Data Management

Flexible, adaptable, open and reliable

Paradigm is the first software vendor to offer a data management system truly aligned to the activity of oil and gas companies. The upstream energy business is based on complex data systems that combine information from a variety of data sources, to which exploration and production companies add processing, interpretation, analysis, modeling and simulation activities. In the 1990 s, the first priority of industry software developers was to assemble this mass of information into workable datasets for geoscientists, engineers and decision-makers. This was achieved through the use of large monolithic database systems. With the exponential growth in data, it is increasingly clear that monolithic architecture is ill-suited to today s energy companies. For data to be shared by a community of users, the monolithic architecture requires that all data in a business unit or company be stored in one huge database. If segregated into asset databases, the data cannot be shared without duplication. The Paradigm Epos Data Management and Interoperability system presents a new approach - an agile, distributed database which removes the constraints and data duplication requirements of legacy systems.

Scalable from a laptop to an enterprise network First deployed globally in 2004, the Paradigm Epos infrastructure underlies the entire Epos-based application suite, links the applications to a shared database, and provides a common working environment for individuals or teams across disciplines. The latest Epos version, Epos 4, is a mature, flexible, feature-rich database which can be easily adapted to changing performance requirements and storage locations as datasets change and grow. Paradigm s unique knowhow regarding modern computer architecture makes Epos the only oil and gas data framework to operate concurrently on massively parallel compute clusters, large networked client-server configurations, and off-line portable systems. Running on both Linux and Windows operating systems, the system s versatility and powerful features support the needs of customers of all sizes, from individual laptop users, to small groups, to very large, geographically distributed enterprises. With Epos, users can select a subset of the data for work on their laptops. When the work is completed, they simply reload and synchronize the data in the on-site repository. Paradigm Epos empowers geoscientists and engineers from multiple disciplines to share data, collaborate on problem solving, and interact in a common visualization environment, for more effective decision making. Epos is based on client/server architecture, which provides a multiuser environment for data sharing and collaborative work. The use of dedicated repositories for each data type (seismic, wells, culture data, etc.) ensures that each is stored and accessed in the most appropriate way. This also makes it possible to balance the load of both network storage appliances and network bandwidth to ensure maximum return on investment. Yet the system remains transparent to users, who simply connect their project to any number of repositories, with no need for data duplication. distributed Repositories Dedicated data repositories for different data types, ensuring optimal performance Use of SQL relational data management for reliability, high performance, ease of use and configurability An Epos Project can include multiple repositories of the same type, merging data from different sources without data replication GEODETIC SYSTEMS AND UNITS On-the-fly conversion of original data to Project data coordinates Projects can mix data stored in different units and projection systems Full suite of customizable data loading, data verification and data harmonization tools to rapidly get data to work ACCESS AUTHORIZATION Customizable, role-defined access to specific operations and data Users can be granted or denied viewing, access or editing rights to data Different permission schemes per data type Powerful tools for easy site administration, even in companies with hundreds of users

Security and control A major issue for E&P companies is the protection of their data assets. A company may have data that is available to visiting partners, or belongs to one asset team but not to others, or is part of a strategic new venture. Epos offers a rich set of security and access control tools to manage both access to specific sets of data, and the levels of permission granted to groups of employees or other personnel on site. Disaster recovery, another strong concern, is addressed by advanced backup and restore capabilities, which allow operators to place highpriority projects in an alternate location, should a facility become unavailable. Epos 4 is the most advanced digital platform in the industry for dynamic, configurable, network-based data management, offering enterprisewide, secure data access, with optimal use of network bandwidth. BACKUP and archiving Backup every Project, survey and database separately Incremental or full backups (2011 release) Selective backup of seismic files Optional compression and encryption Restore high-granularity data items from file system snapshots INTEROPERABILITY High-performance links to data stored in Landmark OpenWorks and Schlumberger GeoFrame OpenSpirit links to many other E&P data repositories Paradigm OpenGeo development kit opens the Paradigm system to third-party development Data loading using standard data loaders such as ASCII, SEG-Y, RESCUE, and others WEB-BASED ADMINISTRATION From anywhere, access a GIS-based view of all the data using a standard browser Search, preview, filter and catalog logs and seismic, and move data to projects Use Google Earth to view terrain and culture around an asset or projected field activity Index any database, including third-party or customer-specific data stores

Configure the system your way The Epos infrastructure includes powerful management tools that allow system administrators to tailor data access and usage to the evolving needs of their organization. The system s interoperability capabilities enable data from other E&P software vendor companies to be linked or transferred into Epos for access by Paradigm applications. Customers leverage this to manage the transition process as they migrate hundreds of terabytes of data from their legacy system to Epos, while ensuring that projects remain active and operational at all times. The Web Asset Manager (WAM) provides an overall, Web-based view and global geographical search and index of all the data in Epos projects at a given site. The Paradigm OpenGeo Development Kit enables application programmers to build software that may access any data in Epos and may also interact with Epos applications. By designing an open system with programming tools and interoperability services, Epos can operate in a multi-vendor environment while offering customers and third parties the ability to add proprietary capabilities to the system in a straightforward manner. The gains in productivity, and the flexibility offered by a system that supports data sharing, deliver tangible bottom-line benefits to the organization. Backed by years of global experience, Paradigm is establishing the benchmark for best practices in data management.

Epos data management allows geoscientists and engineers to concentrate on their operational priorities and deadlines, by giving them easy access to data in a secure and controlled environment.

Paradigm Implementation Services Paradigm offers effective tools and comprehensive services to assist customers in transitioning from legacy vendors data storage to Paradigm Epos repositories. Numerous customers have successfully transferred years of work and hundreds of terabytes of data, allowing them to switch off the prior vendor s licenses within a reasonable time frame.
