OVERALL HIGHLIGHTS: ios reversed a decline in activation share and won share from Android. The release of the iphone 6 and iphone 6 Plus accounted for all of this gain. iphone 6 outpaced iphone 6 Plus in its first partial month, representing 85 percent of these new devices to be activated. Custom app activations more than doubled quarter over quarter and grew by over 700 percent year over year becoming the most widely activated app category. Behind custom apps, secure IM and secure browser dominated the smartphone. They ranked #2 and #3 respectively on this form factor. This continues a trend of exponential growth in custom app development over the last three years. With this quarter s growth acceleration, custom apps took the lead as the most activated app category on the Good Dynamics Secure Mobility Platform.
Custom Apps Take the Lead but Document Apps Follow Close Behind The incredible rise in custom app development catapulted it from the fourth most activated app category to number one. Today, custom apps represent 28 percent of all apps on the Good Dynamics Secure Mobility Platform. However, close behind are a set of third-party, Goodsecured apps, commonly used in document-based workflows, including document editing and document access. Together these documentoriented apps account for 37 percent of all apps. Secure browser, secure IM, note taking and business intelligence followed. TOP 5 APP CATEGORIES ACROSS DEVICES INSTANT App Usage Substantially Differs By Form Factor App usage by form factor differed substantially. Custom apps were a clear leader on smartphones, representing 29 percent of all smartphone apps. However, secure IM and secure browser followed as the next most widely utilized apps on this form factor. Document-oriented apps followed further behind. In contrast document editing was the clear winner for most popular applications representing 36 percent of the apps on tablets. Customs apps followed at 27 percent. Secure browser and secure IM proved less popular on these devices. While businesses are using custom apps across all their devices, the usage pattern on smartphones and tablets do seem to diverge. Smartphone users utilize their devices primarily to get quick access to pertinent information, while tablet users are using their tablets for more involved document-oriented workflows. OVERVIEW OF GOOD MOBILITY INDEX METHODOLOGY The metrics cited in this report have been directly generated from Good s internal data, as aggregated from all devices activated across Good s worldwide customer base in Q3 201 Good analyzed activations, by month, among all its global customers that had at least five activated devices over the quarter, to draw conclusions on the overall trends for net new activations across ios, Android and Windows Phone platforms. Analyzing the long tail of net new device activations by platform provides unique insight into not only the popularity of individual devices and form factors, but also the platforms that enterprises prefer for enabling employees to access business data and applications. Due to the fact that RIM devices use only the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for corporate email access, Good does not have insight into BlackBerry handset activation trends; and they are not reflected in this report.
