Show students the book hospital. What is that cross sign? See if anyone answers anything about a hospital. Show students a picture of a doctor. Tell students today we are reading a book about a girl who wanted to be a doctor. Experience: How will I build background knowledge and common schema? Read Penelope Popper book doctor. Talk about the different ways books got damaged. Reinforce a good way to turn pages and how to hold the book so the spine isn t damaged. Feel free to paraphrase a little bit if you need to. Show students how you have special glue and special booktape that is for books only and reinforce that kids should not try to fix books themselves. You Do It (Independent Practice) Have students look through books to see if they need repaired (and they put them in the book hospital. Reinforce they are NOT using tape, glue, etc themselves they are NOT book doctors.

Day 2 The Boy who was Raised by Librarians McPherson USD 418 Lesson Plan Template Learning Outcome: Reinforce Book Care, Introduce Illustrator Talk about how librarians help you in the library Background Information: Date: Two Subject/Grade: 1st Grade Prerequisite Skills Needed for Learning: N/A Learning Resources: Opening Prepare the Learner Attention: How will I get the students attention? Paint brush (Alternatively, a KSU image) Ask students if they know what an illustrator is? The illustrator of this book is Brad Sneed. He went to KSU to learn how to illustrate and now he lives near Kansas City. Experience: How will I build background knowledge and common schema? This is a story about Melvin, a boy who spent so much time in the library, that it was as if the librarians had raised him! Everything has its place in the library and Melvin likes it that way. His favorite people Marge, Betty and Leeola are always in their places behind the reference desk. When something interests Melvin, the librarians help him find the very best information on the subject. Melvin can always find the answers to his questions and a lot of fun in the library. Then one day he goes off to college to learn new things and read new books. Body Teach the Content with Rigor Instruct: How will I teach the content and build competency? Day 3 The Library Gingerbread Man GINGERBREAD PREP!!! You will need to put Gingerbread cards out in the library beforehand. Put them near the Library Labels. Also McPherson USD 418 Lesson Plan Template Learning Outcome: Title Books go in a special place Background Information: Date: Three Subject/Grade: 1st Prerequisite Skills Needed for Learning: Learning Resources: Gingerbread cards with Numbers on Them Opening Prepare the Learner Attention: How will I get the students attention? Put the Gingerbread Man in a small bag, book, etc (hide him) Open it very carefully and pretend to sniff. Tell them the character of the book today smells very good. Tell them that you have to be careful because he will run away if you pull him out of the bag. Have the Gingerbread Man peek out of the bag and make a big show of stuffing him back in and closing it up. Ask students what they know about the Gingerbread Man. Use the title finder to find the title of the book. Experience: How will I build background knowledge and common schema? Read the Library Gingerbread Man, stopping at each area to put up the number and card for the different sections, making sure to put them in order! Please shorten the number to just 398, 180, 818, etc. At the end read aloud the numbers with the class in order ex. 001, 180, 292, 298, etc
Point out how the first number goes 0, 1, 2, 3 Reinforce that books go in a SPECIAL PLACE and students need to use SHELF MARKERS You Do It (Independent Practice) As a class go through the library looking for special numbers (ie labels on the shelves) and the Library Gingerbread Man! You will end up at the Little Free Library where there is another Library Gingerbread Man!
