How to use Essential Oils - curriculum for kids Welcome to Essential Oils - curriculum for kids With plenty of hands-on activities, projects, and engaging content, this curriculum touches on all subjects in the educational rainbow. It is my recommendation to gather all required materials before starting the lessons with your children. This includes doterra oils, due to their exceptional quality. For more information on these oils, please visit my website. I have recommended ages 4-8 for these activities. Lessons and activities can be adjusted based on your child s needs. The lessons do not have to be done in the order of this book - I simply started with the oils my own children wanted to study Feel free to go at your own pace (perhaps it takes 2-3 weeks to cover one oil instead of 1 week). Skip activities that are not of interest to your children. The intent of this curriculum is to engage children with essential oils in a fun an interactive way, not to force them to complete every activity. Structure The oils are divided up by weekly outlines. This outline will describe the topic, goals, projects and trip suggestions for the week. Again, these can be expanded over more than the one week presented in the curriculum. Following the weekly outline is the oil overview. These boxes will list the subject areas and activities for each. After the overview is a complete listing of each subject and a breakdown on how to present the activities to your children. Materials Needed Lavender unit - doterra Lavender essential oil, clay pot, paints, liquid paints, paper, added extras for the bonus recipes at the end of each lesson plan. 5 other units to come

getting started Prepare for the topic by gathering any added materials you will need for the lessons. Planning ahead will offer the most benefits to teaching your child. The following activities are in outlined in the order of which they should be taught. This can be adjusted based on your child s needs, but it is recommended to start with the history of the plant as this will be required for other activities or conversations with your child. For photos and ideas on how to teach this to your kids, check out the website and see how I did it day ONE Begin with an introduction to lavender, using this video from doterra https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjbhntrtekc Ask your child the following comprehension questions or use these as a guided discussion: Where is a good place to put lavender oil on your body? How does lavender oil help your body? By smelling lavender oil, what can it help you do? (relax, be calm, etc.). Complete the body worksheet in the student manual.

day TWO Discuss the history of lavender by using the summary here: http://www.doterra.com/uk/ essentialhistory.php Complete the worksheet in the student manual, finding and colouring France. Using the instructions from the following video, teach the concept of shades and mixing colours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmtpocdan5k Have your child create up to 6 different shades of purple. They can use their shades to paint whatever they imagine day THREE Use this video to teach about how to grow lavender https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=uswougsdwr8 Use the following comprehension question for discussion: What are some important things to remember about growing lavender? Follow with a field trip to purchase a plant and a clay pot. Review again the important parts in caring for a lavender plant while painting the pot. Label the parts of the plant, using the worksheet in the student manual.

day FOUR Make lavender tea and use as many senses as you can to discuss the flavour. To incorporate math, have the child use a teaspoon to measure out dried lavender leaves. Add 1 teaspoon per 1 cup of hot water. Add agave nectar or maple syrup for sweetness and compare the difference to pure lavender tea Using a couple of different essential oils, including lavender, do a smell test Blindfold the child and hold up on oil to their nose at a time. See if they can tell you which one is lavender. Use this as an opportunity to review the benefits of aromatherapy using lavender. Depending on the age of your child, use either the letter worksheet or the sentence worksheet from the student manual. day FIVE For the final day on lavender, take your child to a lavender farm or a community garden to see lavender growing in a natural state. Have them ask the farmer or lead gardener questions they may have about lavender. Colour the lavender page from the student workbook. To complete the day, bake lavender cookies 1 1/4 cups flour 1/4 tsp sea salt 1/4 tsp baking soda 2 drops lavender oil 1/3 cup melted coconut oil 3 tbsp pure maple syrup or agave nectar Mix all ingredients in the order listed. Form into flat circles and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes (or until brown on the edges). Make lavender tea again and enjoy with a cooled cookie

BONUS - recipes Giving to Others A big part of what I want to teach my children is giving to others. Something as simple as making a gift for another person is an easy place to start with young ones. The following recipes can be made for other people, with some kept for one s self as well These recipes are simple for kids to do all by themselves, or with a little help from you. For some of these bonus recipes, added materials will be needed. These can easily be purchased online in advance or sometimes in stores. Check out my website for more details on where to purchase extra materials. Hand Scrub one part melted coconut oil one part sugar 8-10 drops of lavender oil For this project, have children make a hand scrub for a relative, neighbour, etc. Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Once fully incorporated, place in a small mason jar, tie a ribbon around it, and offer it as a gift to someone It s a nice touch to add a pretty tag with instructions on how to use it. Instructions: Place a small amount of scrub on your hand and rub, like washing your hands, for 20 seconds. Rinse with water. Bedtime Spray 10 drops of lavender oil distilled water Mix the two ingredients in a small glass spray bottle (about 2 oz). Child can use 2-3 sprays on their pillow and bedsheets before bed to create a calming atmosphere when it s time to sleep. Play Clay 2 cups flour 1 cup water 3/4 cup salt 1 tbsp oil 5 drops of lavender oil Mix dry ingredients together first, then add wet ingredients. Knead until smooth. Add dried lavender for texture, if you like Store in sealed container when not using.

in student manual: - include idea for tracing the body and using it to label parts affected by oils in parent manual - using the mini bottles as rewards each week after the completion of their study
