Sondex Drilling Division LWD and other While Drilling Measurement devices Traditional Wireline measurements are difficult to obtain in horizontal and highly deviated wells. Primary formation evaluation data is essential for oil companies when assessing their reservoir potential. Real-time data acquired during drilling provides the capability to geo-steer in order to land the well accurately, thus maximising production capacity. Gamma Ray Calibrator and Gamma Ray Sensor Geolink Gamma Ray Tool Gamma Ray logs allow basic shale/sand sequence identification. Real-time gamma logs provide better understanding and control of drill string positioning. Staying within a formation or drilling to a planned depth can be achieved with more precision, saving valuable rig time and minimising the need for costly corrective drilling. The Geolink Gamma Ray tool can be attached below the Geolink directional tool string to acquire the natural gamma radiation profile of the formation as drilling progresses. A patented scintillation detector is used in the Geolink Gamma Ray tool. It is designed to withstand the high levels of shock and vibration the tool assembly is subjected to during drilling. The detector provides necessary ruggedness and reliability, plus a high quality, high accuracy measurement. 1 7 /8in O.D. probes, 15,000 psi, 150 C 1 3 /4in O.D. probes, 20,000 psi, 150 C 3 1 /2 to 9 1 /2in O.D. Drill Collar applications Guardian Pressure During Drilling Tool PDD Changes in effective circulation density or downhole accumulation of cuttings often go undetected causing unnecessary increase in operational risk. Downhole detection of annular and drill pipe hydrostatic pressure during drilling minimises this risk. Guardian PDD is a modular unit, fully compatible with the entire range of Geolink MWD tools that provides the benefit of an accurate pressure measurement. Acquired pressure data is monitored at surface in real time and also stored in tool memory, allowing the driller and the MWD engineer to respond quickly to cuttings loading in the annulus, water flows, well kicks, etc. It is especially useful for monitoring and controlling ECD during under-balanced drilling operations. 1 3 /4in O.D. probes, 15,000 psi, 150 C 3 1 /2 to 9 1 /2in O.D. True Resistivity Induction Measurement Tool TRIM LWD technology becomes particularly important when it is not possible to acquire Wireline data. The True Resistivity Induction Measurement (TRIM) is the only LWD tool in the world that delivers a Wireline comparable induction resistivity log while drilling. TRIM is a Geolink MWD extension option. Physically connected below the Geolink directional, gamma and Guardian probes, it provides a quality resistivity measurement as close to the bit as possible in conventional drilling assemblies. Not all LWD applications require multiple depth resistivity measurements. TRIM is a deep reading resistivity device attainable via a comparatively moderate investment. TRIM s main benefit is that it can accurately measure formation resistivity beyond the invasion profile. Data is acquired in real-time and stored to memory. TRIM is an ideal solution for development field applications. As TRIM can detect bed boundaries much sooner, due to its superior depth of investigation, it is also a good option for geo-steering. TRIM's unique modular antennae and electronics assembly design result in a tool that is highly reliable, yet simple to operate and maintain. Available in 4 3 /4 to 9 1 /2in O.D. Drill Collar sizes, 15,000 psi, 150 C (20,000 psi tool also available on request) TRIM Induction Resistivity Sub (antennae array close-up) Compact Propagation Resistivity Tool CPR Compact Propagation Resistivity Tool CPR When oil companies need to rely on LWD data to assess their reservoir potential, quality information is essential to achieve primary formation evaluation and accurate petrophysical modelling. The Compact Propagation Resistivity (CPR) with three transmitter-receiver spacings uses two frequencies (400KHz and 2MHz) and can provide a total of six resistivity measurements with six depths of investigation. Logs can be generated from real-time data or data stored in memory. The modular design of the CPR allows most wear surfaces to be easily replaced, minimising maintenance time and cost. A battery switch and modular battery design ensure efficient battery utilisation. Developed and patented by Ultima Labs a Sondex company the CPR Depth Compensation System is contained within an antenna array that is up to 50% shorter than competing products while providing state-of-the-art compensated resistivity data at a significantly lower cost. The CPR can be combined with all Geolink MWD systems via a simple wired connection, or with Pilot MWD retrievable/reseatable systems using a Sondex wireless Microhop interface (under development). Sondex Drilling Division While Drilling Data Transmission Options All drilling environments are extreme, yet different conditions present various challenges to real-time data transmission systems. Variable flow rates, solids content, lost circulation material, underbalanced drilling, etc. will all have a different impact on signal quality and decoding capability. The right technical solution for the job saves rig time. Sondex R/R Pulser (3 1 /2 to 12 1 /2in O.D. Drill Collar applications) The Sondex Retrievable/Reseatable pulser creates a