The Next Meeting will be Thursday, July 21, 2016, 6:00 PM, at the Shinn s. The address is 3025 Big Flat Rd. This is a pot luck, so please bring a dish to share, hot dogs and lemon aide provided. We will be decorating pen boards, making posters and finishing up demonstration projects, also please bring your books so they can be signed off on and Questions answered. Fair Decorations There official theme for this year s fair is It s in your jeans. Every year we meet to make decorations for the livestock barns. All members and exhibitors displaying projects in the 4-H building are also welcome to help. Our club always tries to find a way to unify all the projects displayed. Bring your scissors, glitter, and fun animal decorations. If you have not brought your denim pockets we need them now. You must also bring a picture (4/6) of yourself for our boards. (it can be with your animal) Fair Duty: Exhibitors: In order to get your $25.00 back don t for get to show up for a fair set up day. Primary set-up day for the livestock barns, exhibit building and country fair area is Saturday, July 23 rd, starting at 9am. Fair Interviews and Information: Remember to read the county newsletter, emails from Colleen and the fair book. There are detailed descriptions for interviews and what is going on at the fair. The fair book can be found on line. It is really important to read the section re-guarding what you are bring to the fair. Page 1 of 8

Project Books: How are your project books going? If you need help or have questions please call your project leader. Project books must completed and work sheets completed to the day of interview and brought to your interview, pictures need to be included. Livestock Members: Please bring the following information on an index card if you haven t already: Market: Your name, your animal s name, tag number, breed, breeder, sex, beginning weight. Breeding: Your name, your animals name, class, breed, breeder, sex. Café Shifts: Our Shift is on Thursday morning August 13 th ; 6:00-11am. The shift changes at 8:30, sign up for this will be at our meeting. If you are showing hogs please do not sign up. This is mandatory for club and we need parents and members, so please sign up for one of the shifts, 6am-8:30 or 8:30-11, at our meeting. Advertise for the Livestock Sale: It is very important for livestock members to contact prospective buyers. Making a card or a letter with a picture of your project can help you get a higher sale price and attract more prospective buyers. You can even call or email prospective buyers and remind them about the sale. The morning of the sale you may introduce yourself and tell them thank you for coming. During the sale you may thank you re buyer for buying my animal, the sales comity does not want buyers distracted from purchasing so no asking for support once the sale begins, also they have asked us not to give gifts to the buyers during the sale, please deliver to them the week after the fair. Hay Project: Thank you for those who helped bring the hay in this year. I heard you worked hard and long. More pictures will be posted on Blue Mtn web page Page 3 of 8

Parking: We have Fat Cats parking lot (across the street from animal barn) for the week of the fair. $10.00 / spot for members and & $15.00 / spot for non members. The money is a fundraiser for our club. If you would like a spot please pick up parking permit from me on Thursday and pay your $10.00. After Thursday I will let non members purchase the spots. Herd Parent: This year I am asking for parent help during the fair. While our kids will be signing up for barn duty I am asking the parents to sign up for herd duty. You can pick a 2 hr time slot that you can hang with everyone in the beef area. During this time you will gently remind the kids to pick up Page 4 of 8

garbage, do their barn duty, interact with the public, etc.~ We would love to win the herdsman award. You can wander to the other animal barns to check on things. You do not need to have kids with animals to participate. The hours will be from 10~6, Wed thru Sun and if everyone does a couple of shifts that would be great and besides it gives you a chance to get to know everyone even better. Important Info & Dates: In addition to the information we discussed at the club leader meeting last month, here are a couple reminders: - Primary set-up day for the livestock barns, exhibit building and country fair area is Saturday, July 23 rd, starting at 9am - Interview day is Saturday, August 6 th, starting at 9am o Exhibit Building interviews should be schedule ahead of time o Livestock interviews are first-come, first-served Horse Project interviews are this Tuesday, July 12 th, at the Extension Office Dog Project interviews are the day of the Dog Show (Saturday, July 23 rd ) - We will be doing more set-up on Saturday, July 30 th, for sure The 4 H Café schedule is attached Page 5 of 8

FAIR INTERVIEWING SKILLS INTERVIEWING SKILLS Read and practice before your interview Sunday of fair week. Why Should You Develop Good Interviewing Skills? Interview skills are a necessity of life. As you grow up you will be interviewed for scholarships, jobs, committees, etc. You will also want to interview other people you wish to hire to do jobs for you. Some examples are: baby sitter for your children, person hired to mow your lawn or paint your house. Punctuality Arrive early. It is recommended that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your first interview. Appropriate Dress 1. Button-up shirts or polo shirts. No tank tops for boys or girls. 2. No bellies showing, no underwear showing (this includes bra straps). 3. Clean/like new jeans, pants, or shorts (mid thigh or longer no gym shorts). Making a Good First Impression... How to Introduce Yourself 1. Look at interviewer 2. Shake hands with the interviewer 3. Smile! 4. Introduce yourself... Hello, I am. What to Do after the Introduction 1. Sit down. 2. Look at the interviewer. The Actual Interview At some point you will be asked about your project. This is your big chance to impress the judge! Be excited about your project! Explain why you chose this particular project and why it interests you. Tell the interviewer about any problems you encountered, and how you overcame them. Be prepared to talk about your project for at least 3 minutes. Make a list of things you can talk about, and practice talking about them before the actual interview. Remember, if YOU are not excited and enthusiastic about your project, how can you expect the judge to get excited about it? It is okay to be nervous B most people are. The judge knows they have been there before themselves. Don=t let the nervousness ruin your chances for a good interview. Ending of the Interview Wait for some indication from the interviewer that the interview is finished. Thank the interviewer, smile, shake hands again, and exit. Role Play Practice shaking hands and introduce yourself. Practice telling someone else about your project. Practice will help you to be more comfortable at your interview. What=s Not Cool? Page 7 of 8

Believe it or not, all of these have happened during the 4-H interviews: Thumb sucking or fingernail biting. Gum chewing. Bad grooming... dirty hands, fingernails, unwashed or uncombed hair, dirty clothing. Hair twirling. Wimpy handshake... but a wimpy one is better than no handshake. Eating food or drinking pop. Avoiding eye contact with the interviewer. Holding your head up with your hand. Looking bored or disinterested. Not knowing why your project is neat, special, great or exciting. If it wasn=t interesting to you, why would you bother to spend so much time doing it? You May Be Asked Questions Like: What did you like best about this project? Why did you choose this project? Have you taken this project before? If so, what should you do? What other things did you make or raise this year? What makes this a good project? What did you learn from this project? How much did it cost? Did you receive help making (raising) your projects? Do you plan to take this project again? If you didn t like this project, what will you try next year?
