Overview Gateway Server Manager lets you locally and remotely monitor the health and utilization of your servers. From the Console, you can monitor any server that has the Agent installed. You can monitor critical indicators such as: Processor utilization Memory usage Events Sensors On platforms that support Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 1.5, you can monitor servers even when the operating system is inactive (out-of-band). You can also remotely shut down your server, reset runtime monitors (watch dog timers), and perform power operations. Important For IPMI 1.5 out-of-band to work (only available on the Gateway 955 and 975 servers), you need to initialize the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) with the System Setup Utility provided on the Gateway Server Companion CD. 1

Console Station Agents 2

Components Gateway Server Manager consists of three components: Agent The Agent runs on the managed servers. Gateway Server Manager extends the standard Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) software with four WMI providers: the System Management BIOS (SMBIOS) provider, the IPMI provider, the operating system provider, and the Event provider. Station The Station runs on the management server and extends the standard WMI software. The Station evaluates requests for information from the Console, identifies which WMI provider has the information, retrieves the system information, and performs data processing and analysis. It then returns the data to the Console. Important Only one instance of the Station can be running on your network. 3

Features Console The Console runs on any Windows computer (including the server) from which you want to perform server management functions. The Console offers a standard Microsoft Management Console (MMC) interface to let you access the Agent on a remote server. Alerts Events and actions that occur on managed servers are forwarded by the Station to the Console. You can assign pre-defined actions to alerts. Actions include: Opening a window on the Console Sending e-mail messages to a list of recipients Running a non-gui program on the Station (such as a batch or a script) Discovery You can specify an IP range, and Gateway Server Manager s discovery tool will search for and display available in-band (operating system present) and out-of-band (pre-boot or operating system-absent) computers in that range. 4

Remote management You can terminate processes that are running on managed servers. You can shut down, turn off, reset, and turn on managed servers (turn off and turn on functions available only on IPMI-capable servers). You can also retrieve and reset watch dog timer values. Unified user interface The Console provides a dynamic display of related menu items and console tree branches that let you easily switch views between managed servers. System information retrieval Gateway Server Manager lets you view the following hardware, operating system, and events information about the managed server: Operating system: System information Disk information Process and performance Events: BIOS and IPMI SEL (System Event Log) Application Security System 5

Hardware: Watch dog timer (available only on IPMI-capable servers) System and memory information Baseboard BIOS information Processor and CPU cache information Port connector information PCI slot and on-board device information IPMI device information (available only on IPMI-capable servers) Environmental and other monitoring sensors DIMM type(s) 6

Installing Gateway Server Manager Each component can only be installed on systems running a Windows operating system. You can install the Agent, the Station, and the Console on the same server. Important Do not install more than one instance of the Station on your network. The Agent, the Station, and the Console all use the same installation program, so you can install all three at the same time. System requirements Agent minimum system requirements Gateway 920, 955, 960, 975, or 980 server Operating system: Windows NT 4.0 (with Service Pack 6 and WMI core files), Windows 2000 Server, or Windows Server 2003 Processor: Intel Pentium III 500 MHz or faster Memory: 128 MB Network card: Ethernet Hard drive: At least 100 MB available space 7
