My level is: 4c 4b 4a COMMUNICATION Research 6c 6b 6a 5c 5b 5a 7c 7b 7a Design Brief: Creative Art for Teenagers You have been given the task to develop and create a range of mixed media artwork to display in a special exhibition. The display will be used to inspire teenagers to want to be more creative and enjoy art. For your project you will research a selection of popular artists and try out their techniques to allow you to develop your own ideas. Your work will be assessed on how well you create ideas based on your theme and research. We will explore different ways of making your ideas with textiles materials before creating a mixed media artwork based on your own theme. Level 4 I can IDENTIFY basic information based on my theme from one source that will help me to generate ideas. I can LIST information from a potential user/target market for my product. I can DESCRIBE basic technical information that I can use to help me to develop my product. Level 5 I can SUMMARISE visual information based on my theme from more than one source that will help me to develop my ideas. I can EXPLAIN how visual information gathered from existing products will help me to develop the product I am designing. I can USE economic information (how much different materials or parts cost) for the product I am designing. Level 6 I can CREATE a thoughtfully presented mood board based on my theme from a wide range of sources that will help me to develop my ideas. I can USE the information gathered from looking at the form and function of products I know well to help me to develop my own ideas. I can RELATE the information gathered in my research to my own developing ideas. Level 7 I can EVALUATE how my own ideas have been influenced by looking at the form, function and production processes of different products. I can DEMONSTRATE that I am aware of the different needs of a range of users. I can JUSTIFY how my designs show that I am aware of trends and patterns in existing products. 3

Task: Thinking about what your target user needs is an essential part of making sure that you create a successful product. Think carefully about your design brief and put as many legs on the spider diagram below: What do teenagers want artwork to be? Thinking about affordable art In small groups discuss how you think artists can make sure that the cost of their artwork is affordable for the buyer. Think about how you can learn from this when designing your own artwork. Summarise the key points of your discussion below: 4

COMMUNICATION Research This section of your communication assessment allows you to gather visual information that will help you to understand more about the product you are going to design and make. In pairs, discuss the artwork examples on this page. Think about the following questions as a part of your discussion: 1. Can you state what makes the artwork eye catching? 2. Can you give reasons why the artwork is/isn t successful? 3. Can you identify ways that the artwork can inspire you to create your own eye catching brand? Task: Label the images with the answers from the questions above 5

COMMUNICATION Research My Theme for my mood board is: Pop culture Using the theme given to you, you should now use the space below to create a mood board. The mood board must reflect the essence of your theme and also use a variety of sources (internet, magazines, objects, drawings, colour swatches etc.) to create a visually interesting design tool. 6

7

COMMUNICATION Research Artist Research: Looking at Lichtenstein in more detail Looking at how different artists create their work helps us to be inspired to develop new ideas of our own. Task: You will create a range of Lichtenstein inspired samples using different textile techniques. Fix them to pages 5 & 6 and then label them to discuss how your work is inspired by the artist. Tip: Why not try using small close up images of the artists own work on this page to help you to explain how your samples are inspired by their techniques? 8

How to label your work: Ask yourself the questions below as a guide for labelling your samples: 1. Can you IDENTIFY how your sample is inspired by the artists own work (use images of the artist work to help you to explain this.)? 2. Can you EXPLAIN how you could use the techniques to develop further ideas for your project? 9

COMMUNICATION Research Artist Research: Looking at Keith Haring in more detail Looking at how different artists create their work helps us to be inspired to develop new ideas of our own. Task: You will create a range of Keith Haring inspired samples using different textile techniques. Fix them to pages 7 & 8 and then label them to discuss how your work is inspired by the artist. Tip: Why not try using small close up images of the artists own work on this page to help you to explain how your samples are inspired by their techniques? 10

