Damage 10 % Uniform size 15 % Maximum 15 % by number or weight shall be allowed in each package of produce. 6 Sampling The method of sampling to test the conformity of produce to this standard shall be in accordance to acceptable sampling methods including MS 1187. 7 Packaging 7.1 Water convolvulus of the same grade shall be packed in clean and suitable protective packages with proper ventilation and to provide protection from hazards during postharvest handling and transportation. 7.2 The materials used inside the package shall be new, clean, non-toxic, intended for food and of a quality so as to avoid causing any damage during postharvest handling and transportation of the produce. The use of materials, particularly of paper or stamps bearing trade specifications is allowed, provided the printing or labelling has been done with non-toxic ink or glue. 7.3 Maximum allowable net weight per container shall not exceed 30 kg. 7.4 Each package shall contain produce of the same origin. 8 Labelling 8.1 The containers shall be labelled with the following particulars: a) date of harvest; b) date of packing; c) name, address and code of exporters or importers; d) name, address, code of growers or company registration number; e) name of produce; f) country of origin; g) grade and size; and h) net weight. 9 Compliance with standard Each produce which is inspected by a competent authority and found conforming to the requirements of this Malaysian Standard at the time of inspection, shall be deemed to comply with this standard. 10 Certification mark Each container, may by arrangement with a recognised certification body, be marked with the certification mark of that body, provided the product conforms to the requirements of this Malaysian Standard. 4 STANDARDS MALAYSIA 2015 - All rights reserved
