VORTEX Waterborne Basecoat Intermix Color Series VX PRODUCT DATA SHEET PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Waterborne Basecoat is an easy-to-apply, fast-drying basecoat that provides excellent color matches to today s OEM Basecoat/Clearcoat finishes. Waterborne Basecoat Color is especially suited for high volume collision centers specializing in high quality car refinish repair. SUITABLE SUBSTRATES OEM Finishes Aged Finishes SUITABLE PRIMERS TP520-TP526 Primers and Sealers TP527-TP529 Primers and Sealers 5006 1K Primer Surfacer SURFACE PREPARATION 1. When sealing, final sand repair area with P400-P600 grit sandpaper. If directly top coating over primer surfacer, final sand with P600 sandpaper. Dry sanding is recommended. 2. Solvent clean with appropriate Martin Senour surface cleaner. Wipe dry with a clean cloth. Preparation for Blending Panels (Prior to Basecoat Application): 1. Solvent clean with appropriate Martin Senour surface cleaner, then wipe dry with a clean cloth. 2. Blend panels should be sanded with P800-P1000 grit sand paper on a random orbital sander. 3. Repeat step one, then thoroughly tack the surface to be painted with a clean tack cloth. 2013 The Martin Senour Company Page 1 of 5 MA5281

DRYING SCHEDULE Air dry times @ 75 F and 25% R.H. Note: Higher humidity will extend dry times. Drying Schedule Air Dry @ 75 F Venturi @ 95 F Dust Free 5-10 Minutes 2-3 Minutes Tape Time 20-30 Minutes 10 Minutes Time to Clearcoat 20-30 Minutes 10-15 Minutes Note: Venturis that have the option of increasing air temperature will decrease your dry time significantly. NOTES With waterborne technology, it is beneficial to have some degree of climate control when dealing with temperatures and humidity levels. High humidity will increase the time it takes to dry waterborne basecoats. Increasing air movement during the drying (dehydration) stage can shorten the drying time, but as the relative humidity gets closer to the dewpoint, the ability for air movement to evaporate water from the paint decreases, therefore unheated/unconditioned air becomes ineffective. The addition of heat in the drying process will help dry waterborne paints in high humidity climates. VR020 Standard Repair Basecoat Reducer VR030 Large Repair Basecoat Reducer (Multi-panel & Overall Repairs) VR020 VR030 NOTE: For best application results, invert the reducer container from top-to-bottom several times (hand agitation) PRIOR to mixing into basecoat color. After hand agitation of the reducer, it should be incorporated into Basecoat with a stir stick. Do NOT shake reduced Basecoat. RECOAT Allow 15-30 minutes flash or until fully dehydrated. Optional force dry: After dehydration, basecoat can be force dried/ IR at 120-140 degrees Fahrenheit for 5-10 minutes to improve productivity or improve dehydration in higher humidities. Allow basecoat to reach ambient temperature before clearcoat application. For low VOC areas, apply one of the following Martin Senour VOC compliant clearcoats over Basecoat Color: TC721, TC722, TC723, TC725, TC727, TC728, TC729 and IPC21. For national rule areas, TC729, TC748, TC751, TC755, and IPC15 can also be used over the top of Basecoat Color. See clearcoat product data sheet for specific instructions. Recoat window for Basecoat Color is 7 days. 2013 The Martin Senour Company Page 3 of 5 MA5281
NOTES For best application results, invert the reducer container from top-to-bottom several times (hand agitation) PRIOR to mixing into basecoat color. Flash times between coats of base, and base to clearcoat are dependent on temperature, humidity, and airflow. The use of Venturi and heated air diffuser equipment will decrease flash times. Do not use increased airflow (ie. Venturi) after finesse coat application. Recommended strainer: 125-226 micron (finer strainers will negatively impact fluid flow and color) Do not add fisheye eliminator to Basecoat Color. Basecoat Color may be dry sanded after dehydration with P600 or finer to remove imperfections. Apply more basecoat to sanded areas prior to clear coating. It is important to practice good inventory management of any waterborne product, as the shelf life is shorter than that of solvent-borne paints. Shelf life for chromatic and pearl toners is 36 months. Shelf life for Aluminums, V310, V351, and V401 is 18 months. products must be stored at temperatures between 40 F and 90 F.
