First established in 1987, Loyola s LLM program has focused on the legal, regulatory, political, ethical, and economic realities of health care delivery. Each health law course allows LLM students to focus on core skills and knowledge areas while developing practical lawyering skills. In Corporate Transactions in Health Care, for example, students prepare transaction documents and walk through the key components of major transactions. Similarly, in HIPAA and Privacy Law, students analyze and draft privacy policies. And in the Life Sciences course, students discover the intersection of health and intellectual property and become familiar with the process of approving new drugs and devices. Factor in our supportive and accomplished faculty, strong relationships with leading practitioners, and the friendly and helpful Beazley Institute staff, and it s no wonder that Loyola s LLM in health law graduates point to their experience at Loyola as a key factor in their professional success. As an attorney in private practice, I found that I needed additional legal expertise to meet the needs of my health care clients. Loyola s LLM program provided me not only with the legal knowledge, but also the familiarity with the entire health care industry that is essential to being a successful health care attorney. Anne Taylor, LLM 03 general Counsel St. Luke s Magic Valley Medical Center
D I V E R S E O P T I O N S, E M E R G I N G O P P O R T U N I T I E S Careers in Health Law Health law is unique in that it s a practice area focused on an industry, not a body of law. Health law encompasses all aspects of the legal system governing the organization, financing, and delivery of health care services. Because of its depth and breadth, the health law field affords attorneys the opportunity to practice in a variety of general areas such as transactional health law or life sciences; develop a specialty in a niche area such as physician regulation and management, insurance and risk, or biotechnology; or become involved in policy, regulation, or compliance areas. Here are just a few examples of positions our LLM graduates hold: Vice President, Associate General Counsel, Advocate Health Care Partner, Epstein Becker & Green PC Director of Ethics and Compliance, Abbott Laboratories Partner, Jones Day Legislative Attorney, American Medical Association Public Affairs Liaison, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services President, Medix Staffing Solutions Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, U.S. Army Medical Command Assistant General Counsel, American Dental Association Attorney Advisor, Social Security Administration Office of Disability Adjudication and Review

About the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy The Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy was created in 1984 in recognition of the need for an academic forum to study the burgeoning field of health law and to foster a dialogue between the legal and health care professions. Since that time, the Beazley Institute has grown to offer one of the most comprehensive and respected health law programs in the country, including four different master s and doctoral degrees for attorneys and health care professionals as well as a certificate program for JD students. The Institute sponsors many continuing education conferences and events each year; publishes a semi-annual journal, the Annals of Health Law; fields a health law moot court team; and supports the Health Law Society, one of the largest student groups at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
