HISTORY & POLITICAL SCIENCE The study of history and political science provides enhanced understanding of society, increases communication skills, and teaches critical thinking. These, and other benefits of a liberal arts education, bring confidence and increased enjoyment in every area of life by broadening the students intellectual experience.

DEGREES History and Political Science at Andrews University The History and Political Science Department serves Andrews students in several ways. It provides general educational courses required for all students and offers degree programs for those interested in further study of American and European history, political science, or social studies. In addition, the department offers a Masters Degree in Church-State Studies, a topic of special interest in light of recent events. Faculty in the department aid students in understanding the relationship of the past and present and demonstrate how local, national, and international political processes affect and respond to events. All teachers approach their subjects from an explicit, biblically based, Christian perspective. THE ABILITY TO GRASP A PROBLEM, RESEARCH AND DEVELOP ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS, AND MAKE A CLEAR, EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION WON ME MY FIRST JOB AND HAS SERVED ME WELL FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS. NICK CORCODILOS HOST, ASKTHEHEADHUNTER.COM; AUTHOR, ASK THE HEADHUNTER Degrees Offered The Programs > Bachelor of Arts in History > Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in Political Science > Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Political Science > Bachelor of Science in Social Studies > Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education: Major in Social Studies > Master of Arts in Church-State Studies Graduates from the History and Political Science Department have pursued careers in such areas as library science, journalism, teaching, diplomatic service, business, and medicine. The interdisciplinary program in political science provides excellent preparation for law school and also enables students to enter careers in economics, public administration, and non-governmental organizations. The social studies majors are primarily designed for those entering the elementary and secondary teaching professions.

PROGRAMS H PROGRAMS History The BA in History enables students to understand the past and its relationship to the present through a variety of American, European and non-western history courses, training in a foreign language, hands-on experience in historical research, and an introduction to historical philosophy and theory. The program teaches students to evaluate sources, whether written or oral, trace the workings of cause and effect through time, and synthesize information and present it clearly in written form. The foreign language requirement exposes students to another culture and opens up opportunities to study events from a different cultural perspective than their own. The degree provides a broad base from which to view and understand events both past and present. Students also have the opportunity to pursue personal interests though electives and some political science courses may be applied. Church-State Studies The MA in Church-State studies seeks to develop both scholars and advocates who focus on religious liberty issues. The MA program is designed for graduate students interested in the relationship of government and religion and examines such topics as freedom of religion, religious tolerance, and the place of religion in political life. Drawing on both history and political science courses, and providing for electives from other disciplines, the MA program enables graduates to understand churchstate relationships from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Recognition and understanding of these issues are increasingly important in today s world where religion is often an element in national and international conflicts. Studying past and present interactions between religion and the state provides knowledge for addressing their relationship in the future. Political Science The Interdisciplinary BA and BS degrees in Political Science are designed to teach analytical, administrative, and advocacy competence in the development of national and international public policies. The BA degree includes government, public policy making, international affairs and comparative politics combined with substantial course work in a second discipline of the student s choice. A foreign language is required. The BS degree includes the same courses and requirements as the BA, but has no foreign language requirement. The department s course work coordinates with other programs that the university offers. Students may choose the BA or BS depending on their interest in a foreign language. Minor in History Minor in Political Science Elementary Education: Minor in Social Studies The History Minor provides opportunity for the student to choose from available upper division history courses after meeting basic requirements in world, United States, and Seventh-day Adventist history. The Political Science Minor offers the student a variety of upper-division political science courses after completion of the basic American Government requirement. The Elementary Education Minor is open only to students working for elementary education certification. It includes United States and European history and courses from the fields of political science, economics and geography. Social Studies The BS in Social Studies is open to all students and fulfills requirements for those seeking secondary certification in the field. The BS in Social Studies: Elementary Education is open only to students pursuing certification in elementary education. Both Social Studies programs have United States and European history as their core, supplemented by courses in political science, economics, and geography.

CAREERS H MORE INFO Career Information The study of history and political science opens the way for careers in almost any field. For example, the National Park Service, the CIA/FBI, and the House of Representatives employ historians and political scientists at various levels. Careers are open as city managers, editors, government consultants and analysts. In business, banking and investment companies need financial and risk analysts. Communication media such as television and film companies require research, script writing, and consultation. Mineral extraction industries depend on analyses of political and legal situations, land-use histories, and mineral claims research. Non-profit organizations such as historical societies and associations, both public and private, produce publications that require research and organize activities based on knowledge of the past. Museums employ personnel in the areas of administration, preservation, research, interpretation and display. Philanthropic organizations require policy analysis and program and proposal reviews. The field in which one chooses to work is the primary determinant of income potential. Job outlook for liberal arts graduates is improving as more and more CEO s are discovering the value of a broad education. One group of 30 Hi-Tech CEO s recently stated: A liberal arts and science education nurtures skills and talents increasingly valued by modern corporations. Our companies function in a state of constant flux. To prosper we need creative thinkers at all levels of the enterprise who are comfortable dealing with decisions in the bigger context. They must be able to communicate to reason, create, write and speak for shared purposes... They provide leadership. (trentu.ca/news/ceo.html) Curriculum Guide Advising Student Organizations Students who are interested in entering a program offered by the History and Political Science Department may contact the department for a complete curriculum guide. High school students interested in one of these programs should take history and government classes offered at their high school as preparation for entering a program in this department. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who is the first resource to consult about questions or problems. The same advisor will work with an individual student from entry into college through graduation. The advisor helps plan the student s academic schedule, although ultimately the student is responsible for understanding and fulfilling all the requirements for degrees listed in the Andrews University Bulletin. In addition, the advisor aids with petitions, class and test conflicts, resolution of other academic problems, and, when needed, directs the student to other campus resources. Students may also obtain graduate school and career information from the advisor. The department sponsors two student organizations. Phi Alpha Theta is the international honors society for history. The local chapter organizes both social and academic events. For information contact April Summitt. The Pre-Law Society plans activities to help students prepare for law school and better understand the legal profession. Contact Brent Geraty for further details.
