Angry Birds Main Idea Game Directions: Print, cut out, and laminate all cards. Lauren LaCour MA CCC-SLP To Play: Mix all the cards together in a pile. Each student draws a card on his turn. If he draws a bird card, he comes up with the main idea of the passage. If he is correct, he keeps the card. If he gets it wrong, another student gets to try for the card. If a pig card is drawn, the student either loses a turn or gets an extra turn. The student with the most cards when they all run out is the winner. *Note: All non-fiction cards were adapted from Wikipedia.

The red angry bird was very shy. He did not like to talk to any of the other birds. He liked to stay in his bird house all the time. He only came out when it was time to fight the pigs. The yellow bird loves to eat worms. He wakes up very early to find the best ones. He digs in the dirt with his beak until he catches a juicy worm. Then, he gobbles it up and tries to find more. The blue bird is a very small bird. Because he has small wings, he cannot fly as fast as the other birds. His body is so small that sometimes other birds don t notice him. Good thing he has other blue bird friends to keep him company. The black angry bird was hot. He had been working hard in the sun all day long. Sweat was dripping from his feathers, his feet, and his beak. Finally, he found a nice big birdbath to help him cool off. The white bird gathered some sticks. She brought them high into a nearby tree. She arranged them until they all fit together nicely. She stood back to admire her work. Her nest was complete! The green angry bird was upset. He could not find his eggs. He looked for them in the tree. He looked for them in the nest. He even looked for them in the hollow log. He searched and searched but never found them.

Cardinals are red birds that live in North and South America. They have strong bills and eat seeds. The male and female cardinals have different appearances. The yellow canaries typically feed in flocks. They search for food on the ground. They usually feed on the seeds of grass, weeds, and figs. Sometimes canaries eat other plants or small insects as well. Bluebirds are very helpful to gardeners. They eat a lot of insects and help to get rid of insect pests. This keeps the bugs out of their gardens. Gardeners do everything they can to keep bluebirds around. Male blackbirds like to sing. Some begin singing in late January, but most sing between March and June. Their song is musical and sounds like a low-pitched flute. They like to call from high places like trees or rooftops. Bird eggs have many characteristics. Most eggs are white, but some can be colorful. The eggs can have different kinds of shells too, such as rough, shiny, or oily. Most bird eggs have an oval shape. Toucans live in Southern Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean regions. Most of them prefer to keep to tropical places. Toucans make their nests in tree hollows and holes.

One day, the red bird found a slingshot. He climbed inside it and began to swing. Suddenly, the slingshot launched him forward into a large fort. He knocked the whole thing down with a loud crash! One evening, the yellow bird went to play in the apple tree. He was having so much fun dancing and singing, that he called the bluebird over to join him. They hopped from branch to branch and laughed and sang. It was so much fun! The bluebird laid in his nest and moaned. His body ached all over, and he was running a fever. His mom came and brought him some medicine to make him feel better. It is no fun being sick! The black bird got out two pieces of bread, some peanut butter, and some worms. First, he spread the peanut butter on the bread. Next, he put worms on top the peanut butter. Last, he put the two pieces of bread together. Yum, an earthworm and peanut butter sandwich! The white bird was shaking in fear. She saw five green pigs standing in the nearby field. She was so afraid that she hid behind a rock. She did not come out until all the pigs left. She was shaken up for the rest of the day. Last night, the green bird stayed awake all night. He tossed and turned in his nest. He kept thinking about new ways to knock down the pigs fort. He thought about flying into the wood and ice. Even though he tried to go to sleep, he could not.

You missed the pig! Haha! You missed! Too bad! You missed! You hit a pig! Take an extra turn! You beat the pig! Take an extra turn! You knocked it out! Take an extra turn!
