new construction & replacement windows featuring EnergyCore A Mathews Brothers Family Product

The dawn of our next generation High Performance New Construction and Replacement Windows More than just a window To say that the Clara Starrett is a window, is like saying Babe Ruth played ball, Caruso sang, or Mozart wrote music. No, this product is more like a symphony a harmonious blend of individual cutting-edge technological breakthroughs, designed to provide high-performance results without sacrificing aesthetics. The framing material is the EnergyCore Fusion Insulated System the result of innovative technology in material extrusion. The profiles contain integral cellular insulation, strategically located in critical chambers, to provide outstanding resistance to energy flow in its various forms. The glass options ¾" or 1" or 11/8" allow for multiple glazing configurations. Whether you are looking for acoustic performance to reduce unwanted outside noise, thermal performance to reduce energy costs or structural performance to meet commercial building requirements or all three the Starrett series will meet your needs. The glazing package is further enhanced by Duralite non-conductive warm-edge spacer. It combines six essential components a polycarbonate spacer with air pocket design, non-conductive stiffeners, a 3-sided moisture barrier, low-permeability adhesives, stabilizers, and an encapsulated desiccated topcoat to provide a highly efficient, durable and reliable seal. There is no question about it if you are looking for a window system which will provide decades of unsurpassed performance, will reduce your energy bills from the very first day it is installed, and enhance the beauty of your home, then Clara is the woman for you! On the cover: Casements, picture and shape units.

Clara Starrett Mathews was a formidable woman, but then, she had to be. In 1898, after the deaths of her husband (Sanford) and her son (Frank), she was put in the unique position of assuming the presidency of Mathews Brothers. In typical Maine fashion, she did what she had to do together with her daughter-in-law (Addie) and her daughter (Maude) she continued to run the company. This made Mathews Brothers the largest company in Maine to be run entirely by women. When you consider that women would not be granted the right to vote for another twenty years, this was indeed a bold task. Yes, Clara was a formidable woman, and it is for this reason we chose her as the namesake of our most formidable window. Learn more at mathewsbrothers.com Yesterday, today, and tomorrow As Americas s oldest window manufacturer, we at Mathews Brothers have seen a lot of changes from our home on the Atlantic Coast. In the 155+ years we ve been making windows and doors, we ve watched ships move from sail to steam to nuclear. We traded our oil lamps and water wheels for electric lights and power saws, and we helped America grow during the second Industrial Revolution. Today, changes come at a much faster pace. What was state-of-the-art yesterday has become commonplace today. Whether you re a homeowner, architect, builder, or remodeler, you are inundated with confusing and sometimes conflicting information. Ultimately, we all want to make the right choices for our family, for our community and for the earth. Over the years, we ve heard our share of trends, fads, and snake oil salesmen. We know there s no shortage of misleading and distorted performance claims. So, when we discover something truly unique and meaningful, we sit up and take notice. That s what happened when we first learned about EnergyCore, a remarkable technological breakthrough from Mikron Industries. This patent-pending fusion insulated process blocks thermal conductivity three times better than wood, four times better than rigid vinyl, and six times better than fiberglass. EnergyCore is 100% recyclable, is weldable and can be formed into a wide range of radius and geometric units, unlike fiberglass. This combination of structural superiority with sustainable, earth-friendly components that are not only aesthetically appealing, but also have a wide range of design features, makes the Clara Starrett family a truly unique product offering. mathewsbrothers.com 3

the role of high performance Windows Triple glazing, more than just a another piece of glass At first glance, triple glazing seems pretty straightforward. If a sealed insulating unit of two pieces of glass works to reduce energy loss and sound transmission, then three ought to work even better, right? Well, yes and no. The vast majority of today s energy-efficient windows use ¾" dual pane insulating glass unit. This has long been shown to provide the most effective insulating air space between the glass layers. So, a triple glazed unit has to be more than just an additional layer of glass, it has to incorporate an air space wide enough to be effective. That s why the 11/8" glazing pocket on the Clara Starrett family is so critical it allows us to reach high performance thermal and acoustic numbers which were unreachable a few years ago. While less innovative windows rely on multiple layers of Low-E glass in order to reach high performance numbers; the Clara Starrett window can reach or exceed the criteria of the U.S. DOE R5 High Performance Window Program without the use of multiple layers of Low-E glass. This means that the Clara Starrett window delivers the performance that you desire without compromising visible light transmission or natural solar heat gain. What s the difference between U-Factor and R-Value? While the U-factor is used to express the insulation value of windows, R-value is used for insulation in most other parts of the building envelope (walls, floors, roofs). A lower U-factor means less energy conductivity or loss, and greater energy efficiency. To compare R-value & U-factor, divide 1 by the U-factor number. Example: a.20 U-factor equals a 5 R-value (1/.20 = 5).

