GOD MADE THE ANIMALS (A.1.FALL.8) Biblical Reference Genesis 1:24-25 Key Verse Genesis 1:25 Key Concept God made a world full of interesting animals. Educational Objectives At the end of the class today, the children will be able to: 1. Name four different animals and imitate their sounds 2. Tell what the animals do and why they re important 3. Give thanks to God for the animals LIFE APPLICATION Each day of creation God made something important. Today we will see how God made the animals, domestic ones just like wild ones. From the smallest animals to the biggest animals, they were all made by God. Again, children need to understand their responsibility to take care of the animals, because they were made by God, the creator. Children will learn about God s creativity during this week as they see all the different types of animals. Possible Activities and Class Plan Activity Materials Time Opening Prayer Candle 1 minute Activity Animals, pencils, tape 10 minutes Song Puppets, music, guitar 10 minutes Bible Story Illustrations and Bible 10 minutes Bible Verse Illustration and Bible 10 minutes Craft Table and play doh/modeling 10 minutes clay Creation Calendar Sheets of paper, crayons, 10 minutes scissors, clothes hangers, yarn or string Closing Prayer Candle 1 minute

INSTRUCTIONS Opening Prayer Gather children around a candle and explain that we are entering into a special time with God. Encourage the children to hold their hands out in front of them palms up as a sign they are ready to receive what God has for them today. Light the candle Prayer: God we light this candle remembering: you made light, you made us, and you are with us now. Amen (For safety sake, you may wish to extinguish the candle after the prayer) Activity: Prior to the class, color the different animals that you find in this lesson and if possible laminate them or cover them with contact paper. Then, cut up the animals, separating the legs from the body, the head, etc. The children can play with all of the cut out figures, making new animals and giving them names. Another possibility is to give the children a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw or invent a new animal. Or you can use the frog mask that is found in this lesson and the kids can color it and cut it out. They can then use it while you read the poem that is found in the lesson. Song: There are a plethora of songs that talk about animals. One of them is, If I were a butterfly If you or others in your church know how to make hand puppets, it would be great to have a few to use while you teach the song. The children can use the puppets and take turns using the different animals. Bible Story: Again, it would be good to use pictures, illustration, photos, pictures from magazines, or books to show the variety of animals that were created by God. Help the children to see the variety of sizes and colors and shapes. Later in this lesson you will find an example of how to tell the story. This is a time to help them see how grateful we can be because of what God created on the 6 th day. At the end of the story, add the number 6 to the creation calendar. Bible Verse: Today the children will learn a new verse. You can make copies of the different animals that are found in this lesson and the children can color them while together you repeat the verse various times. Activity: The children can make animals out of playdoh/modeling clay to add to the creation art project. Craft: Today the children will color the number 6 and put it on their mobile. If in addition, you want to do the other craft option, make sure to make a copy of the sheet for each child and provide strips of fabric or yarn so they can use it to decorate their animals. Closing Prayer Gather children around the candle again. Light the candle Prayer: Thank you God for making us, Thank you God for making the world. Amen

BIBLE STORY Each week we ve seen all of the new things that God created. Remember, before God began to create the world, there was nothing in it. It was dark and empty. Then god made the light and he called the light day and the dark night. On the second day God made a beautiful sky and then the earth separated the water in the oceans, rivers, lakes. And to make the world even more beautiful God created plants, flowers and trees. The fourth day God made the sun, the moon and the stars and hung them in the sky. On the fifth day God filled the sky with birds and filled the oceans, rivers, lakes with fascinating fish. And even though all these things were good and God was happy with everything that had been made, still something was missing. God saw that the world was full of plants and trees and that it was the perfect place because they produced all sorts of different food and fruits. So, on the 6 th day God said, I m going to make something different. I m going to make the animals.lots and lots of animals of all different kinds to fill my world. And that s what God did. God made all the animals the ants, the snails, the kangaroos. God made animals with funny tails and the camel with its two bumps. God made the hippopotamus with its big feet. God made animals that eat plants and others that eat fish, and others eat birds and others that eat insects. God saw that it was good and God was happy. Everything was beautiful, but God was still not completely happy.

CRAFT Creation calendar

CRAFT 2 Six green frogs 1. Use the pattern of the frog to make a mask for each of the children, or trace the mask onto green paper and tape or glue a popsicle stick to it. 2. In groups of six let the children decide how to act out the poem that s included below. Six green frogs, Sitting on a log, The grandma frog said La, la, la, la, lon. The first little frog said, let s go swim. The second frog answered, I d rather rest. All of a sudden a little child appeared with a little doggie. And all three frogs jumped, jumped, jumped away.

CRAFT 3 The animals God made God made everything. Animals, birds, insects, plants, air, the sun and every living thing on earth. God also made you. Can you name the animals you see here? Which ones live in homes with people?

PUPPETS Genesis 1:25 Materials: cardboard, patterns, crayons or markers, glue, scissors, craft sticks, cotton balls. Instructions: 1. Trace the hand of a child on a piece of cardboard or heavy paper. 2. Make sure to enlarge the figures of the animals on the following pages, so they are about the size of a child s hand. 3. Give each child the figure of an animal and the cut out pattern of his or her hand so that they can glue the animal parts to it and make the body. 4. Also give them a copy of the animals tails so they can glue them on as well. 5. Then they can attach the craft stick/popsicle stick to complete their puppet.

PATTERNS FOR THE PUPPETS

SHADOW PUPPETS Put your hands together as shown below in the illustration. If you put the light behind your hands the children can see the animal shadows on the blank wall.
