OIE Standard Setting Work in Animal Production Food Safety An OIE priority since 2001 3 rd OIE Strategic Plan (2001-2005) recommended that: OIE should be more active in the area of public health and consumer protection and this should include zoonoses and diseases transmissible to humans via food, whether or not animals are affected by such diseases. APFS Working Group (2002) to coordinate the food safety activities of the OIE
OIE Working Group on Animal Production Food Safety Dr Stuart Slorach (Sweden) (Chairperson) Dr Katinka de Balogh (FAO) Dr Kazuaki Miyagishima (WHO) Secretary (Codex Alimentarius Commission) Dr Carlos A. Correa Messuti (Uruguay) Dr Martine Dubuc (Canada) Prof. Steve Hathaway (New Zealand) Dre Jessey Alice Kamwi (Namibia) Dr Alexander Panin (Russia) Dr Koen Van Dyck (European Commission)
OIE work in Animal Production Food Safety Outputs: the development of recommendations at the farm level for the management of diseases transmissible to humans through food of animal origin, whether or not animals are affected by such diseases, e.g. tuberculosis, brucellosis, zoonotic parasites, Salmonella in poultry.

Infection with Echinococcus granulosus - adopted in 2013 Ch 8.5. Infection with E. multilocularis - adopted in 2013 Ch 8.14. Infection with Trichinella spp. - adopted in 2013 - developed in close collaboration with Codex
Adopted at 2014 General Session Brucellosis chapters revised Chapter 8.X. Infection with Brucella abortus, B. melitensis and B. suis adopted at the 82nd General Session in May 2014 will replace Chapters 11.3. (bovine), 14.1. (caprine and ovine) and 15.3. (porcine).

How does OIE decide what pathogens to develop standards for? OIE listed diseases i.e. that meet the criteria for inclusion on the OIE list (Chapter 1.2) e.g. Brucellosis, E.granulsosus, Trichinella, Porcine cysticercosis OR Pathogens important to Codex that can be controlled at the farm level e.g. Salmonella spp. in poultry, Salmonella in pigs and cattle
What you can do to participate in these standard developments? Review Reports of the Terrestrial Code Commission for any work relevant for APFS, e.g. draft chapter on T.solium and future work on Salmonella in pigs and cattle. NOTE: FPs should also communicate with Codex Contact Points in food safety in your country to coordinate standard setting activities of OIE and Codex at the national level, e.g. Salmonella work.