COMMUNICATION Specification Level 4 I can LIST the basic requirements for my product development. I can SELECT basic elements of the information gathered from my research to help me write my specification. I can IDENTIFY what I need to include within my product by writing in full sentences. Level 5 I can DESCRIBE what I need to include in my product as a result of my research to help me to develop a successful looking idea. I can EXTEND my specification points by using the information gathered from my research into existing products to write my specification. I can DEMONSTRATE an understanding of the purpose of research by including some exact details (measurements, costs etc.) in my specification. Level 6 I can GIVE REASONS for my specification points with clear evidence of my research findings. I can CREATE a precise list of requirements for my product including all of the details from my research (measurements, costs etc.) in my specification to help me to develop a product for my user. Writing a Design Specification Look back at the information that you have collected throughout your communication assessment work. You now need to write a list of criteria to follow when you are generating design ideas for your product. Your specification needs to be detailed and clear. You will be checking your design ideas and your product against the specification as it develops. This is how we measure the success of your final product. Example of a specification point: My product must have be a 3D object based on pop culture like the work of Holly Levell My Design Specification My level is: 4c 4b 4a 5c 5b 5a 6c 6b 6a 12

COMMUNICATION Design My level is: 4c 4b 4a 5c 5b 5a Level 4 6c 6b 6a 7c 7b 7a I can CREATE design ideas using some of my research. I can ILLUSTRATE my ideas using a thoughtful selection of drawing media. I can LABEL my sketches or models to explain my idea. Level 5 I can PREPARE models of my initial ideas and talk with other people about them to improve my work. I can EXPLAIN my ideas by adding labels to my designs to show how the range of information that I collected from my research has helped to develop my work. I can GIVE EXAMPLES of how eco-issues have been considered in my developing ideas. Level 6 I can ANALYSE other products and use the information to help me develop, model and test my ideas. I can SUPPORT my ideas fully by labelling my designs in detail to show that I have used my specification to create designs that fit the criteria. I can DEVELOP fully realistic designs showing different viewpoints to fully explain my idea in a visual way. Level 7 I can JUSTIFY how I have met the different needs of a range of users. I can DEMONSTRATE how my designs show an awareness of trends and patterns in existing products. I can DISCUSS in detail how other designers and their designs have inspired my own creative ideas. Modelling my ideas Using the design specification as a guide, present the range of ideas to show your artwork design. The images should be fully labelled to explain what materials and surface decoration techniques you have used to construct your idea. Think about the question below when labelling your work: Can you explain how your sample meets your specification points? Design idea 1 13

Design idea 2 Design idea 3 Check your work Have you fully labelled your work to explain how your designs meet your design specification and research sources? Task Peer assessment: Ask at least 3 other people to assess your design ideas against the design specification. The most successful idea (the one that meets all of the criteria) will become your final design idea for development and modelling. The design that I have chosen to develop further is:. 14

COMMUNICATION Design Final Design Idea Using the final design selected in the peer-assessment task, you should now develop this idea to make sure that it is successful. Fix a colour photocopy, photograph of your final design below. Tip: For for more marks, create a model of a small section then use the photograph for this page. Thinking about your peer assessment task, are there any changes that still need to be made to your design in order for it to function correctly and be successfully created on your product? Please use the space below to discuss what you will change and why as well as highlighting these areas on the sample above. 15

PLANNING My level is: 4c 4b 4a 5c 5b 5a 6c 6b 6a Level 4 I can LIST what tools and equipment I am going to use to make my product. I can DESCRIBE the step-by-step process to help me make my product Level 5 I can DESCRIBE my own detailed process for making my product. I RE-WRITE my plan while making my product if I make changes to improve my product. I can EXPLAIN which tools, equipment, materials (ingredients for a food product), components and processes I am going to use to make my product. Level 6 I can COMPARE different methods of making and select the best manufacture process for my product. I can JUSTIFY my choices of tools, materials (ingredients for a food product) components and processes by fully explaining how and why I will use them for my making process. Task 1 Can you list the equipment and materials you will use for your making process? Are you able to explain in the table below how you will use the equipment and materials that you have identified? Equipment or material How I will use this to construct my product 16

Task 2 Use the space below to describe the step by step plan for making your product? You may wish to create your plan in the form of a flow chart or bullet point list of instructions. 17

Task 3 Review of your plan Now you have started to make your final outcome Do you need to make any modifications to your original plan? Using a different colour pen, annotate your own planning work to show where you would add more detail or make changes to improve the level of your work. Using what you now know about your making process, can you describe an alternative method of making for one section of your product? Which method of making would be better? Can you justify your choice of making? 18
