Lance Armstrong, born September 18, 1971, got his first bike when he was seven. It was an ugly brown bike with yellow wheels, but to Lance, it meant freedom. At the age of sixteen, Lance Armstrong joined a racing team. Soon, he became known in the United States, but that wasn t enough for him. In 1992 he became a professional cyclist. He had high hopes for his first race in Spain but he finished the race in the last place. He was sad and defeated but he did not give up. He just decided to train harder. On August 29, 1993, he raced in Norway in a 160-mile-long (257 km) race! It was very rainy, but luckily Lance was used to bad weather. People say that he pumped so hard that day that he was biking at 60 km/h! He crossed the finish line as the youngest new champion of the world! In 1996, when Lance was 25, a tragic event occurred. Doctors told Lance he had cancer. He had an operation to remove cancer from his brain. He also had to take a lot of drugs. He spent a full year without cycling. He had to fight for his life. In October 1997, he was well again. He decided to return to cycling. At the beginning, he was very tired. He tried very hard and slowly he became stronger, although many people believed his career was over. Lance joined the U.S. Postal Team. They gave him the chance that he needed. In 1999, he was ready to race again in the Tour de France. The media wrote a lot about the cyclist who had once had cancer. Lance Armstrong became a known name. In the race, he rode as hard as ever even up the mountains. He knew he could win. And he certainly did. Including this first victory, Lance Armstrong has won Tour de France seven times and became the only cyclist in the world who has ever done that. After his victory in 2005, he retired from active racing. He is a real hero who proved to all of us that anything is possible. He took his childhood dream and made it a reality. I think it was great. I could go and watch Ocean s Twelve or Anything But Love, but I don t like that kind of movies. They are typical American movies. On the other hand, Garfi eld is always funny. Everybody likes Tom and Jerry and Garfi eld is similar to that and even better. Besides, I simply love this fat lazy cat. (68 besed) 136
