REQUIREMENTS FOR B.A. ECONOMICS MAJORS (NOTE: All requirements except free electives must be taken for a letter grade. Pass/Fail status courses may only count as free electives.) University Requirements ENGL 110 Critical Reading & Writing with a minimum grade of C- ( credits). credits of a Multicultural Course. Discovery Learning Experience (DLE) ( credits). This could be a winter, summer or semester study abroad, an internship course, an independent study or an approved experiential learning course. See the course schedule at http://www.udel.edu/courses for course offerings. First-Year Experience (FYE) BUAD 110 Basics of Business. Students that matriculated prior to 201 fall may satisfy this requirement with another course designated as FYE. Students that completed an FYE at the University of Delaware prior to becoming an Economics major are not required to take BUAD 110. University Breadth Requirements (12 credits with a minimum grade of C-): All students at the University of Delaware are required to take a minimum of 12 credits of University breadth requirements credits each from courses designated as Creative Arts and Humanities, History and Cultural Change, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology. Students must pass these courses with a grade of C- or better. Note that students must take breadth courses from four different subject areas (e.g. the four- letter subject code ACCT, HIST, etc.). Students may not use a course that is cross-listed with a subject area that has already been used to satisfy a university breadth requirement. Students enrolled in a single major may not satisfy the breadth requirement with courses in the subject area of that major (e.g. chemistry majors may not use CHEM courses). Students who are enrolled in more than one major or degree are allowed to meet the University breadth requirement by taking approved breadth courses from within the subject areas of their majors. The requirement may be fulfilled through a course or courses taken to complete other degree requirements, subject to the limitations above; however, credit hours may be counted only once towards the 120-credit hour minimum required for the degree. Arts & Sciences Second Writing Requirement (minimum grade C-) An Arts & Sciences second writing course involving significant writing experience including two papers with a combined minimum of,000 words to be submitted for extended faculty critique of both composition and content. This course must be taken after completion of 60 credit hours. Appropriate writing courses are designated in the semester s course offerings. Only the specific sections designated within each academic term will satisfy the second writing requirement. Please check the UDSIS registration system to ascertain whether a particular course section will be offered as a second writing course. Additional Breadth Requirement Economics majors follow the University of Delaware breadth requirements. A complete list of courses satisfying breadth requirements may be found in the undergraduate catalog at http://www.udel.edu/catalog. Courses used to fulfill the University Breadth Requirement above may also be used to fulfill the Economics Breadth Requirements. The breadth requirements consist of courses in each of the following areas: Creative Arts and Humanities (9 credit hours) *No more than 6 credits may be taken in any one department. Social and Behavioral Sciences ( credit hours) *No Economics courses may be taken. Minimum grade of C- is required to also fulfill the University Breadth Requirement. Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology (7 credit hours) *This requirement includes one associated lab credit. MATH 201, MATH 202 and STAT 200 will not apply. Economics Requirement Economics majors must take a minimum of 0 credit hours of economics courses in which they receive a grade of C- or better. These 0 credit hours must include ECON 101, 10, 00 or 01, 0, two 400-level courses, and four 00- or 400-level courses. Credit will not be allowed for the following set of corresponding courses: ECON 251, ECON 255, ECON 00 and ECON 01. Credit will not be allowed for both courses of any of the following sets of corresponding courses: ECON 2 and ECON 4; ECON 44 and ECON 444; ECON 60 and ECON 46; ECON 81 and ECON 48; ECON 90 and ECON 490; ECON 415 and ECON 422. Always refer to the undergraduate catalog course descriptions section for prerequisites and duplicate course information. Mathematics Requirement Three credits of MATH 114, MATH 115, MATH 117, MATH 221 or MATH 241 are required with a minimum grade of C- or better. Six credits of statistics is required, MATH 201 and MATH 202, each with a minimum grade of C- or better. Note that MATH 201 fulfills the Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Technology University breadth requirement above provided a C- minimum grade is earned. Foreign Language Requirement Students must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language by completing the intermediate level course (107 or 112) in an ancient or modern foreign language. The number of credits and initial placement will depend upon the number of years of high school study of the foreign language. Any language courses taken to prepare the student for the intermediate level course may be applied as free electives. Related Work Requirement Nine credits chosen from any 00-level or higher courses in Accounting, Anthropology, Business Administration, Computer Sciences (except CISC 55 and CISC 56), Finance, Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Statistics. Also acceptable are ACCT 207, ACCT 4

208, any 200-level or above MISY courses, and MATH221 or MATH241 and any 200-level or above Mathematics courses requiring calculus as a pre-requisite except MATH08. Courses may be used to satisfy both breadth requirements and related work requirements simultaneously, however, the credits may count only once toward the 120 credits needed to graduate. Free Electives Free elective courses may be taken in any department to bring the number of total credits to the required 120 needed for graduation. Free elective courses may be taken on a pass/fail basis, but no more than one course per semester may be taken pass/fail in addition to courses only offered pass/fail. No more than 8 courses total (24 credit hours) may be taken on a pass/fail basis. *A maximum of 45 credits in Economics courses may be applied to the degree. *A maximum of credits of BHAN 120 may be applied to the degree. Honors students, juniors and seniors are advised by Dr. Elizabeth Bayley. Students majoring in Economics are part of the Economics department. Students admitted to the Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics as undeclared may freely elect Accounting, Economics, Economics Education, Finance, Financial Planning, Hotel, Restaurant & Institutional Management, Hospitality Industry Management, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Operations Management, or Sport Management majors if they do so prior to October 1 of their sophomore year. Note: Many students take courses through the Winter and Summer Sessions to reduce their regular semester course load. These special sessions normally offer only introductory level courses. If you want to take a course somewhere other than UD, be sure to get the course pre-approved by the department that offers the equivalent course and your College s Dean. You will need a copy of the course description and/or syllabus. The College or University must be AACSB accredited if the course is a business course. 5