Double-Hung, Transom, & Picture Windows Double-Hung Windows The classic American window, and a standard in our buildings since colonial days, doublehung windows define the traditional home. Both upper and lower sash glide smoothly and evenly, allowing fresh air in through the bottom, while allowing stale air to escape at the top. Both sash tilt-in with the touch of a button, so cleaning the exterior glass is easy. Dual locks (depending on width) and a fully weatherstripped interlock provide resistance to air and water infiltration. Enhance your windows with grilles (we offer a variety of styles and designs), or a factory applied exterior paint finish, or exterior trim² or select all of the above the choices are yours. Picture or Transom Windows Bring in more light without sacrificing performance. Picture units align perfectly, whether placed above, below or next to your double-hung windows, allowing you to decorate your walls with windows.

The fusion-welded frame and sash are designed to accommodate wider, high-performance triple glazing systems. mathewsbrothers.com 7

Casement & Awning Windows The architect s choice for both contemporary residential and commercial applications, casement windows offer a clean crisp exterior appearance. The sashes of casements open outward either right or left, and can be combined with stationary units. Casement windows are side hinged, allowing increased ventilation by capturing passing breezes and channeling them into your home or building. Articulated hinge hardware¹ on the casement windows actually provide access to the exterior glass, making it easy to clean from the inside of your home. Awning windows are top hinged and open outward from the bottom. Awning windows can be combined side-by-side, stacked, or with stationary units. Of course, the same grille choices are available for casement and awning windows, with the addition of a Simulated Check Rail² option. This unique option replicates the look of a double-hung window, so you can retain the colonial look while still receiving the benefit of a casement window.

Glazing Packages & Features Glazing Class 2 (standard package) Our clear dual pane ¾" insulating glass units combine two panes of glass sealed, creating an air space, separated by a Duralite non-conductive spacer. This glass offers maximum visible light transmittance and superb energy efficiency in most climates. Glazing Class 3 This ¾" dual pane glazing package combines one piece of clear glass and one piece of Low-E glass sealed, creating an air space, separated by Duralite nonconductive spacer. This package provides better year-round performance and decreased energy costs. Glazing Class 4 Same features as Glazing Class 3 with the addition of argon gas fill in the air space. By choosing options like Low-E glass with argon, our windows will meet the most stringent ENERGY STAR requirements. Glazing Class 5 (G-R5) This package uses 11/8" triple glazing technology that combines two panes of clear glass and one pane of Low-E glass, creating two air spaces that are filled with argon gas, separated by Duralite spacers. Glazing Class 6 This 11/8" triple glazed technology package combines two panes of Low-E glass and one pane of clear glass, creating two air spaces filled with argon gas, separated by Duralite spacers. Special Glazing Class We offer a 1" triple pane glazing package when SDL grilles are desired. Please contact your local dealer for more information. Glazing is also available with the following options: Tempered Often referred to as safety glass, is available in window units to meet specific building and safety codes. Laminated Two or more panes of glass are bonded together by a durable plastic interlayer, which enables the glass to strongly resist penetration by impacting objects. Provides the ultimate in UV blockage while also reducing levels of sound transmission significantly. Obscure and/or Tinted The combination of texture and color can transform your space, adding personality and complexity. See U.s. DOE R5 on page 13 In warm weather, Low-E glass reflects the sun s energy and reduces heat gain in the home. In cold weather, Low-E glass reduces the amount of heat loss by reflecting it back inside. Low-Emissivity (Low-E) coatings are microscopically thin metal layers that are deposited on a window surface to help keep heat on the same side of the glass from which it originated. Low-E insulated glass provides the best year-round performance and decreased energy costs. In the winter, by reflecting heat back into the home, Low-E glass helps keep homes warmer providing improved comfort and reduced condensation. Low-E glass blocks 83% of harmful UV rays and 96% of the sun s infrared heat, so homes will stay cooler in the summer and interior furnishings fade less. Argon gas is much denser than air, so it provides a more effective barrier against heat conduction through the glass. Combining Low-E glass with argon gas creates even greater energy savings and decreases the U-factor. By choosing the options like Low-E glass with argon, our windows will meet the most stringent ENERGY STAR requirements.

