Session S3552 Room 113 S3552 - Using Tesla GPUs, Reality Server and Penguin Computing's Cloud for Visualizing Product Customizations (Presented by Penguin Computing) Arend Dittmer ( Director, Product Marketing, Penguin Computing ) Penguin Computing's public HPC cloud Penguin Computing on Demand (POD) provides compute power for HPC applications through NVidia Tesla GPUs. To make it easy to leverage NVidia Tesla GPU resources for rendering tasks Penguin is hosting migenius' Reality Server. The RealityServer platform is a 3D web services software that leverages NVidia Tesla GPUs to deliver interactive, photorealistic applications over the web, enabling product designers, architects and consumers to easily visualize 3D scenes with remarkable realism. The session will discuss the workflow for using Reality Server on POD. Using Fluid Inc's Configure offering as an example the session will illustrate how retailers can leverage POD, NVidia Teslas and the reality server platform for scalable, fast-tomarket, and easy to manage product customizations. Session Level: All Session Type: Talk Tags: Cloud Visualization; Remote Graphics & Cloud-Based Graphics 2

Quick Facts Founded in 1997 with a focus on custom-built linux systems Acquired Scyld Software to bring increased ease of use to general HPC user Launched Penguin-On-Demand (POD) in 2010 as an HPC as a service offering in the cloud Broadening focus to include three key areas with associated products and services: High Performance Computing, Efficient Data Center, and Cloud Services Added global 24x7, 4-hour support to serve customers in over 40 countries 2500+ customers Private equity backed Based in Fremont, CA with offices in San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington DC, Boston

Penguin On-Demand (POD) Services - 30 Million Commercial Jobs and Counting Uses POD to satisfy rapidly expanding computer simulation needs Provides their genomics analysis software to their customers worldwide on a custom POD Replaced Amazon AWS cloud usage with POD workflow migration system Nissan uses POD for ongoing crash analysis (2,000+ cores) Public/private partnership to provide on-demand compute across campuses 10

What is POD On-demand HPC pay-per-use system Compute, storage, low latency fabrics, GPU, non-virtualized $0.06 to $0.24 per core hour $0.10 per GB-month storage Robust software infrastructure Full automation User and administration space controls Secure and seamless job migration Extensible framework Complete billing infrastructure Complete HPC solution Custom product design Site and workflow integration Managed services Application support HPC support expertise Skilled HPC administrators Leverage 13 yrs serving HPC market 11

POD Automation Installation Life Technologies - Ion Torrent Custom, branded portal based on POD Automation suite Desktop gene sequencing application Project moved from Amazon to POD by Ion Torrent Pure virtual environment competes directly with Amazon functionality Automated data upload from customer s ion torrent server (30 minutes to 4 hours) 12

NVIDIA Turned to Penguin Computing When NVIDIA had a request by Fluid to use their solution, Fluid Configure on RealityServer, for Virtual Merchandising, they turned to Penguin Computing. The most economical way for Fluid to leverage the RealityServer solution and build their Fluid Configure, was to use Penguin Computing s HPC as a Service offering Penguin on Demand (POD) POD provided Fluid a way to take advantage of the power of NVIDIA s GPU technology without having to acquire at a great expense the computing hardware and expertise required.

Why Penguin? POD is a Turnkey Service with HPC Expertise Included Definition Examples HPC Retail Price Point HPC as a Service Hybrid (virtual and physical) HPC cloud infrastructure plus HPC environment, services and support Penguin Computing $0.10 per physical core hour * $0.10/GB-month Platform as a Service Virtualized infrastructure plus Web services to deliver cloud computing AWS $1.30 per virtual server hour (CCI) Infrastructure as a Service Outsourced storage, hardware, servers and networking Rackspace $0.96 per server hour (monthly contract) Hardware as a Service Servers and network for rent Numerous $0.08 per server hour and up (monthly contract) * Typically we see only 50 to 70% actual core utilization on HPC servers so the actual cost of Amazon, Google or Microsoft is 1.4 to 2 times the cost of POD 20
