Technical Brochure: Dimensions & Secion Proies HSS Manufacuring Mehods The ransformaion of seel srip ino hollow srucural secions (HSS) is he resul of a series of oaions including forming, welding and sizing. urrenly hree mehods are being used in Norh America for he manufacure of HSS. These mehods are described below. Each mehod mees ASTM A-500 and SA G-0.1-9 requiremens for he he manufacure of HSS, and he sizes lised in his brochure may be produced o eiher sandard. Elecric Resisance Welding (ERW) Process In he ube mill, fla seel srip (1) is formed coninuously around is longiudinal ais o produce a round ube. This is done by moving he srip hrough a progressive se of rolls (-6). The srip edges (7) are heaed by eiher high frequency inducion or conac welding and hen forged ogeher by weld rolls o creae a coninuous longiudinal weld wihou he addiion of filler meal. The weld seam (8) is hen cooled and processed hrough a se of sizing shaping rolls which cold-form i ino a round (9), square (10) or recangular (11) secion. HSS wih a maimum iphery of 6 inches are manufacured by he elecric-resisance welding (ERW) process. HSS wih ipheries greaer han 6 inches are manufacured by he submerged arc welding (SAW) process. The dimensions, including nominal widh, nominal deph, nominal diameer and nominal wall hickness are subjec o he missible variaions sipulaed in ASTM A500 Sandard Specificaion for old-formed Welded and Seamless arbon Seel Srucural Tubing in Rounds and Shapes. Wih oday s manufacuring mehods, HSS are produced wih more precision han in he pas. The srip used o produce HSS is now ordered o hicknesses wih igher olerances. As a resul, ERW HSS manufacured o A500 will ofen have a wall hickness close o he Specificaion allowable value. In a change from pas pracice, secion proy daa is now based upon he design wall hickness. The design wall hickness,, for ERW HSS is less han he specified nominal wall hickness. For SAW HSS, he design wall hickness,, is equal o he specified nominal wall hickness.the design wall hickness for each HSS size is included in he abulaed daa. The secion proy daa based upon he design wall hickness,, resuls in variaions in he published area daa ha do no eceed.50% of he daa based upon he minimum missible wall hickness sipulaed in ASTM A500. This is consisen wih he similar secion proy daa published for ho rolled srucural shapes and he manufacuring olerances associaed wih hose producs. The secion proy daa for recangular and square ERW HSS are based upon ouside corner radii equal o.0 imes he design wall hickness. The secion proy daa for recangular and square SAW HSS are based upon ouside corner radii equal o.6 imes he design wall hickness for SAW secions wih inch nominal wall hicknesses; and.0 imes he design wall hickness for SAW secions wih nominal wall hicknesses equal o inch and inch. General availabiliy informaion for each size of HSS manufacured o ASTM A500 Grade B is conained in The Seel Tube Insiue s companion publicaion Principal Producers and apabiliies. Tables, summarizing he capabiliies of principal producers by specific size and wall hickness, are included for recangular, square and round HSS. NOTE: The more universal erms Hollow Srucural Secion and HSS are used in his publicaion o designae recangular, square and round srucural seel ubing. These erms replace srucural ubing and pipe, which had been used previously. The round Hollow Srucural Secions include ypical pipe size diameers and wall hicknesses, as well as ypical HSS sizes.
