HOW TO GUIDE for Outdoor living DESIGN YOUR PROJECTS CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS INSTALL WITH PROFESSIONAL RESULTS

landscape design made easy design your project PLAN AHEAD FOR BEST RESULTS... The most important thing to realize about designing your yard is it is a part of your home and should reflect your personality. The key is to plan ahead so you ll be happy with the results. Want a fountain? A fire pit? A flower bed? If space allows, you can have them all and you can install them yourself. Here are a few simple guidelines to get you started so all your weekend projects will fit together in the big picture. And, the big picture is a good place to start: Sketch the boundaries of your yard. (Use the convenient grid on the next page.) MARK MAJOR FEATURES LIKE THE HOUSE, TREES, DRIVEWAY, ETC. NOTE WHERE THE WINDOWS LOOK OUT THE WHAT AND THE WHERE Once you figure out what projects you want in your landscape, how do you know where to put them? START BY DRAWING VIEW LINES ON YOUR PLAN FROM WINDOWS AND DOORS BEAUTY ELEMENTS LIKE PATIOS, WALKWAYS, FOUNTAINS, BENCHES, FLOWER BEDS, AND RETAINING WALLS GO ALONG OR AROUND THESE LINES SO YOU CAN SEE THEM. UTILITY ELEMENTS LIKE GRILLS, TRASH CANS, ETC. GO OUTSIDE THE VIEW LINES. ADD INTEREST AND DEPTH BY CREATING DIFFERENT LEVELS WITH STEPS OR RETAINING WALLS. HIGHLIGHT ENTRY AND EXIT POINTS WITH PLANTING OR SPECIAL PAVING Don t be afraid to think big when planning, but if you make a plan for the whole landscape, break it into manageable projects you can tackle one at a time. NOTE WHERE PEOPLE WALK TO GET TO AND THROUGH OUTDOOR SPACES. MAKE A LIST OF THE ELEMENTS YOU WANT TO INCLUDE. / 2 / CALL 1 800 44 LOWES CLICK lowes.com/oldcastle VISIT your local Lowe s / 3 /

choosing the right product... how much do I need? AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP TO A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT. EDGERS are easy to install, inexpensive, and make good borders for gardens, walkways and patios. WALLS are better for creating different levels in a landscape. They require a little more effort to install properly but will last a long time. STEPPING STONES and PAVERS are used for flat surface projects like patios, walkways, driveways, etc. See the table below for general guidelines. GOOD BETTER BEST HERE ARE SOME SAMPLE PROJECTS WITH THE NUMBER OF BLOCKS NEEDED: STEPPING STONES & PAVERS PROJECT SIZE 10 X10 PATIO 10 X15 PATIO 10 X20 PATIO 4 X25 WALKWAY 16 Square 57 86 114 57 2x8x16 114 172 228 114 Limited, single colors. HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED? WE VE DEVELOPED GREAT TOOLS TO HELP YOU EASILY DETERMINE HOW MANY BLOCKS YOU NEED FOR ANY PROJECT: 1. THE ESTIMATOR WHEEL. Find it in the garden department at any Lowe s store and dial in your product, the size of your project and get the answer. 2. THE CONCRETE CALCULATOR. Find it at lowes.com/ oldcastle. More flexible than the Wheel, you can find product quantities down to a fraction of a block for your exact project size. LOWE S ASSOCIATES. Still confused? The Garden Department Lowe s Associates are specially trained by OldCastle to help with any problem from estimating to installation.
