Why should my business have accurate financial statements? Written by Joseph Burns Regardless of whether you are a soon-to-be entrepreneur, or run an existing business, it is essential that you create and maintain a timely and accurate financial reporting system. Available software such as QuickBooks or Xero make it much easier than ever to do that, provided they are set up correctly at the outset. Failure to produce timely and accurate financial statements is a recurring weakness in small businesses. Some owners and senior managers avoid this task because they prefer to work in areas in which they have greater understanding and comfort, such as the operational areas of the company. An effective and well-designed financial reporting system provides much more than simply profits and losses; it produces the numbers upon which business decisions are made. With accurate numbers, you can create a break-even model for looking at scenarios involving capital investment, changes in staffing, analysis of marketing and products, and to help establish productivity goals. It is essential for owners and senior managers to have financial tracking systems in place to provide an early warning of any potential problems. The best financial reporting systems are the basis for creating leading performance indicators, which alert you to these possible problems. They create the context and perspective in which you will spot trends and patterns. Lacking such indicators, you may not identify a problem until it becomes serious, at which point it takes more resources to resolve, with the obvious and many costs to the performance of the company. If your company is audited, having defensible financial reports is an excellent way to reduce federal or state tax liability exposure. Ignorance due to a lack of good numbers is not an effective riskreduction strategy. The stronger your financial reporting system, the better you will be able to address any potential tax issue. An effective financial reporting system enables lenders to gain clarity into your company by analyzing financial ratios, cash flow, and other financial information. Successful financing is the product of good numbers that reflect the strength of your company, and the lender s high level of confidence in the accuracy of those numbers. If there are decisions to be made with regard to succession, having a realistic valuation of the company, which begins with accurate financial statements, helps to clearly define what is at stake. Such decisions often include an emotional dimension for both owners and successors, but accurate financial information is the common ground leading to successful negotiations. For this election, there were four candidates and no member from the general membership submitted a qualifying nomination by petition. As such, no mail ballot election was held for these positions.
