Curriculum Overview Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BS IS) The BS IS program is a total of 120 credit hours; 77 credits in information systems/core business courses and 43 credits in general education courses. Curriculum Overview Master of Science in Management Information Systems (MS MIS) The MS MIS program is a total of 30 credit hours. For applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree in an information technology/ systems related field, UAB offers a bridge program that provides pre-requisite coursework prior to starting the MS MIS graduate program. If an applicant is recommended for the bridge program, it will be a total of 36 credit hours. There are 15-week semesters in Fall and Spring terms, and a 14-week semester in Summer term. The MS MIS program can be completed in 5 semesters (just over1.5 years). Students who start with the bridge program can complete their degree in as few as 6 semesters (about 2 years). Admission Requirements Master of Science in Management Information Systems (MS MIS) Applicants for the MS MIS program must have graduated with a baccalaureate degree in an information technology/systems related field from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Those not meeting this requirement must have: - Completed a baccalaureate degree in other areas of study from a regionally accredited college or university, or completed another graduate degree; AND - Completed the UAB MS MIS Bridge Program; OR - Submitted evidence to UAB as to significant work experience in IS/IT/computer programming, enterprise systems, databases, and/or system design and analysis; OR - Submitted evidence to UAB as to IS/IT/Computer industry certifications in computer programming, enterprise systems, databases, and/or system design and analysis. Applicants must provide evidence of relevant work experience (a minimum of 3 years of experience is preferred) Applicants must have a GMAT score of 500 or higher. Those not meeting this requirement can: - Submit a GRE combined verbal and quantitative score of 940 (score of 293 after August 1, 2011) or higher (GRE scores may not be more than 5 years old), OR - Show 5 years of relevant work experience - Show documentation of completing a graduate degree in any discipline with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale International Applicants International applicants whose native language isn t English are required to show proof of English proficiency by submitting a TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic test score. Official test scores are required and should be sent directly from the testing agency to UAB. Scores should not be more than 2 years old. The minimum score requirements are as follows: Rankings TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 on the paper-based examination, 213 on the computerbased version, or 80 on the Internet-based version IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) score of 6.0 overall with at least a 5.0 on each section of the examination U.S. News & World Report s 2013 Annual Guide to America s Best Colleges has ranked the University of Alabama at Birmingham among the nation s Best National Universities.
