The Gettysburg Address Literary Focus: Refrain A refrain is a sound, word, phrase, line, or group of lines that is said again. A refrain creates an echo in the listener s ear. It builds rhythm and helps stress important points. As you read the Gettysburg Address, look for repeated sounds, words, and phrases. How do they strengthen Lincoln s message? Reading Skill: Dialogue with the Text When you enter into a dialogue with the text, you focus on what you don t understand, ask questions about those parts, and then try to answer the questions. Use a chart like this one. Questions Responses Four score and seven years ago? Score = 20 years How many years is that? 4 x 20 = 80; 80 + 7 = 87 years What date is he talking about? Lincoln s speech was given in 1863. 1863 minus 87 years = 1776. That s the year our nation was founded. (I never thought I d have to do arithmetic in English class!) Into the Speech The Battle of Gettysburg took place in 1863, during the Civil War. In that bloody three-day battle, Union forces stopped Confederate forces from moving north. The battle left at least 51,000 soldiers dead, wounded, or missing. When the battlefield was dedicated as a cemetery, President Abraham Lincoln was asked to make a speech. REFRAIN I like the way the first two words of the speech repeat the or sound four score. This starts the speech on a strong note. The sound of the letter f is also repeated in lines 1 3: four, fathers, founded, freedom. This gives the speech a nice poetic flow. DIALOGUE WITH THE TEXT The end of paragraph 2 talks about why they have come to the battlefield. I re-read lines 7 9. Then I re-read lines 14 17. I think Lincoln wants the people to get on with the great task. I think the task is to win the war. 1 5 10 15 20 Four score and seven 1 years ago, our fathers formed a new nation on this continent. 2 This nation was founded on freedom, and it was dedicated 3 to the idea that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged 4 in a great civil war. We are testing whether that nation, or any nation like it, can last. We meet here on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate part of that field to the people who died here so that their nation would live. It is proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, 5 we cannot dedicate this ground or make it holy. Brave men, living and dead, struggled here. They have made this ground holy, not us. The world won t remember what we say here, but it will never forget what these brave men did here. The job of the living is to finish the work that the brave men here fought for. We must dedicate ourselves to this great task. 6 We should feel increased devotion to the cause because these brave men died here. We must be determined that these men should not have died in vain. 7 We must make sure this nation, under God, will have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people will not disappear from the earth. The Gettysburg Address Refrain Chart A refrain is a sound, word, phrase, line, or group of lines that is said again. Speakers use refrains to please the listener s ear and to stress important points. In the left-hand side of the chart below are line numbers from The Gettysburg Address. Re-read each set of lines. Then, in the right-hand side of the chart, list repeated sounds, words, or phrases. from I Have a Dream Literary Focus: Allusion Have you ever quoted a line from a favorite movie? If so, you have alluded to that movie. An allusion is a reference to something that most people know about. Martin Luther King, Jr., adds power and beauty to his words by using allusions. Reading Skill: Noting Style Style is the way a speaker or a writer uses language. One writer might use simple words and sentences. Another might use poetic language, repeated words, or strong rhythms. Use these sentence starters to take notes about King s unique use of language. King likes to use words such as... King likes to repeat phrases such as... Into the Speech Have you ever dreamt about the future? What would you like to see? What are your hopes and dreams for the future? from Based on the Speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. Background On August 28, 1963, more than 200,000 Americans took part in a march in Washington, D.C. The people wanted Congress to pass a civil rights bill. This bill would give equal rights to African Americans. People from all races and from almost every state were in the march. All day, they gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial to sing songs and listen to speeches. The day was almost over when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., began to speak. He started out by describing how African Americans were denied all the rights and benefits that America gives its other citizens. Then, he put aside the speech he had written and began to speak from his heart. He shared his dream of America. This dream was heard across the country. It touched the hearts of his listeners. ALLUSION In line 3, King quotes from the Declaration of Independence. He might use this allusion to remind people that our nation is based on equality. NOTING STYLE In lines 11 12, King repeats the word together. It helps King stress a key point that it takes many people working together to change the world. ALLUSION To what song does King allude in lines 13 16? ALLUSION The last line of the speech alludes to an old African American folk song. King may be using this quote to remind us that no one is truly free until all people are free. 1 5 10 15 20 25 My friends, I have a dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will live out the true meaning of its creed: 1... that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that my children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I return with this dream to the South. There we will work and pray together, fight together, stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. One day all children will sing, My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring. If America is to be a great nation, this must become true. So let freedom ring from the hilltops of New Hampshire and from the mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the Alleghenies 2 of Pennsylvania, the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado, the peaks of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia, from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee, and from every hill in Mississippi. When freedom rings everywhere, that is the day when all people black and white, Jews and Gentiles, 3 Protestants and Catholics will join hands and sing, Free at last!
