Yi Liu Ph.D. Chemistry Cell: 001(401) 489-8420 Lawrenceville, NJ 08648 Email: yi.liu.cn@gmail.com SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATION -Self-motivated and productive researcher with 10 years of material lab research experience. -Plenty of experiences and knowledge in fields of polymers, coatings, nanomaterials, catalysts, magnetic materials, electrochemistry, fuel cells, energy storage et al. -Track record of working on many scientific projects in a timely manner. -Quick and eager learner for new technology fields. -Strong writing, communication and presentation skills in technology topics. -Highly organized and detail oriented team player with excellent interpersonal skills, analytical and problem-solving skills. EDUCATION 2011 Ph.D. Chemistry, Brown University, Providence, RI 2007 M.S. Polymers and Coatings, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI 2004 B.S. Chemistry, Nanjing University, Nanjing, China WORK EXPERIENCE 2011 2012 Postdoctoral Researcher, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL RESEARCH PROJECTS 2011 2012 Postdoctoral Researcher Advisors: Dr. Xiao-Min Lin, Argonne National Laboratory -Bench size and scaling up synthesis nanostructures for permanent magnet applications: I synthesized those Fe, Co and FeCo nanostructure in organic solution phase, achieved Sm reduction through naphthalide/crown ether chemistry. Those nanostructure assemblies are treated to form high performance magnets. -Fe oxide/silica core/shell nanostructures for magnetic separation: I coated a shell of silica on Fe oxide nanoparticle through the controlled hydrolysis of organic silicones. Those core/shell nanoparticles were further modified by polymers for sugar capture and magnetic separation. -Surface structure study of Pd nanoparticles: I characterized the surface oxidation structure of Pd nanoparticles modified with different organic surfactants by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) on synchrotron source. 2007 2011 Graduate Research Assistant Advisor: Prof. Shouheng Sun, Brown University -Nanostructure material synthesis: including noble metal alloys (PdPt, PtSn, PdSn, PdS nanoparticles), 1-D nanostructure (Au nanowires, Fe 3 BO 5 /SiO 2 nanorods), and Fe oxide, Fe, Co, FePt nanostructures et al. Developed novel syntheses for these materials through colloidal chemistry methods from organometallic precursors.

Carried out the structure and property characterization and investigated their applications as catalysts and magnetic materials. -Catalytic applications of noble metal alloys for various reactions such as methanol oxidation, formic acid oxidation, oxygen reduction, Heck reaction, sulfur resistant hydrogenation, and hydrogen generation from ammonia borane. Achieved an indepth and systematic understanding between the catalytic behavior and the alloy structures. -Synthesis of high performance permanent magnet based on an exchange coupled magnetic hard phase (Nd 2 Fe 14 B) and soft phase (Fe): Fe 3 BO 5 nanorods were embedded with Fe oxide and Nd oxide with a composition of Nd 2 Fe 14+x BO y which were further reduced by melted calcium at high temperatures to form permanent magnets. 2005 2007 Graduate Research Assistant Advisor: Prof. Jamil Baghdachi, Eastern Michigan University -Orderly organic silicon modified polymeric system for antifouling coatings: I have developed prototype formulations using hyper-branched polyurethane oligomers and silanes as the base resin system which was further modified with fluorine to form coating film with excellent durability, flexibility, strong mechanic property and low surface tension. -Commercial mirror back coating project: I worked with industry customers on product selection and evaluation of their properties including chemical resistant, corrosion resistant, flexibility, mechanic strength, and water permeability following the ASTM standards. TECHNICAL SKILLS -Material characterization techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM, HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), dynamic contact angle analyzer; UV- vis, NMR, FT-IR and ICP-AES; electro-chemical workstation for catalysis evaluation; X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) on synchrotron source; coating applications skills and the ASTM evaluations for coating films. AWARDS AND HONORS 2008 First year graduate student fellowship, Department of Chemistry, Brown University 2006 Outstanding Academic Achievement, College of Technology, Eastern Michigan University 2004 Top thesis prize, Nanjing University 2000-2003 People s Scholarship, Nanjing University (Three times) PUBLICATIONS 5 first author, 5 co-author journal publications and 4 conference presentations/talks.
