ASH WEDNESDAY during this campaign of Christian service, let us begin with holy fasting and fight against spiritual evils so that we will become strong with self-discipline {control}. Blessing and Giving of Ashes Dear brothers and sisters, let us humbly ask God our Father, to bless { } these ashes; with his grace, we will put on our head, with humble penitence. Pause. [O] God, you { } are pleased to see us people humble doing works of penance, and you { } respond with mercy offering us forgiveness. Listen to our prayers, and in your kindness bless these your people, your servants, with ashes on their foreheads, so that as they begin the journey of Lent they become worthy {good} with pure {clean} minds, to celebrate the Paschal Mystery of your Son. The Priest invites people forward, signing to each person before placing ashes on their head:

Repent, and believe in the Gospel. Or: Remember you { } are dust and you { } will become dust again. After the distribution of ashes, the Priest washes his hands and continues with the Offertory. Creed is not said/signed. we offer you { } the annual {yearly} sacrifice for the beginning of Lent, we ask you { } to help us through works of penance and charity, that we will turn away from dangerous pleasures.
