Top 5 things you need to know about retinoic acid or tretinoin for skincare & aging. Tretinoin is the acid form of vitamin A and is also known as all-trans retinoic acid or ATRA. It is a prescription drug commonly used to treat acne and aging skin. It is available as a cream or gel (brand names Aberela, Airol, Renova, Atralin, Retin-A, Avita, or Stieva-A). With all acidic forumulas used on the skin, you need to do your homework before prescribing or using it in your skin routine. Retinoic acid is easily absorbed by the skin cells and helps to prevent the onset of wrinkles, dark spots and other signs of aging by regulating cell production. Although retinol is also a vitamin A, it has to first be converted into retinoic acid before it can be absorbed by the skin hence the efficacy of creams that contain retinoic acid supersedes preparations that contain retinol as the primary ingredient. Retinoic acid can be extremely irritating and drying on the skin when used in large does and therefore should only be used in prescription monitored amounts for short periods of time. 2.