Built with Innovative Technologies Making the ultimate in energy-efficient windows requires the ultimate in framing and glazing technology, working together. Herein lies the secret of the Clara Starrett family of windows. The patented EnergyCore framing with its AirCell insulating core technology provides the lowest conductivity rating of any window material in the world. This superior framing material allows you greater freedom when choosing your glazing package. Whether you choose ¾" dual glass package or the 1" or 11/8" triple glass package, the beauty of the outside world still shines through while providing you an inside environment that s comfortable and inviting. Regardless of the glass you choose, all of our insulating glass units are made with Duralite warm-edge spacer technology. Duralite is part of a highly energy-efficient insulating glass spacer system known as Envirosealed Windows which assures consumers that the insulating glass spacer system in their windows is the most energy-efficient choice on the market. EnergyCore technology performs better to save more energy than any other insulated window frame R-VALUE HIGHER IS BETTER LOWER IS BETTER U-FACTOR Hollow vinyl frame EnergyCore frame R5.6 R3.3 U.30 Dual Glazed Unit w/argon R3.9 U.26 Dual Glazed Unit w/argon U.18 Triple Glazed Unit w/argon* *Based on U-factor improvements, 1-1/8" triple glazed (low-e/clear/low-e), with Duralite spacer, argon filled insulated glass casement unit. The NFRC Label Defined (National Fenestration Rating Council) Mathews Brothers window and door products are NFRC certified. A complete listing can be found at www.nfrc.org. U-Factor measures how well a product prevents heat from escaping a home or building. The lower the U-factor, the better the window insulates by keeping the heat in. Ratings between 0.20 and 1.20. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how well a product blocks the sun s radiant heat. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat the window allows into your home. Represented by a number between 0 and 1. Visible Transmittance (VT) is an optical property that indicates the amount of visible light transmitted. The NFRC s VT is a whole window rating and includes the impact of the frame which does not transmit any visible light. While VT theoretically varies between 0 and 1, most values among double- and triple-pane windows are between 0.30 and 0.70. The higher the VT, the more light is transmitted and the higher potential for daylighting. Select windows with a higher VT to maximize daylight and view. mathewsbrothers.com 11

non- metal warm-edge Spacer Duralite warm-edge spacers = Improved Efficiency Clara Starrett windows use this superior warm-edge insulating glass sealant system for improved energy efficiency and resistance to condensation, greater comfort, and lower heating and cooling costs. Did you know that the Duralite spacer inside your window s insulating glass unit can improve the energy efficiency of that window by as much as 10 percent? That is a lot of energy savings for such a small component. In addition to saving energy, which also reduces how much you spend to heat and cool your home, Duralite can also reduce condensation on the glass. Less condensation and reduced energy costs mean a healthy, more comfortable home. The Duralite spacer is a component laminate design that optimizes the use of a number of spacer components. All spacers need adhesives, sealants, structural elements and desiccant to perform. They also need to last a long time under adverse conditions inside your window frame. Duralite is designed to seal your window better and longer, while increasing energy savings compared to other types of spacers. Exterior Interior When Duralite non-metallic insulating glass spacers are used, glass edge is up to 45% better insulated against energy loss, creating a higher performance thermal barrier. Encapsulated desiccated topcoat Moisture-resistant bond line adhesive 3-sided non-metallic continuous moisture barrier Sightline stiffener for smooth surface Polycarbonate spacer with air pocket design (traps air between corrugation)

performance tested American Architectural Manufacturing Association Since 1936, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) has stood as a strong advocate for manufacturers and professionals in the fenestration industry. And today, stands as a representative of both the residential and commercial sectors. National Fenestration Rating Council The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is a nonprofit, public/private organization created by the window, door, and skylight industry. It is composed of manufacturers, suppliers, builders, architects and designers, specifiers, code officials, utilities, and government agencies. The NFRC has developed a window energy rating system based on whole product performance. The NFRC label provides the only reliable way to determine the window energy properties and to compare products. The NFRC label appears on all products certified to the NFRC standards and on all window, door, and skylight products which are part of the ENERGY STAR program. At this time, NFRC labels on window units give ratings for U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), and Visible Light Transmittance (VT).