sequence of positive pressure increments by opening and closing a pilot valve. Its unique motor drive exerts up to 100 lbs-force providing high tolerance to LCM and optimum performance in all environments. Geolink Transmitter (4 3 /4 to 9 1 /2in O.D. Drill Collar applications) The Geolink Negative Pulse Transmitter creates an instantaneous decrease in pressure by opening and closing a normally closed internal valve. The pressure pulses are detected at surface and decoded to provide the data supplied by the downhole sensors. UltraSlim Geolink Transmitter (3 1 /2in O.D. Drill Collar applications) The UltraSlim Geolink Transmitter is a low cost option to convert a Standard Geolink MWD for re-drilling and re-completion applications. The UltraSlim transmitter is a unique assembly that incorporates a negative pulse transmitter into 3 1 /2in O.D. beryllium-copper subs and collars. Positive Pulser and selection of Mule Shoes The Geolink Transmitter The Geolink UltraSlim Negative Pulse Transmitter E-Link Transmitter (4 3 /4 and 6 1 /2in O.D. Drill Collar applications) The E-Link Transmitter generates a sequence of electromagnetic pulses that travel through the formation. MWD data is transmitted up to four times faster than with mud pulse systems. E-Link is ideally suited for underbalanced drilling as it is capable of operating in multiphase flow regimes. Sondex Drilling Division While Drilling Surface Acquisition Systems Limited rig floor space and hazardous environments require compact, intrinsically safe, surface acquisition systems. The ability to take in third party depth data, or the capability to process data in real-time, determines whether the operator is satisfied at the end of the day. Modularity and powerful signal processing are essential to performance. Geolink Navigator screen display Geolink Surface System Geolink Navigator Geolink equipment users are provided with a specially written MWD/LWD software application for Microsoft Windows 2000/XP operating environment, Navigator for MWD applications and Navigator Plus for MWD/LWD. Navigator software is designed for compatibility with all Geolink downhole tools and surface equipment. Navigator provides a user friendly, easy to use application which decodes, processes and presents all acquired data irrespective of the transmission option used. Geolink Surface Systems Geolink Surface Systems are modular and easily transportable. The Directional MWD surface system is upgradable to allow the addition of Gamma, Resistivity and other LWD data. Geolink Surface Systems are intrinsically safe for use in hazardous environments. Data is supplied to external systems through a WITS stream output port. When used with Navigator, it is also capable of accepting depth encoding from third party rig instrumentation systems. WellTracer and Pilot Surface System Both the WellTracer and the Pilot Surface Systems consist of a central, easy to use, back-lit touch screen interface unit. This unit, while compact, is robust and optimised for drill floor placement. Wireless two-way communication between the interface unit and a lap top computer allows efficient survey data monitoring on the drill floor, independent data handling, regular tool health checks and battery life verification. Sondex Wireline Division Gathering data and performing operations within producing oil & gas wells enables the life of a well and ultimate reservoir production to be extended. Sondex Wireline equipment is designed to operate and take precise measurements in the hazardous downhole conditions. Sondex customers can purchase a comprehensive range of equipment in order to perform efficient and profitable operations. Production Logging Maximising cost-effective hydrocarbon recovery relies on accurate in-situ production measurement. Sondex Production Logging Tools provide the most comprehensive set of flow, fluid identification and reservoir monitoring information available in order to identify hydrocarbon sources, reduce water production and keep operating costs to a minimum. In an industry driven by economics, PL information can make the difference in determining whether to go ahead with remedial work, or even the development of an entire field. Production Logging provides a profile of well production to clients. Later in the life of a field the logs are run to facilitate optimal reservoir management and to diagnose problems. Fluid Identification Flow regimes in a well can be complicated. It is necessary to know whether you have oil, gas, or water; how much there is and where each of these enter the well. A wide range of fluid identification tools are available for this purpose and can be run in combination for optimum results. The tools include various fluid density measurement tools, Water and Gas Hold-Up Tools (GHT) and the Capacitance and Resistivity Array Tools (CAT & RAT). Flow Rate Knowing what types of fluid you have in your well, you then need to know where fluids enter the well, how fast they travel and where they exit. With the combination of velocity, well diameter, temperature and pressure measurements, volumetric flow rates may be calculated for each formation. Leaks may also be identified. Sondex provides an extremely diverse selection of flowmeters. The models used in a particular well are selected according to the type and size of completion, well contents and predicted flow velocities. Different flowmeters can be combined in the toolstring including the Spinner Array Tool (SAT), the Fullbore Flowmeter (CFB), In-Line Spinner (ILS) for measuring flow in tubing or a Diverter Basket Tool (DBT) specifically designed for low flow rate production zones. The Production Dual Caliper (PDC) provides two diameter measurements at 90 to each other across the inside of the well to help with calculating volumetric flow rates. It will also assist in identifying completions and in locating major damage. Production Dual Caliper PDC 8 Sondex Wireline Division Production Logging www.sondex.com
