Ballistic steels SECURE / SECURE M Plates for highest protection ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe Thinking the future of steel

SECURE ballistic steels excellent protective properties, high toughness and hardness ThyssenKrupp high protect ThyssenKrupp high protect SECURE SECURE M Protection for a diversity of applications Steel is a key material when it comes to protecting vehicles and buildings against the threat posed by firearms and explosives. The most important criterion in these applications is a high degree of security for occupants through ballistic protection. It is with this mind that ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe provides steels in the SECURE and SECURE M series, with excellent protective properties in combination with high toughness and hardness up to 600 HBW. SECURE steels have excellent cold forming properties despite their high degree of hardness, and guarantee good weldability with ferritic and austenitic consumables. Their characteristic alloying elements carbon, chromium, molybdenum and nickel, together with appropriate heat treatment by water or oil quenching and tempering, give the SECURE steels their high hardness and excellent ballistic protection properties. Weight-optimized design Tight thickness tolerances make it possible to design the ballistic protection on a weight-optimized basis and are therefore particularly interesting for designers where manufacturing and weight-related aspects are concerned. ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe produces heavy plate with particularly tight thickness tolerances with a maximum of 0.4 millimeters by using a state-of-the-art hot strip mill. This is approximately equivalent to halving the tolerances of a steel plate produced via the four-high mill. Innovative composites Combined protection concepts enable extensive protection properties and added savings in weight. Combining SECURE steels with fiber composite materials developed in cooperation with partners and customers synergizes the properties of different materials. Automobile designers can benefit in future from enhanced product characteristics. Highest quality standards The use of SECURE steels in safety-relevant spheres of application calls for extensive testing and individual final acceptance procedures. An in-house test facility and close cooperation with accredited ballistic test centers provide a sound basis for regular checks on and verification of ballistic properties and for the further development of these steel grades. Manufacture of SECURE ballistic steels from four-high or hot-rolled production Quality control on the SECURE ballistic steels

Advantages of SECURE ballistic steels at a glance Advantages of ballistic steels SECURE / SECURE M SECURE M 300/350 Specially developed to meet the requirements of MIL-DTL-12560. SECURE 400/500 / SECURE M 400/500 Standard grades for ballistic protection against hard-core ammunition. Steels offering an optimum combination of high hardness, cold formability and weldability. SECURE 450 / SECURE M 450 Besides high hardness, this grade offers excellent toughness properties and cold formability. Therefore particularly suited to providing protection against explosive charges (blast) or where high constructional demands are involved. SECURE ballistic steels are used for armored civilian vehicles. SECURE 600 / SECURE M 600 Ballistic steel with extremely high hardness to meet highest security requirements. The ballistic resistance test conditions can also be based on the STANAG 4569, DIN EN 1522, DIN EN 1063 and PM 2000 standards. The scope of testing performed on the SECURE M steels is based on international specifications. It includes ultrasonic testing in accordance with DIN EN 10160, Quality Class S1 and ballistic testing. All test results are documented in DIN EN 10204-3.1/3.2 inspection certificates. Conditions of delivery according to customer requirements can likewise be agreed upon and arranged. Manual precision work: hardness, flatness and thickness testing of SECURE ballistic steel plates Plates from stock The following grades are available from stock in standard sizes: SECURE 450, SECURE 500 and SECURE 600. SECURE M heavy plates are also available at short notice from a purpose-built warehouse, including TL inspection. Sample material is likewise available, e.g. for ballistic trials. The SECURE steels are firmly established in a broad spectrum of ballistic protection applications. Typical applications in the security field include the following: Passenger cars Government limousines Off-road vehicles Trucks/light commercial vehicles Security vans Police vehicles Facades Security fences Firing ranges Bank counters Security doors and partition walls Military vehicles and equipment Stock for standard plate sizes

SECURE ballistic steels optimal protection against ballistic attack and explosive SECURE ballistic steels make for optimal ballistic protection and a high level of safety for the occupants of civilian vehicles. SECURE steels with hardness grades 400, 450, 500 and 600 HBW are the ideal solution where ballistic protection in civilian applications is required. Optimal matching of the material to the specific requirements of each such application enables weightoptimized protective solutions even where the very tightest installation tolerances are called for. The SECURE 500 and SECURE 600 grades offer high or even extreme hardness levels coupled with good toughness, for example where the sides of a limousine need particular protection. Its exceptional toughness makes SECURE 450 the ideal solution for ensuring optimal underbody protection against explosive charges (blast). SECURE M for armored military vehicles required to guarantee best possible protection against explosions or ballistic threats. The SECURE M ballistic steels with hardness grades ranging from 300 to 600 HBW enable the design of fully protected armored vehicles with optimized basis weights besides which the excellent formability and weldability of these steels enable a broad diversity of development options. SECURE M 500 as basic protection for the bodywork and SECURE M 450 as underbody protection against explosive charges (blast) ensure comprehensive vehicle protection. The extremely hard SECURE M 600 steel is the preferred solution where adaptive add-on protection is required. Our Technical Customer Service is available for any further information and will be happy to provide processing recommendations for SECURE ballistic steels.
