CYPRUS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY MASTER S DEGREE PROGRAMS Academic Year 2011-2012 MS IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH MS IN EPIDEMIOLOGY AND BIOSTATISTICS CYPRUS INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND PUBLIC HEALTH IN ASSOCIATION WITH HARVARD SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH

THE CYPRUS INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE The Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health ( CII or the Institute ) is an international research, education, and technology initiative for the environment and public health. It was established by the Government of Cyprus and Harvard University to address environmental and public health issues in Cyprus and throughout a broad region, including the eastern Mediterranean, northern Africa, and the Middle East. CII provides opportunities for research, education, and training in public health to students, scholars, and professionals. The primary focus of the Institute s research is on improving understanding of the relationship between exposure to environmental contaminants and human disease. A secondary emphasis is on improving the ways that such information is used in risk and decision analysis to inform public policy. Faculty now being recruited will expand our areas of interest to include development and application of quantitative methods from biostatistics and epidemiology. This multidisciplinary research program attracts funding and recognition from Cyprus, the European Union, the United States, and other countries. The Institute is also active in continuing profesa series of public lectures, continuing professional education workshops, these programs regionally. From 2004 to 2009, the CII functioned as an independent institute in Nicosia. In August of 2009, the Institute moved to Limassol, where it now operates under the aegis of the Cyprus University of Technology School of Health Sciences, in association with the Harvard School of Public Health. THE CYPRUS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) was created by law in It is a new, public, independent university. Consequently, its values, academic character, organizational and administrative structure, with the state are not dissimilar from those in place at the University of Cyprus. The Cyprus University of Technology aspires to develop into orientation towards applied research, CUT seeks to establish for itself problems encompassing all areas of science and technology. THE HARVARD SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) is one of the leading schools of public health in the world. It was established in 1913 by an agreement between Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. HSPH now has nine departments with over four hundred faculty members and approximately one thousand master s and doctoral students. The Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics provide training in the two core disciplines of public health. Epidemiology is the study of the frequency, distribution, and determinants of human diseases. Biostatistics involves the theory and application of statistical science to the analysis of public health problems and biomedical research. The Department of Environmental Health is one of the largest departments at HSPH and includes three research and teaching programs: Exposure, Epidemiology, and Risk (EER); Environmental and Occupational Medicine and Epidemiology (EOME); and Molecular and Integrative Physiological Science (MIPS). The Harvard Cyprus Program draws on the rich research and educational capacities of these departments and programs and of the school as a whole. OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS C Science in Environmental Health and the one-year Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The two programs share a similar structure and a core curriculum, and both are taught entirely in English. Both programs begin each year in September and end in late July. Calendar for Academic Year (2011 12) Fall Semester 5 September to 16 December Winter Session 2 to 20 January -

Spring Semester 30 January to 18 May Summer Session 21 May to 13 July Graduation 26 July students may complete either program in two years, with about Students may pursue the MS in Environmental Health or in Epidemiology and Biostatistics as their terminal degree and elect a career in either academia or industry, or they may use this program as preparation for further studies towards a doctoral degree. After earning the MS degree, about one third of our graduates go on to doctoral research programs or seek other advanced degrees at the best universities in the world such as Harvard, Cambridge, Stanford, and King s College London. Other graduates return to their countries to serve in government ministries and agencies, or as academics, consultants, or health specialists in industry. students). The small class size facilitates individualized teaching and mentoring, and the programs are highly selective. Students come from Cyprus and other parts of the world for example, Lebanon, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Ethiopia, France, Turkey, the United States, and Bangladesh. The student body represents many professions and academic backgrounds, including medicine, chemistry, engineering, public health, and economics. careers in environmental health. Environmental health specialists must understand sources of pollution; the physical and chemical processes that govern their fate and transport; the biological processes dictating their intake, uptake, metabolism, elimination, and toxicity; and approaches for sampling, analysis, measurement, and modeling of ambient concentrations, human exposures, and biologically relevant doses. Environmental scientists must also be familiar with the principles of biostatistics, epidemiology, toxicology, and risk assessment in order to quantify risks and to characterize the state of knowledge and uncertainty underlying these estimates. Finally, they must understand the central concepts of economics, decision analysis, and administrative law in order to value health impacts, to assess the consequences of various strategies for reducing human exposures, The program relies upon an integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum taught by distinguished faculty from Harvard University, Cyprus University of Technology, and other leading schools of public health/ environmental science. All courses are required; there are no electives. The program involves 47.5 credits (76 ECTS) of coursework in the biological sciences; in exposure assessment and environmental science; in the quantitative sciences; and in policy, law, and regulation. The MS experience culminates in a 12.5-credit (20 ECTS) practicum in which each student integrates and applies knowledge from these courses to analyze a problem in environmental decision making or regulation. The practicum not only provides experience in quantitative program a one-year Master of Science in Health Economics and Policy. THE CII MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAMS MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH community, home, and workplace and uses this knowledge to improve public health. The MS program is designed to equip graduates of the program with the skills and knowledge necessary for professional and research The curriculum of the MS in Environmental Health is presented below, organized by discipline: Quantitative Sciences EHS 511 INTRODUCTION TO BIOSTATISTICS (5.0 credits/ 8 ECTS) EHS 515 INTRODUCTION TO EPIDEMIOLOGY EHS 519 RISK ASSESSMENT EHS 524 ENVIRONMENTAL EPIDEMIOLOGY

Successful applicants have come from a variety of fields, including medicine/biology, engineering/physical sciences, public health/environmental science, and many other relevant fields. MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EPIDEMIOLOGY AND BIOSTATISTICS The disciplines of epidemiology and biostatistics involve collecting, classifying, summarizing, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting numerical information relevant to biological, medical, and public health problems. Epidemiologists/biostatisticians play a central role in biomedical research; they are involved in all stages of a study from design, to data collection, data analysis, inference, and interpretation of the results, testing hypotheses, and developing statistical models as needed in the process. Biostatisticians and epidemiologists model relationships between individual and environmental factors and health outcomes; identify risk factors for diseases; design, monitor, analyze, interpret, and report results of biomedical studies; and develop statistical methodologies to address questions arising from medical and public health data. The program will offer a regional focus. All courses are required; there are no electives. To provide the training necessary to master the fundamental skills of epidemiology and biostatistics, the master s program encompasses 47.5 U.S. credits (76 ECTS) of coursework in the key competencies of these fields and both theoretical and applied epidemiological and statistical techniques. Courses include the principles of good practice in biomedical research; genetics, environment, and human disease; analytic study design in epidemiologic methods; basics of statistical inference; and epidemiology of chronic and infectious dean. The program will also require a year-long practicum (12.5 U.S. credits or 20 ECTS), in which the tools of epidemiology and biostatistics will be applied to a public health problem.