The highly accurate Sondex Quartz Pressure (QPS) and Platinum Resistance Thermometer (PRT) tools respond extremely rapidly to changes in the well parameters. Their measurements are critical for a number of purposes including production analysis, reservoir modelling, or simple leak detection. Depth Correlation and Deployment Gamma ray tools respond to natural radiation of different formation layers. As well as Lithology identification, they are used for depth correlation. Casing Collar Locators (CCL) also provide depth correlation, as well as an indication of where a well is perforated or damaged. A Head Tension Unit (HTU) may be used to help prevent damage to the toolstring. To cope with the wide variety of operations run by Sondex customers, the Production Logging tools are available in a choice of models and diameters. In the Short Combination Toolstring (SCT) sensors are combined in shorter sections to reduce the length of the string. Standard tools are 1 11 /16 in in diameter; the SCT is available at 1 11 /16 in and 1 3 /8 in. Multiple Array Product Suite MAPS In inclined and horizontal wells, the lighter phases migrate to the high side of the well, the heavier phases to the low side. This may result in the phases travelling at different velocities or directions, thereby complicating the production analysis. The Multiple Array Production Suite (MAPS) combines the Spinner Array Tool (SAT), Capacitance Array Tool (CAT) and Resistance Array Tool (RAT) to measure phase hold-ups and velocities with an array of sensors mounted around the well bore. Calculated volumetric flow of gas, oil and water from these tools increases the accuracy of reservoir management in deviated and horizontal wells. Hostile Environment MAPview oil and water Sondex Production Logging tools can be operated at up to 177 C (350 F) and 15,000psi (103MPa). The 6-sensor HADES toolstring however, can run in wells up to 300 C (572 F) and 20,000psi (138MPa). Sondex Wireline Division Well Integrity Oil and Gas wells penetrate deep into hostile environments. Geological movement, sand production, H 2 S, CO 2, high temperatures and high pressures can all contribute to reducing the well integrity. If corrosion or other damage is identified, remedial action may be taken to extend well life. Radial Bond Tools RBT In order to achieve the most efficient production from hydrocarbon bearing zones and minimise water ingress, it is vital that cement provides proper isolation between formations and structural support to the casing. Radial Bond Tools (RBT) transmit an acoustic signal to casing and segmented receivers record the returned signals from around the casing to determine the quality of the cement job. If channels or other flaws are present, these will be identified and mapped. 3 1 /8in O.D. tools provide 8 segments of data and the slimmer 1 11 /16in O.D. tool 6 segments. Both tools can run on monoconductor cable or slickline. A very well proven technology, RBTs are economical to run and can be combined with Sondex Casing Inspection tools. Multifinger Imaging Tools MIT A family of tools are available for different sizes of pipe with 24, 40, or 60 fingers. Each finger contacts the inside wall of the pipe and measures the inner radius with fine resolution and accuracy, sufficient to detect small defects, such as pitting, cracks, scale build-up and of course buckling, collapse and holes. The different sizes enable a tool to be selected that will maximise coverage, capturing as much detail as possible. Magnetic Thickness Tools MTT Employing magnetic flux principles with a transmitter and 12 receivers the Magnetic Thickness Tool (MTT) surveys a string of pipe to identify metal loss. Reference to the MIT data determines whether the metal loss found with the MTT is internal or external. Well Integrity Visual Analysis WIVA By combining information from the MIT and MTT, images can be created on a computer screen in 3 dimensions. Colour schemes, meshes, arrows and numerical data can be added to help an engineer understand the structure and condition of their well. In particular, the dimensions and type of completion can be shown together with the location and magnitude of any damage. WIVA can also be used to display MIT or MTT data independently. Well Integrity Processing, Evaluation & Reporting WIPER Data from the MIT and MTT can be automatically processed to identify certain features in the well; most obviously the collars. After setting certain parameters, the software carries out a joint by joint statistical analysis and builds a report summarising the condition of pipe in the well. Reports from subsequent logs on the same well may be compared to see how pipe is changing over time and affect the prevention of a failure. Sondex Wireline Division Cased Hole Formation Evaluation