How to backup and restore a database This document describes the basic process for backing up or restoring your ItemTracker database. If you encounter errors that are not covered by this document please contact support@itemtracker.com. To go straight to the database restore section click here. To back up a database Start SQL Server management Studio by clicking start --> All Programs --> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 --> SQL Server Management Studio. The following screens will appear: 1 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Click "Connect" button. You will see the following screen. Expand the tree by clicking on the + symbol if necessary.you will then see the screen below. 2 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Expand the Databases node and select the ItemTracker database by left-clicking on it. 3 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Right-click on the database, point to Tasks, and then click Back Up, like the image below. 4 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
The Back Up Database dialog box appears like below. 5 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
In the Database dropdown, verify the database name. You can optionally select a different database from the list. In the Backup type dropdown, select Full. Either accept the default backup set name suggested in the Name text box, or enter a different name for the backup set. Optionally, in the Description text box, you can enter a description of the backup set. To have the backup set expire after a specific number of days, click After (the default option), and enter the number of days after set creation that the set will expire. This value can be from 0 to 99999 days; a value of 0 days means that the backup set will never expire. 6 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
To select the path of the backup file, choose Add. To remove a backup destination, select it and click Remove. To view the contents of a backup destination, select it and click Contents. We recommend you to first remove the path and click Add to create a new backup destination. See below: You can choose the default path in the textbox under Destinations on disk or to choose a different path click on the button just on the right of the textbox. Whichever path you will be selecting will be shown on the read-only textbox "Selected path". 8 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Type the name of the file you want to store the back up into. Do not forget add a filename extension as.bak with the filename. See above figure. Click OK twice. You will see in the Destination section of the Back Up Database window, the full path and the back up file name is showing. See below. 9 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Click on the OK button. The following screen appears. Click OK on this screen. 10 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
You can check for the back up file now in the destination folder. It should be in the folder that you have specified. To restore a database To restore a database, navigate to the particular database in SQL Server Management studio and right-click on the database and select Tasks. You may also just right-click on the Database node but you will need to fill in the To Database box in the Destination for restore section later. In the Tasks pane select Restore and within restore, select Database... See figure below. The following screen will appear. 11 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
In the 'Source for Restore' section, choose the radio button "From Device". Click on the button along side the radio button "From Device" and the following screen opens. 12 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Click Add on the Specify Backup screen. In this screen navigate to the folder where the back up file has been stored. In our case it is ITR_BackUp.bak. See figure below. 13 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Click OK after selecting the back up file. The following screen appears. 14 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Just check whether the correct path is showing under "Backup Location". If you want to choose a different path you can remove the path by clicking "Remove" button and click Add button to specify another path. Click OK after making the changes. You will go to the "Restore Database" screen like the figure below. 15 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
On this screen you will see that the full path of the back up file to be restored is showing on the textbox beside "From device" radio button which you have checked earlier. Just check the checkbox under the heading "Restore" in the "Select the backup sets to restore" section as shown below. 16 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
Click OK button and your database will be restored. Once your database is restored, you will get a screen like below. Click OK button and you will be ready to work on the restored database. 17 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
If you encounter an error restoring your database you may need to select the options page and check on the option Overwrite the existing database. Then simply click OK again. 18 ItemTracker Software Ltd.
