Blended Learning @ MCS
21 st Century Learning To be an effective educator in the 21st century we need to replicate in the classroom the world in which students are living (The Innovative Educator, 2008 ) Square peg-round hole? Better example would be infinite shaped pegs through a multitude of MCS sized holes
Blended Learning Goal To support average to above average students with a hybrid traditional/ online education starting in the 2015-2016 school year Byproduct: taking students farther, meeting needs, addition of transfer/homeschool students to MCS
The Need Service to our own students needs Outliers (Latin, Calculus BC, Homebound) Competitive market Ability to offer best of both worlds While virtual classrooms can offer a huge selection of course levels and subjects, some students want or need the added socialization and in-person teacher attention that a brick-and-mortar school can provide.
Implementation Scenario 1 Home schooled students transfer in and get best of both worlds: online course work and traditional teaching for courses at their choosing (science, band, etc ) Scenario 2 Current MCS/ traditional students can choose an online course to replace an existing course OR choose an elective we can t offer (German, Japanese, Latin, Business )
Benefits 21st century model for education. Matches what students experience at collegiate level Expected student growth: many families choose online schools but would love a hybrid offering locally An additional choice to help meet the needs of all students
Teacher s Role Recruit/ communicate with potential enrollees Communicate directly with parents regarding progress Schedule students into online curriculums as well as traditional NMS courses Support students online learning by monitoring progress, conference weekly with each student, and help assist with curricular questions as they arise
Flexibility Pending state/ MCS board approval, a students day/ weekly schedule has the chance to be flexible and meet students needs Partial in school plus partial home access and progress with online curriculum
Middle School Needs one dedicated lab with 20+ computers (Room 916 with updates) certified staff person online curriculum: Get Fueled/ Aventa
