The total volume of petrol sold for April 1997 is 1,9% lower than for April 1996. The total wholesale trade sales of petrol for April 1997 amounted to 904 719 kilolitres, of which 320 600 kilolitres (35,4%) was sold in Gauteng. Petrol sales in Gauteng for April 1997 are 2,1% lower than

for April 1996. Seven of the nine provinces show decreases in the sales of petrol for April 1997 compared with April 1996. The total sales of petrol to garages and other resellers decreased by 1,4% and 2,4% respectively over this period, while sales to the agricultural sector, the public authorities and other business users decreased by 15,1%, 6,2% and 9,6% respectively. The wholesale trade sales of automotive diesel oil for April 1997 amounted to 525 916 kilolitres, which is 2,9% higher than for April 1996. A total volume of 111 696 kilolitres, which comprises 21,2% of the total sales of automotive diesel oil in the RSA, was sold in the Western Cape. This is 18,0% higher than the sales in this province for April 1996. Due to financial restrictions, this series has unfortunately been terminated by the CSS.
