Appendix 10.2 THE WFOT THELMA CARDWELL FOUNDATION AWARD FOR RESEARCH AND EDUCATION BACKGROUND In 1984 the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) established the WFOT Foundation Award (title changed at Council Meeting 2002 to The WFOT Thelma Cardwell Foundation Award for Research and Education) to encourage research into developing aspects of occupational therapy. The Award is available to occupational therapists working in any area of occupational therapy, who are individual members of WFOT and who have the written support of the WFOT Member Country in which they are a member. Membership in the WFOT must be continuous during the award period. SCOPE WFOT invites applications from individuals or teams for the Award in support of research projects which will enhance the development of occupational therapy in a significant way. As a rule the Award will not support research projects for which funds could be sought from Government supported agencies or other grant-giving bodies. The Award may be used for equipment, supplies, maintenance or technical assistance for an approved project. Commitments will not be made in which long continued support over many years is implied. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Applications for the Award will be assessed by a Committee of occupational therapy or occupational science research experts and chaired by the WFOT Vice-President. A report describing the successful project and applicant will be presented at the Council Meeting of the WFOT, held every second year. Forms for applying for the Award are found on the WFOT web site www.wfot.org. One or more Awards may be made. Applications will be assessed against the criteria listed below: 1. The quality of the research proposal including the literature review, the methodology and the significance to occupational therapy. 2. The quality of the researcher or research team. 3. The likelihood of the research contributing to the development of occupational therapy at a national or international level. 4. Support for the project proposal from relevant authorities and the member association. 5. Level of financial support from other sources. AWARD TIMETABLE Application forms are available from WFOT Delegates and the WFOT Honorary Secretary. Closing date for applications for the Award to be with the WFOT Secretary is two months prior to a Council Meeting. Any application received after that date will not be considered and will be returned to the applicant. PAYMENT OF AWARD The WFOT will normally remit a portion of the funds to successful applicant(s) within two months of the Awards being announced at a Council meeting. Notification will be sent to the member association and fifty-percent of the funds will be allocated to the successful applicant through the member association of the country. Forty percent of the funds will be forwarded to the applicant upon delivery of the interim report and the final ten percent will be remitted upon submission of a manuscript to the Editor of the Bulletin. CM2008: Appendix 10.2: WFOT Thelma Cardwell Foundation Award 1
DURATION OF GRANT PERIOD It is anticipated that the research project will be completed within two years of the funding of the research project. INTERIM AND FINAL REPORTS Award recipients are required to provide regular reports to the WFOT Executive. In the two year period of research, an Interim Report must be submitted after one year of commencement of research and a Final Report upon the completion of the research project. Within three months of completion of the project an article on the research should be submitted for publication to the Editor of the WFOT BULLETIN. PUBLICITY Award recipients are required to acknowledge the financial support provided through the WFOT Foundation Award in any publication, article or feature in the media. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Each application should cover one project and contain all the information necessary to assess it without the need for oral explanation or reference to further documentation. The form is available through the WFOT website. It should be concise with the aims and significance clearly specified. Applications that do not meet the stated criteria for content and length will not be evaluated, but returned to the applicant. The application must be sent to the WFOT vice-president at least two months prior to the WFOT Council meeting. The application must be made using the form found on the WFOT web-site. Additional documentation will not be accepted. If the project is not completed, within the time periods defined in the application, the applicant through the member association is bound to return all remaining monies granted by WFOT. AMOUNT OF AWARD FOR RESEARCH The maximum amount of award available is US$5,500 by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.
