Introduction One of the tools that UAL uses to help you learn about and avoid plagiarism and to help detect it when it does occur is Turnitin. Provided to UK universities by JISC, Turnitin scans submitted work against a large database of websites, books, journals and previously submitted papers identifying matches of text. What does Turnitin provide? Turnitin is a web service that Enables institutions and staff to carry out electronic comparison of students' work against electronic sources including other students' work. Helps to prevent and detect plagiarism by comparing submitted papers to billions of pages of content located on the internet and their own proprietary databases. Displays results of comparisons in custom "Originality Reports" which are easily accessed via Moodle. So when a paper is scanned by Turnitin, the system produces two pieces of information: A similarity score, which identifies how much of the submitted work Turnitin can identify as being matched against another source An originality report, which identifies each match in more detail and allows more detailed investigation of the original source Turnitin does not in itself identify plagiarism, this remains an academic judgement. However the score and reports can provide valuable evidence in making this judgement as well as a useful resource to support students in developing their own knowledge about plagiarism and referencing and their wider academic writing skills. Turnitin CAN Turnitin CANNOT Comprehensively and simultaneously search the internet other published works, and other student papers. Detect multi-source plagiarism Detect collusion Save time get quantitative feedback on all students work in the time it takes to search a single phrase in Google Encourage student originality Prove plagiarism Prove intent Provide conclusive evidence Centre for Learning & Teaching in Art & Design(cltad) Page 2 of 6

How can Turnitin help you? If used, Turnitin Assignments are set up within a Moodle course you are enrolled on. Once you submit something, both you and your tutor will be able to see the original submission and, if set up for you to view, the Turnitin Originality report. This report will help you improve your academic practice and avoid inadvertent plagiarism. See Turnitin: Interpret the Originality Report guide How to submit to Turnitin via Moodle 1. Log into Moodle 2. Click on the course where you need to submit from My Moodle or the navigation pane on the left 3. Click on the assignment title in your course home page. The assignment will be indicated by a Turnitin icon which appears to the left of the assignment title. E.g. 4. You will see the assignment summary which will contain the assignment name, description/instructions, start/end dates and the maximum marks available. 5. Click on the My submissions link. 6. There are four actions to perform on the submissions page: a) select submission type if required (upload a file or text submission) b) in new window that appears insert the assignment title (follow any submission instructions provided in assignment brief) c) Browse and upload the file for file submission OR copy and paste in text. Centre for Learning & Teaching in Art & Design(cltad) Page 3 of 6

or d) d) Select the check box to confirm that the submission is your own work. e) Click on Add Submission. Your assignment will now be uploaded to Turnitin for checking. You may now also receive two emails one confirming your Turnitin profile, one confirming your e- submission (see Appendix 1) Dependent upon the settings that your tutor has enabled you may or may not be able to view the similarity report produced upon submitting your assignment. If this setting has been enabled, then once the assignment has been uploaded you ll notice that the Similarity report column shows as Pending. It can take up to twenty minutes for the similarity percentage to be displayed dependent upon the size of the document and other factors. Centre for Learning & Teaching in Art & Design(cltad) Page 4 of 6

If you are unable to view the similarity report then you will be notified of this once you have submitted the assignment. e.g Note: Students are not able to view originality reports for this assignment. You have made the maximum number of allowed a submissions. Tutors also have the ability to determine the following: Whether a report is generated immediately on first submission and the first report is final (= you do not get a chance to resubmit or view the report) Whether a report is generated immediately, reports can be overwritten until due date (= you can submit as often as you like until the due date and receive reports until then) Whether a report is generated on the due date ( = you do not get to see a report even if allowed to submit more than once before the due date) How to access the Similarity Report 1. Click on the assignment title in your course home page. 2. Click on the My Submissions link. 1. Click on the percentage figure displayed in the Similarity column to view the report The Turnitin report will load in a new page. It will check your assignment against a variety of sources. Click on the Grademark tab to view specific tutor comments about your work (if any) Similarity figure This is the Originality tab where you will be able to see the originality report based on your assignment. Your assignment displays here. The match overview is shown here and will be displayed in percentage match order. Centre for Learning & Teaching in Art & Design(cltad) Page 5 of 6
