NETBALL NEW ZEALAND UMPIRE THEORETICAL EXAMINATION NZ Theory SAMPLE QUESTIONS The questions provided give a guide to the type of questions that may be asked. Sample answers that would gain full marks are provided as a guide for candidates and tutors. Other forms of answers may also be acceptable in some questions. NZ Theory Examination dates Examination 1 4th Monday June Examination 2 2 nd Monday September Prerequisites Pass in NZ Regional Theory and Regional Practical Award Details Total possible 60 marks Time allowed 1 hour 30 minutes EXAMINATION FORMAT Section 1 20 marks Questions are designed to test the candidate s knowledge of game procedures. They are usually more difficult than those in the Regional examination. Section 2 10 marks Umpire Protocols will be included in this section The questions are designed to test the candidate s knowledge of umpiring procedures. Section 3 30 marks Questions may be based on any part of the Rule Book and are more challenging. Candidates must include relevant explanations to gain full marks. NZ Theory Pass Mark 51 marks (85%)

SAMPLE QUESTIONS SECTION 1 In this Section, marks may be 1, 2 or 3 for each question. 1. Play stops for an injury to White GK. How should play restart if: (a) White GK was holding the ball when play stopped? Play restarts with White GK in possession of the ball White GK s pass had gone out of court just before play stopped? Throw In Black where the ball went out 2. (a) The Umpires toss a coin to decide which end of the court they will control. (i) When is the toss taken? After the captains have tossed and informed the umpires of the result (ii) Which Umpire controls the northern half of the court? The Umpire that wins the toss (c) Which Umpire blows the whistle to end the game? Either umpire During a game, the Umpire blows the whistle to start and end each quarter. List two other (different) occasions when the Umpire would blow the whistle. 1. To penalise an infringement 2. To signal to the timekeepers to take time OR To signal a goal has been scored 3. State the Umpire s action/s in each of the following scenarios: (a) During a stoppage for an injury to Black GA, Black Coach advises the Black GS to move more in the Goal Circle. Bench Umpire advises Black Coach that no coaching is permitted during any stoppage. When play restarts award a Free Pass to White. 1 mark

During the same quarter Black GA requests a second injury stoppage. She waits on the court for the Primary Care Personnel to attend to her injury The Umpire advises the Primary Care Personnel and the GA that treatment must be off court. Black GA remains off court and the umpire restarts play. Substitution/team changes can be made at this time Total Umpire A Black Goal White Goal X Umpire B 4. On the court shown, Black scores a goal and White is to take the next Centre Pass. (a) Name the Umpire who will restart play. Umpire A (c) Black takes a Throw In at point X on the diagram above. White WD obstructs the Throw In. Which Umpire penalises this infringement? Umpire B At the beginning of the next quarter, Black takes the first Centre Pass. Which Umpire starts play? Umpire B 5. Write YES or NO for each of the following: (a) Is there any limit to the number of substitutions that a team can make in a game from the players named for the match? No At half-time, the Timekeeper realises that time for a stoppage of two minutes was not added to

the quarter just finished. Can an additional two minutes be added to the third quarter? No (c) Is the net considered to be part of the Goalpost? Yes (d) White C is suspended from play for 5 minutes. Is White allowed to bring on one reserve player to play at Centre while White C is off the court? No SAMPLE QUESTIONS SECTION 2 In this Section state the infringement (if none, answer No infringement ) and the action to be taken or just the action. Remember to state where a penalty is to be taken. Each question may be worth 1, 2 or. 1. (a) Who is responsible for signalling the Centre Pass after each goal is scored? (c) Both Umpires State two responsibilities of the umpire wearing the electronic piece? SAMPLE QUESTIONS SECTION 3 In this Section state the infringement (if none, answer No infringement ), the action to be taken and the reason for this action. Remember to state where a penalty is to be taken. Each question is worth a number of marks. 1. Black GS jumps to rebound an unsuccessful shot at goal. White GD moves into the space and Black GS lands on GD s foot. White GD catches the ball in the Centre Third, close to the Transverse Line. White GD steps backwards into Black s Goal Third on the right foot, then passes the ball to White GA who is standing in White s Goal Third. What is the infringement if any? What action should be taken? No infringement Let Play continue Explain why this action is appropriate White GD caught the ball and landed with her first foot wholly within the Centre Third so the subsequent throw is considered to have been made from that third 3. White GA is shooting for goal with Black GK defending correctly. At the end of three seconds, Black GK overbalances and places a hand on the ball. White GA runs forward to receive a pass. Black GD attempts to intercept the pass and lands close to White GA. Before the GD can move, White GA swings around and knocks the Black GD to the ground. Any work done in pencil or using Twink will NOT be marked. 3. Answer all questions on the printed examination paper. If have insufficient space for an answer, use any space on the back of the paper or you may use your own paper. Be sure to put your name on any extra sheets. Label questions carefully. Make sure any extra sheets are handed in with your paper. MARKS SECTION A Possible Score: 20 SECTION B Possible Score: 10 4. Teams referred to are BLACK and WHITE. 5. Answers should state clearly where a penalty is to be taken. Please note: (a) It is NOT necessary to specify that the infringer must stand beside and away from the player taking the penalty. Similarly, it is NOT necessary to specify that the Umpire blows the whistle when penalising an infringement. 6. Check you have all questions for each of the following: Section 1 x questions total 20 marks Section 2 y questions total 10 marks Section 3 z questions total 30 marks SECTION C Possible Score: 30 7. All sections are in the one booklet 8 Read all questions carefully and answer all questions clearly and concisely. Answer only what is asked.
