21 21 21 10YJA752040 CX2010B182 Title An Overview of the 21st-Century Western Studies of Charles Dickens ABSTRACT Although Charles Dickens's critical reputation undergoes ups and downs he has been a hot topic in literary studies. Voluminous monographs and papers have laid the foundation for the Dickens industry. Western Dickens studies over the past decade exhibit the following trends firstly theory-based studies of Dickens have become increasingly varied in approach or perspective combining postmodernist interpretations with traditional ones secondly biographical studies have made more contribution to the understanding of the life and works of Dickens thirdly nonfiction studies have produced impressive results. An overview of the 21st-century Western Dickens studies can help Chinese critics broaden their critical horizon. 168
