Connecting THE UK S REGIONS to the Future. FASTER. gatwickobviously.com // @LGWobviously

Connecting British Businesses to the Future // We have spent the last 6 months listening to hundreds of businesses at a series of meetings, conferences and events from Newquay to Inverness. The question over the UK s aviation capacity is an important issue for businesses up and down the country. UK businesses have told us that the 3 most important issues for them are: 1. Connections 2. Cost Regional connectivity is crucial for UK companies. Business leaders across the country have told us that they want more direct flights to more global destinations from regional airports. However, equally important is good connectivity to London as a destination in itself as well as a way to access direct flights and connections to international hubs. Gatwick is the best option for improving connectivity around the UK. It already serves more domestic destinations than Heathrow whose domestic services have been progressively cut back. By 2050, Gatwick will serve 15 UK airports. A second runway at Gatwick would serve 440 destinations by 2050 and deliver more additional flights per week than expansion at Heathrow.Expansion at Gatwick will enable 95million passengers to fly in and out of Gatwick every year by 2050 - over 25 years that means 170 million more passengers than at an expanded Heathrow. Businesses want access to real choice and competitively priced flights. Expanding Gatwick is the only way to strengthen the UK s airport system and inject competition into the industry to ensure that it is passengers that benefit from expansion. Only Gatwick can cater for all types of airlines flying to both long and short haul destinations. Gatwick provides a highly efficient airport for these airlines which keeps their costs low, and as a result, prices low for business travellers. Currently 1 in 5 passengers using Gatwick are travelling for business. The Competition Commission s decision to break up BAA s monopoly led to huge passenger benefits. Since being privately owned, Gatwick has seen dramatic increases in passenger service and satisfaction levels. Heathrow is already the world s most expensive airport. With a third runway, Gatwick estimates that Heathrow charges would rise to around 40 per passenger while Gatwick s would only rise to 12-15. 3. Certainty Businesses want certainty that a new runway will actually be built after decades of delay. A new runway at Gatwick can be operational by 2025 due to the relative simplicity of the project. Gatwick does not have many of the large challenges that Heathrow faces such as the requirement for large tax payer input, the need to put the M25 in a tunnel and a congestion charge for drivers. The land for a second runway has been safeguarded at Gatwick since 2005. The new runway would be developed without impacting the existing operations of the airport and, due to the largely rural location of Gatwick, the impact on the local area would be limited compared to Heathrow. Gatwick s plans are deliverable and future-proofed. By sharing the load between different airports, the UK s system will be stronger and more resilient for the future and will result in more competition, choice and certainty for tourism, business and leisure. For UK businesses, an expanded Gatwick would mean more choice, quicker transfers, access to a wide range of carriers, more cost effective fares and a better customer experience. 2 Connecting THE UK S REGIONS to the Future. FASTER.

What regional businesses think // SHEFFIELD David Child, Company Director, Chair of The Social Economy Forum and Chair of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce & Industry Council, said: My personal view is that the deliverability and simplicity of the plans for Gatwick make it the preferred choice for Sheffield and the UK in general. Gatwick expansion maintains the balance of capacity for London whilst allowing the regional airports to continue to develop and thrive. From a business perspective, I support this as a wholly private sector funded project and would suggest the substantial subsidy required by Heathrow would be better invested in improving transport Infrastructure around our Great Northern Cities. Edinburgh John Barr, Director, Ian Dickson Travel Service, said: In my personal opinion the logical option for the additional runway capacity based on connectivity, competition, cost and minimal impact on local communities is Gatwick Airport. Newcastle Insure the Box is a fast-growing insurer with a service centre in Newcastle, employing over 330 people with other offices London and Epsom. Joint Chief Executive Andy Haynes said: With most of our staff based in Gibraltar and Newcastle, we are reliant on the regular flights to and from Gatwick that connect us to the capital and to flights to the rest of the world. I support a second runway at Gatwick with an increase in connections and business destinations. Reading Oracle is an world leading international technology organisation with its UK headquarters in Berkshire. Simon Barnard from Oracle said: Expanding Gatwick is the solution for the 21st century - it will meet the demands of increased air travel and allow the UK to compete at a global level while having the least negative impacts on the local community and environment. Major questions would need to be asked of any approval for Heathrow that demands public finances to aid the project, while Gatwick would utilise private funding and not put strain on the public purse. The case seems clear that Gatwick is the obvious answer to expand the UK economy and deliver a sociably acceptable solution. LONDON John Stapleton, Co-Founder of the New Covent Garden Soup Company and Founder of brand Little Dish, said: I rely on the connections around the UK and between London and Europe/the USA that Gatwick already provides. I support Gatwick s case for expansion as it will clearly provide more cost-effective and regular flights that UK small businesses need to grow and prosper. Penzance TorFX is a foreign currency specialist employing 80 people in Cornwall and a further 80 people in London. Ashley Warden, Financial Director said: As a fast-paced and growing business, we rely heavily on the regional flights that connect us. Our team are in and out of Gatwick continually to meet colleagues, clients and opportunities in London but also to connect to the hundreds of business destinations in Europe and the rest of the world. As a business we feel expanding Gatwick is the right option for businesses based around the UK. It will provide the required service, capacity, connections and competition needed. Farnborough Andrew Finney, Chairman and President, Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and Managing Director of HCR Group Ltd : The expansion of airport capacity in the South East, to meet proven demand, is vitally important to UK business. Gatwick is ready to go and entirely privately funded - I can see no reason to delay. The examination of additional expansion at Heathrow should continue in parallel.
