BACKGROUND / INTRODUCTION In the late stage, degenerative age-related alterations can lead to destruction and loss of function in the affected tissue structures and can be accompanied by developmental disruptions, overload and traumatic injuries. The processes underlying these complications are complex and to date poorly understood. The development of a causal therapy is therefore very difficult.