The ability to generate high quality formation evaluation data is often compromised by operational or economic circumstances. This may lead to less than optimal drilling or completion decisions. Cased Hole Formation Evaluation enables the required data to be gathered at a later date. The information allows seismic correlations, hydrocarbon detection, porosity and lithology determination, rock mechanics and cement evaluation. There are cost benefits in reducing risk through flexibility in well site logistics and operations, effectively minimising time on site. Asset values can be increased through enhanced hydrocarbon recovery and better estimation of reserves. The data generated is of the highest quality. The CHFE Platform has undergone extensive modelling and environmental testing to ensure the trustworthiness of measurements and the ruggedness of equipment. As the latest in a long line of high specification logging instruments designed by Sondex, the CHFE Platform has been developed to be fit for purpose. Compensated Neutron The Sondex Cased Hole Formation Evaluation (CHFE) Platform provides petrophysical, geophysical, reservoir and integrity answers after the well has been completed. This is accomplished with a combination of data from Array Acoustic, Compensated Neutron and Gamma Ray instruments. The CHFE Platform allows logging in tubulars from 4 1 /2in up and conveyance in all imaginable ways. The tools are slim, short and rigid; they are capable of logging with real-time display or to memory. The real-time data is available on standard open or cased hole logging lines. Multiple Array Sonic 12 Sondex Wireline Division Cased Hole Formation Evaluation www.sondex.com
Sondex Wireline Division Acquisition Systems To run the most economical logging job, tools should be run in combination to gather data in the minimum number of runs. Logging data is an extremely valuable asset and should be securely stored on a robust machine, suitable for rugged transportation. Ultrawire System The Ultrawire tool bus system has been designed with an extremely fast data rate to cope with multiple sensors on tools and allow for the combination of numerous tools in one string. This reduces total intervention time. Any Sondex Ultrawire tools can be run in either Memory, or Surface Read Out mode. Memory Mode Surface Read Out Mode Ultrawire data from the logging tools is converted to Ultralink telemetry for transmission to the surface at typically 100kbit/s. Sondex offers a choice of surface systems: The rack mounted Multi-tasking Integrated Digital Acquisition System (MIDAS) The DAS2000 Each have many duplicated hardware features for reliability and can be configured to meet specific operational requirements. The portable logging system offers the flexibility to run Sondex tools from any logging unit and data is safely stored in a tough military specification laptop. Portable Logging System Depth Time Recorder Time referenced log data is stored downhole in a battery powered memory section, allowing operations on slickline or coiled tubing. The Depth Time Recorder (DTR) records depth and tension. API format logs are generated by combining the tool data with the DTR data on a laptop computer. Some services require specific equipment such as a Shooting Panel or Free Point Indicator Panel and tools such as Shooting CCLs, Shock subs and Noise tools all of which are supplied by Sondex. MIDAS www.sondex.com Sondex Wireline Division Acquisition System 13
Sondex Wireline Division Tractor The nature of a horizontal well requires that tools, for any form of intervention work, have to be pushed along the well. Downhole Tractor MDT The all electric tractor provides an elegant solution for deploying equipment between the heel and toe of a horizontal well. The tractor is deployed only after a simulation program has been run to prove the job is viable. It is attached to a standard production logging cable above the equipment requiring deployment and lowered into a well. When gravity ceases to have an effect, the tractor s drive wheels are opened and power applied under the control of a computer to impel it into the well while pushing the passenger equipment in front. Tractor data is monitored while driving so its position and load status are constantly available, reducing the risk of problems. Once the target distance is reached the tractor is shut down and the intervention carried out as a normal operation. Pipe Recovery During drilling, completion or workover operations time and money is lost if the pipe string becomes compromised. Quick, accurate and safe pipe recovery operations are required to solve the problem. Sondex offers a range of Free Point Indicator tools (FPI) in a variety of diameters and configurations. While the driller works the pipe from surface the Free Point Indicator gives a reading of how much movement is transmitted downhole and therefore whether the pipe is free or stuck. The maximum amount of free pipe can then be backed-off or cut and salvaged from the well. The Downhole Electric Cutting Tool (DECT) is deployed using standard single conductor production logging cable. The DECT generates machine shop quality cuts without the use of dangerous explosives or chemicals and may be used on chrome steels. Using precise positioning and computer control the DECT can cut tubing without damage to nearby completion hardware.
